A Tribute to third place Los Pumas

A Tribute to third place Los Pumas

Argentina ended their World Cup last night in the same way that they started it - by beating hosts France in Paris.

The Third Place Playoff game is never an easy one for players to motivate themselves for. Both teams had just been knocked out in the Semis a week ago, and to get themselves up for this one is a big ask.

Last night though both teams came out firing. The game was as intense as any World Cup encounter should be, and we saw some running rugby from both teams, which at times has been scarce in this tournament.

Argentina were just too strong though once again, and made their World Cup tally for this year 2-0 against the French. The win in Paris helped them to claim the Bronze Medal and more importantly, the tremedous achievement of coming third in the World Cup.

Throughout the tournament Argentina have been a revelation. They started well and kept that up for all their matches, the only hiccup being the Semi Final game against the finalists South Africa.

Argentina have once again made their mark on world rugby. They've done all they can. It's now up to the IRB to work out some way for them to be included in a prestigious international tournament, which will no doubt grow the game and contribute to bringing through the next generation of Argentinian greats.

Remember this World Cup for the Argentinian spirit. Remember this group of players. They have made history for their country and perhaps, have changed the internationl rugby pecking order forever. Time will tell, but for now, congratulations Los Pumas. You're an inspiration to us all and should be very, very proud of what you've achieved.

Outstanding, one of the best montages I've ever seen, anywhere. And what a great story, the Puma's typify the spirit and passion brought to the World Cup by the lesser nations (the Pacific Islands, Portugal ect) but they also play great rugby. How can any fan of the game not like this team.I'm Australian and I play the game down here, but the big professional teams dont play with the same passion you find at grass roots level. These guys do. Someone could make a movie from their story. Thanks for a great video.

The French were awful last night... I hope the new team (without Ibaez,Pelous,Betsen,Dominici... and Laporte) will give us fresh air, because when I look at how we played our 2 last games, it's obvious we're going in the wrong way. The only french player I liked during this WC was Thierry Dusautoir, even if he's not as mediatised (is it correct english ?) as Chabal, I think he really deserves his place in this team. He was the only player that gave his jersey to the spectatorsat the end of the game, I wish I was the one who received it... lol

It's a good cup for Argentina but there's a lot of stuff to say about the way they play... they made too much intentional fouls, there's many insults from them and a lot of oofside all along the matchs they play. The rugby fans don't want this kind of rugby... I don't want to see the football spirit into rugby...What ever, congratulation for the Pumas. Let's play a Four-Nation.PS: sorry for my english.

Simply beautiful, that was a great montage. And for those of us who criticize our game let me just say that during yesterday's match, it was the French players who started the fights cause they were annoyed by the slow ruck play. It's a strategy for crying out out loud! Don't be such sore losers! England played you the same way.In any case, we still have a long way to go in terms of making it to the spotlight, since both the IRB and most of the international rugby press considers the Pumas to be mediocre and a bad influence on the rugby stage.Someone posted that they didn't want "the football spirit in rugby"; that's really wrong since in Argentina rugby is played contesting the foul play done by football. That was simply a cheapshot comment.

Ant October 20, 2007 3:03 pm

The pumas played classic schoolboy rugby at an international level. they didnt go in for things too complicated, they stuck to what they knew, they put their determination and hearts behind the belief in what they could do and they proved game after game that they deserve a place in the RWC and in doing this they earned themselves a place in history.Forget the intentional fouls and offsides (as mentioned above!) Every team does that at one point or another. you just need to look at the faces of these players after a game to see that they were shocked how at how far their spirit and determination took them. im in no way an argentinian supporter, but i have to take my hat off to all the (so called) minnows in this RWC especially Argentina!also amazing vid!

the same kind of dangerous tackles are made regularly by big teams; they are not treated the same as the Argentinian; didn't you see how Pichot was taken by his neck from his back?, without the ball? what the referee did then ??of course, this time was Chabal, holly and rude caveman adored by the locals !!!this is why Leguizamon saw the yellow card, referees have double standards; anyway, Pumas scored high, it's time to the French to cry, sorry.

It's funny to observe that during the tournament more and more teams have immitated some tactics of the PUMAS in order to win their toughest games (England vs. Australia, France and RSA in the final; France against All Blacks and England; The Bokks against Argentina and England, to mention some of them). Even though the argentinian way of playing has been criticized so hardly, some other trainers have also found the clue to secure some victories by using that strategy. Anyway, the PUMAS absolutely deserved their 3rd place in this tournament the same as the Springboks deserved to be champions, the only team that managed to beat the PUMAS by waiting for their errors and making use of their talent and superior experience in this kind of situations. So, congratulations to the Springboks for this cup and all my respect and admiration for these PUMAS, who played great rugby, full of passion, great discipline (rare attribute in south america), team-spirit and sacrifice!I hope this was no exception in life but the beginning of a new breed of southamerican rugbiers. I am looking forward to seeing them beat the All Blacks, the Boks or the Wallabies in the near future!Henry, Switzerland

7 nations make sense because most of the players play in European teams. Of course, Argentina would play in Spain, Belgium or some other european country. The argentineans living in Europe like me would be the supporters. Thanks a lot for the video, amazing. Thanks a lot Pumas, for all the great emotions you made me feel during the RWC. The first match was awesome, one of the most emotive match ever played by an argentine team of any sport (well, I would equalize it with ARG-USA in basketball in Athens 04).

