Brian O'Driscoll's moment of genius against Ulster

Brian O'Driscoll's moment of genius against Ulster

This was from last season in the Magners League. Pure class shown by O'Driscoll.

Whether it was planned or not, its a good thing the winger didn't get in the way. Worked like a charm though. Brilliant.

It's also a pity it didn't produce a try.

no crossing cos o'driscoll didnt have the ball when he ran behind the winger.....i saw this video......tried it in a game.....and it didnt work....my centre reached up to catch the ball and got poleaxed!....

It is crossing. Once O'driscoll receives the ball and until the ball touches the ground, or another player, drisco is deemed to be the player in posession. Looked good though.

surely its not crossing, because then you can argue that if you pass the ball behind one of your players to another team mate then that is crossing??!?......therefore you can argue o'driscoll was passing to the winger and the winger didnt catch it so o'driscoll then recovered his pass......maybe!

it wasn't crossing cos he never had possesion when he was behind the player...if he was crossing the ref would have blown up....i think o'driscol is class but the commentator is a peen ass saying "thats why he is regarded as the best center in the world"....???? no it isnt...waw one trick...what about all the tries he has scored and runs he has made??Carlos Spencers trick when he recieved a bad ball and ckicked it backwards over his head...the ran and caught it and ofloaded it to cohen that should have scored.....doesnt make spencer the best player in the world!!Anyways keep the great videos coming

ITS NOT CROSSING BUT IT IS A FORWARD PASS. WATCH WHERE HIS FEET ARE WHEN HE THROWS THE BALL AND LOOK WHERE THEY ARE WHEN HE CATCHES IT. AT FIRST THEY WERE BEHIND THE LINE, AFTERWARDS THEY ARE IN FRONT OF IT, FORWARD PASS.

Anonymous April 18, 2007 4:36 pm

it isnt a forward pass you plank. he passed it to himself, and no one touched the ball inbetween him throwing it and catching it!!!oh yeh and it wasnt crossing either!

You Above, you are the plank, he passed it FORWARD to himself, read the rules about forward passes, IRB rule 12.1 (e)"A player must not intentionally knock the ball forward with hand or arm, nor throw forward." He "threw it forward", You MUPPET.

Yeah that bloke's right, it was a forward pass, basically what you (the plank) are saying is that you can throw the ball up into the air, over the opposition, catch it again and that it's alright. It clearly isn't!

Awesome, it is foreward tho he throws the ball up a good meter inside his half and catches it on the halfway, the ref didnt call it tho and thats all that reli matters. As for the best centre in the world i agree anyone with half a rugby brain and his stats can see that. And the "winger as some have put doesnt reli do Denis Hickie legendary irish winger justice.

Also have seen this done at ametuer level and called for forward pass, nock on and delibrate knock on because of different interpretations of IRB rule 12.1 (e)

IT ISNT A FORWARD PASS.......if you drop the ball forward and it hits the ground it is a knock on right!!!! if you drop the ball forward and catch it before it hits the ground it is fine and nothing happens!!! so technically you could say that a player passed the ball forward to himself by catching a dropped ball!!! so if that is fine then B O'Ds little trick is fine!!!!

Anonymous May 26, 2007 4:31 am

You can juggle the ball forward so long as it is within the reach of your arms (which it wasn't), and it's only crossing if you run behind a team mate with the ball. He didn't have the ball, so it's a forward pass, albeit to himself.

Until the ball touches the ground or another player surely you must be deemed to have possesion of the ball? Whats next? A winger lobs the ball forward (or sideways) over his opponent, expects not to get tackled, hoping to regather the ball and then scoot away to score. You won't need to chip and chase. Hell why not start juggling the ball when you're about to get tackled and see where that gets you.No one else touched the ball, O'driscoll was therefore still in posession, and IN POSESSION HE CROSSED BEHIND HIS OWN PLAYER

Who is the best centre in the world?mortlock and o'driscoll have to be the most influential, even when they play badly they're still worth about 10 points to their teams. With that said,i reckon d'arcy has been ireland better centre for the last year and half, although not as important to the team. and just as a tangent-is neil francis the biggest twat ever to string 2 words together, anyone notice how he put himself on the greatest pro and amature irish team of all time last week?

3 points...1. It was intentional, they'd been doing it all week in training.2. It wasnt crossing, its the same as running a decoy line as he didnt have the ball in his hand.and 3... hes defo the best centre in the world..

Oh come on guys, it wasnt all that great!!! The pass was average, how hard is it to pass to yourself?? The only reason he got past was the timing of the pass, and the delayed reactions of the defense!! you can't be the "best" centre in the world because you have the best "self-pass"

Oh yea! so sick! as a flyhalf, i think that is soo intense. Two players execute 5 defenders. The first three in the defesive line where they made the switch, and then when he got it again two players tackled him. Good, but not the best, but incredible. I never knew you cud do that. I thought you cant pass to yourself, i guess that rule is only for touch rugby haha

It's pretty amusing reading some of the comments here (especially those left by "anonymous")..."It's crossing!""It's not crossing!""Yes it is, you retard!""Nuh-uh!!"And yet I think only 1 person made an attempt to cite any law. This is from law 26 of the Laws of the Game:(1) It is illegal for any player:-(b) who is in an off-side position willfully to run or stand in front of another player of his team who is carrying the ball, thereby preventing an opponent from reaching the latter player,Now, there were arguments over if he was still in possession or not due to the fact that the ball never touched ground or another player. Notice that the law doesn't say "in possession" it says "carrying the ball".I think that this should settle the case of if it should have been called for obstruction/crossing.

Anonymous June 07, 2008 12:57 am

Technically it was a pass. The opposition 'took out' the 'receiver', and put the ball into play - therefore O'Driscoll becomes the support player. These are the technical aspects of the law, but obviously not not Brian's intention. What he's done (and believe me, only a very few individuals are able to do), is find a 'loop-hole' in the laws, to enable him to do what he did.

Forwards, backwards, crossing, not crossing... who cares. If the ref doesn't call it it doesn't happen. That's the beauty of rugby and sport, pushing the limits of the rules. And whoever thinks that anyone would feel like a fool calling Drico one of the best centers in the world is obviously strongly biased to some rival squad or too dense to know a good player when he sees one. And please people, stop writing kewl and dis and dat and hu, etc. You can't expect to have a convincing argument when I'm not convinced you can string 3 words together.

do you guys play rugby? or are you arm chair refs??

It isn't a knock on. The ball has not touched the ground. It isnt a forward pass because, although he has technically 'passed' it to himself, passing is the act of throwing the ball to another player. It is basically the same as when someone juggles with the ball while running forward. the ball is going forward but it never touches the ground or passed to another player. Therefore play on.

And to the guy who says he found a loop hole in the laws - WHAT??? look at his reaction afterwards, it was clearly not planned and he didnt sit reading the RFU handbook before the game and thought 'oh, i'll try this to see if it happens.' The winger has clearly over run an inline run and O'driscoll has just been quick minded to realise the error and adjust.
