Phil Bennett's classic try against Scotland in 1977

Phil Bennett's classic try against Scotland in 1977

This is one of those tries that you can watch over and over again. Sheer brilliance by the Welsh against the Scots at Murrayfield in 1977.

The Bill Mclaren commentary says it all, but some brilliant stepping to start it, and right at the end incredible hands, followed by one of the steps of the century that leaves the Scottish defenders lying on the floor helpless.

Phil Bennett scores under the posts to finish off what is commonly known and voted for as one of the best tries of all time.

No replays and not amazing quality, but nevertheless, enjoy this remarkable bit of classic stepping and passing from the team that dominated in the seventies.

Note: As with all videos featured on here, if anyone has a better quality version of this, please don't hesitate to let us know. Thanks.

From the angle it might seem that way, but you are obviously dumb. The ref would have called it.

"C" you are obviously the "dumb" one, just because it isnt called doesnt mean its not forward....check out all the videos on this site!! just cause the ref doesnt call a punch doesnt mean it is ok! ever noticed the ref is one man with 1 pair of eyes he cant see everything!

It's a great try regardless of whether you think it was forward or not, and it was pretty lateral anyway. I've seen worse passes ignored.I think you're missing the point.

I agree with Admin there - what is with so many commenters on this site completely ignoring class and sweet play to focus on imagined negatives? There is something wrong with you if you can't appreciate good rugby unless it comes from your own team.Oh, and to the anonymouses ou there - pick a name fer gods sake. Y'know, you were probably even born with one.

Nope, i saw the point of this whole video, and it is a classic try!! i was just commenting on someone elses comment rather than the video!

That wasn't aimed at you Craig since a) you have a name, and b) you were actually saying something something constructive. Both of which put you in the enlightened minority around here! Keep it up :)

To the little kid who posted "welsh were good in the 70's? HA! What happened!?" Yes the Welsh were good in the 70's, were also very good in the 50's and 60's, if you didn't know this then you probably don't know a lot about rugby so if you're going to try and take the p*ss then at least know a bit about the sport before making comments like that. At one time Wales were one of, if not the best team in the world. We're obviously far from that now, welsh rugby has been in a mess for a long time and it's still years and years from being sorted out. Hopefuly though one day we'll see Wales challenging the top nations again.

Wales have a long tradition of outstanding backs. I hope they come back with a great side, with avarage fowards, just to get the ball to their backs, and unleash all the danger of excelent players, such as Dwayne Peel, Tom Shanklin, Shane Williams and that other guy from the Ospreys... James Hook.

A truly marvelous try but they were let down by some truly naff dives over the line weren't they? Look at Shane Williams's dives these days, he's in orbit at one point, I'm sure....

immaculate hands for that last pass before the final step, he must have thrown that knowing his team mate was there without even looking!

"Gerald Davies, what's he doing there?"

2 crazy side steps, a vicious stiff arm and tremendous offload, that's what. Man I wish rugby was still played like this. Fun to watch, must have been fantastic to play.

PS; seen this a few times, on first glance the pass does look forward and perhaps was, but i think the ref gave the benefit of the doubt to the attacking team which I'll take anyday.

When are we going to get these games released on DVD so that fans of the sport can enjoy the games in there entirety. It is time the games from the early 1960's and 1970's were released, especially the one featuring John Taylor's famous kick. Come on get these released.