Thank you so very much for this video, Mr. Admin. It brought me to the sweetest tears. Pumas' are pure pride right now and I'd really love to receive them at the airport. Please keep the way in which you carry the site, it's superb in every way (although a Search button would come handy).About Argentina playing a Four Nations or Seven Nations I guess it's only up to the IRB and other Unions, but the truth is that Argentina's league hasn't reached such a level in order to go to one or another just for the Hemisphere. And for the one above: if you just knew a little bit about airplanes you could see that travelling a few hours isn't such a problem when compared against the change of GMT between countries (which would me much worse in a hypothetical Four Nations). But then again, I guess the countries playing the Six Nations are afraid of including a team that might even win that tournament. ;)

Australia, New Zealand and South Africa ar as far from Argentina as Europe.Buenos Aires-Durban: 8150 kmBuenos Aires-Sidney: 11243 kmBuenos Aires-Auckland: 10329 km-Paris: 11055 km-London: 11132 km-Dublin: 10994 km-Rome: 11160 km-Glasgow: 11286 km-Cardiff: 10983 kmSo it's not that big a difference. And since most players on the Argentina side play in Europe, I think it'd be safe for them to play on a renewed Seven Nations (not to talk about the quality of teams such as Italy, which seems to be far from what Argentina is displaying). Some cities have decided to take the Pumas as their home for these matches, so it'd be great. The bad part is that there'd be an almost complete lack of players from Argentine teams. Not having "home" players would prove to be detrimental to the developing of younger players.

anonymous said "(well, I would equalize it with ARG-USA in basketball in Athens 04)"or then again,Cameroon beating Argentina in the 1990 Football WC :)but in all seriousness, this is one of those watershed events (the whole WC really, because noting only ARG's performance ignores that of all the Tier 2/3)It is very much like what happened after the 1990 WC -- it showed Africa "was here", and could not be ignored. Notice how many more African players got top-level pro contracts? The Weahs and Drogbas of soccer have the Millas to thank.

Los Pumas were the best team in the tournament. We could have been the cahmpions, but we played really bad against the Boks, who are well deserved champions. Actually Pumas vs. Boks should have been the final. both were the best teams all along the tournament. Im glad to see how the rugby world is giving a little respect for the Pumas. Lets hope that the UAR (Union Argentina de Rugby) can do something positive about this regarding our national rugby league, and it would be great to see a four nation including the Pumas, they pretty much deserve it.Excelent video, it clearly shows the passion, strenght, pride and love this tema puts in every much.Marcelo Loffreda should have been coach of the year.Wheres that tackle form Leguizamon to Chabal???thanks PUMAS!!!!!!!!!!

This world cup is not a surprise for the world rugby, it just put in the spotlight something that has been happening in the last 10 years: The Pumas beating constantly the northern hemisphere countries (just for you to know Argentina won 6 of the last 7 games to france - 5 of them played in france) in their house and the 6-nation teams doesnt having any chance of beating them at home. In the bottom line I suspect that the 6-nations (specially the French that have been very vocal about it) are insecure of exposing themselves to being defeated again and again at home. Do you really think that Italy deserves to be in the tournament more than argentina? They only have 20% of italian players. French, have some honor and accept that the players were the biggest cause of your looses. Players without heart and afraid of responsibility playing with your national jersey should be a matter of proud and motivation

Fantastic. Get them in the Seven Nations and watch the Tri-Nations beg for their inclusion in a couple of years.

Argentina was awesome. Their third-place match against France was probably the climax of the tournament.

The best video in whole argentinian rugby history. You will never see the passion and this fabulous rugby in other team. The All Blacks may be the best rugbiers ever known, but their chests are cold and they don't have the balls to play like this heroes did. Thanks Pumas for every second of pure rugby you gave us in the world cup...SOY ARGENTINO CARAJO Y CARTER ES UN POROTO AL LADO DE HERNANDEZ O CONTEPOMI!!!Public Enemy of the ABs

Let's get this straight. I am French. After the opening match I truly thought it was because of the pressure that France lost, and had a hard time accepting it. But after the bronze final and after seeing Argentina playing the way they did, I can say it out loud with no problem:We lost TWICE to Argentina, an AMATEUR team who showed SPIRIT, PASSION, GUTS, who played from the HEART, who showed BEAUTIFUL rugby.

weak team, were quite lucky with the reffing during all the tournament. spent their time kicking and chasing. funny game to watch against france for the third place, but the french obviously didn't want it. still one of the best minnows.bullsfan

Amazing to see what some of these players did:A Pichot and JM Hernandez.. 'nuf saidF. Contempomi: Stepped into a second fiddle role at #12M. Ledesma: Amazing to see that he can go to Clermont Auvergne and start AHEAD of Smith (the WC captain)Gonzalo Longo: Longtime servant for the Pumas, well at the end of his Test career. Made impacts in every game for which he stepped onto the pitch

from an Irishman, well beaten by Argentina in RWC2007, i want to congratulate them on being the first team outside the top,5 (ENG, FRA,NZ,AUS,SA) in the professional era to make the semis, and only the third overall. Argentina did what Ireland talked about doing. What a team, what a captain.

Great video. I reckon that the Pumas were one of the biggest suprises for a long time in the World Cup. They kicked ass all round! Much as it pains me to say, the English also played out of their skins, and definatly deserved 2nd place (i'm Northern Irish, but I don't like the English cos they're so cockey). No other team played with any passion apart from Fiji

There's a "movie" about them that tells their story, the preparations before going to france, what they were feeling during the competition etc. It's a kind of documentary made by ESPM.If you guys want to download it, it's easily found as torrent. The title of the "movie" is: Pumas de bronce, corazn de oro.IT'S A MUST SEEenjoy

i enjoy watching that video. every clip tells a story. its great too see a team who were always trying to break it into the quater finals finally get there and do it in style. one of the top teams in the world now at the moment. was a pity to see ireland to do so badly in the world cup but now look where it got us. grand slam, heineken cup with leinster, magners league with munster and paul o connell captain of the lions.
