Mark Stewart tackle on Ollie Smith - Lions 2005

Mark Stewart tackle on Ollie Smith - Lions 2005

This is a huge tackle from Mark Stewart of Taranaki on Ollie Smith, Lions centre. It was a rough tour for the Lions, losing all three Tests and struggling against the physicality of the other New Zealand teams even when they were on top.

This massive hit knocked the wind out of both players, although I'd say Smith came off second best.

I wonder if it makes any sense for the B&I Lions to play against all those provincial teams, as they get a lot of injuries. Those provincial players are playing a part in a bigger picture, and the same happened in all the other Lions Tours.

I thought he took it quite well considering he caught the ball above his head and it was a hospital pass.

Great hit from the Kiwi, but i think it's Stephen Jones who helps set the trap for Ollie Smith.

It was a really enjoyable tour, except for the tests!Anyone have that Simon Shaw clip of him catching a restart and running through the entire team and coming 5m short of a try?

The tours are fantastic. It's a pity there's not more of them anymore. The Lions tour attracted huge crowds and, with the exception of the coach, the entire team enjoyed a great time despite getting thrashed in the tests.

How come, with the biggest squad in years, they still played a lot of test players midweek? On the 97 tour to SA, even with a much smaller squad, it was very rare for a starting player for the test side to play midweek for risk of injury.
