Damian Smith try vs England - 1995 Rugby World Cup

Damian Smith try vs England - 1995 Rugby World Cup

This is one of my favourite and most memorable tries from the 1995 World Cup in South Africa. Young Wallaby wing Damian Smith gets up high to catch the perfectly placed Michael Lynagh bomb.

Mike Catt is literally knocked over in the process of attempting to mark it, and Smith rolls over for a fantastic try.

Brilliant athleticism and commitment, keeping his eyes on the ball at all times. A truly great World Cup try.

I remember this one...Trully great and a reminder that the fundamentals of rugby make all the diference at this level.Forget pace and tackling, keeping your eyes on the ball at all times gives you an edge over sloppy defenders like those english.

If that was done today there would have been players tactically postioned to block him

Mike Catt has never liked the physical stuff. I mean, all he had to do was jump for the ball, that's all Damian Smith did.Remember Lomu bulldozing him the next match!

1995 was not Mike Catt's favourite year by the looks of things.

Yes, Catt was perfectly fine. He lasted longer in the 2007 World Cup than the whole Australian team.

Was the ball actually grounded?

how can you forget tackling? surely along with passing that is the most important fundamental of rugby? sounds to me like a weak aussie picking up on one of the wallabies greatest strengths; keeping their eye on the ball. good comment mate.

Catt didn't jump because he wanted to call the mark, and in 199 to call mark you actually had to make one! unlike now where you can call it in the air....
