WC07 Defining Moments - Leguizamon smashes Chabal
I've chosen this as a defining moment not because it changed the outcome of the tournament as such. What it did show however is the Argentinian attitude towards the French, and perhaps all opponents they came up against.
By not giving an inch and fronting up to the big men, Argentina showed that there is perhaps no place for intimidation in rugby anymore. This attitude combined with some exceptionally talented players got them to their prestigious third place in the tournament.
The tackle itself is questionable, and Leguizamon did get carded for it. It's up for debate though as some people will say he used his arms and others will say it was a definate shoulder. Sebastien Chabal also looked to perform somewhat of a spectacularly exagerated dive after contact.
There's no doubt it was a massive hit either way, and for sticking the iconic hard man of French rugby on his backside, this will be a 2007 World Cup moment thats lasts in the memory for years to come.

In all fairness it didnt look all that late. and it wasnt high in terms of a high tackle. but there was no arms, so yeh illegal. i wasnt on the recieving end of that tackle so whether or not chabal actually milked that i dont know, it did look a bit over the top....unless it was a massive hit!? another great video!

mate that looked like a cheap solid hit. but if you play rugby you expect to get a cheap shot throwen at you every now and again, if that happens to you all you do is play the game fairly and target the cheap player.but in all fairness it really wasn't that late of a hit and if chabal was running off the back of a line out correctly you always keep an eye on the players to the front of you plus the players on your team who you can off load to. even being the great player Chabal is he didn't do this basic principle and he got put on his ass for his mistake.Bloody hell rugbys a good game.

about what the_one_and_only_pat02127 said, you know that people are going to hit late, its something that might happen whenever you draw the opposition before the pass, but if he is drawn in you give the pass, theres no way to prepare for an illegal tackle thats a split second late, chabal did nothing wrong other than diving.

Chabal is a shit disturber, live by the sword, die by the sword. How he wasnt suspended for the deliberate head butt the left the allblack with a broken jaw amazes me. If you cant take it dont dish it out, an eye for an eye. The lines men have way to much say these days they miss all the important scoring fowls but stick their nose in on shit thats not important. The French had no place in the final glade they were removed.

Well, Chabal got smashed on that occasion, and Habana got burned on another one. Even when you're strong in a particular point of the game you can lose a contest from time to time. Nothing to complain about or be so surprised of. I agree with some that Chabal is a bit overrated but who doesn't like to have colourful characters on the field ? As for the so-called diving accusation, I assume it comes from someone who stays safely on his couch instead of facing the opponent in the eye.

This happened also in the first match against frace, each tme chabal took the ball, he receved a lot of hits. I don't like chabal, he has no class, no technique, he arrives alway late to every ruck and alway lose the ball, he's only good with marketing and winning money with sponsors and spots, but no on the pitch

Sorry if my english is not good enough to make it clear, but who are those NZ addicts telling shit about our neanderthal player, Chabalou 1er? Be fair, be honest, just look at what the man did last year with his team, Sale. Of course he didn't proove much in the RWC, but blame Bernie, our so called trainer who made tin with gold. Actually dumb shit i hate football, and BRFC is actually a rugby club, if you have a clue you would realise RFC is Rugby Football Club....and the B well none of you buisness really. and so what? serves Ali Williams for going high. heads clash very often in rugby matches, if ali williams had tackled lower he probably wouldnt have broken his jaw. and dont worry stay calm the Southern Hemisphere Lions choked once again, would have thought you guys would be used to that by now!? there is always the RWC in NZ in for years, you will probably win that, so chin up!

I thin Chabal should be ashamed of himself - yes it was a little late, yes there were no arms and it was an illegal hit - but come on did we need the swan dive and rolling around.... - I don;t watch football for that reason - slightest touch and players go down and roll about - we don;t need it in rugby - professioanl players who get hit and are injured lie still - why? - so they don;t do themselves any further damage - we don;t need play acting and milking the ref in the game....

This is a super-tame version of the Lima hit on Pretorius.Chabal is so unfit he needs to roll around on the floor for a while so that he can get his breath back.The hit on Pretorius was much more intense and illegal, and still he got up and carried on, Chabal I've lost a lot of respect for you with your acting antics.

agree that linesmen have WAY too much say these days. Stick to watching the lines idiots.French National team contacted Chabal and offered him the captain's position on the Diving Team, but he couldn't fit his big head or his long air into the swimcap and therefore declined saying: "I'll always stay a diver by heart"

I think that was illegal to be honest. If i was ref i would have pulled him up but not carded. Don't think Chabal dived either just think it was the force of the hit although the rolling around on the floor afterwards was an exhaggeration. Funny as if i'm ever on the receiving end of a big hit i'll always do my best to get up immediately and pretend it didn't hurt.

I LOVE IT! Chabal is such a footballer - in every game he has played he has put an Oscar performance in somewhere - definitely was a huge hit - love the fact that he was flung like a rag doll..but he was a woos after that....no respect for the man.

Definately took a dive in my opinion (and i know im sat at a computer and i didnt recieve that hit) reasons i reckon, check out chabals feet, when he gets hit, one foot is off the ground (running) and then he places his foot down yet is thrown backwards, and he flies backwards when the argentinian players shoulder is no longer in contact....its hard to explain but if you watch his feet then watch his top half, the flying backwards seems to occur just a fraction too late....(and yeh the rolling and flailing arms thing was pretty lame!)

To be honest, I don't think the hit was what Chabal was rubbing his shoulder for.If you look at the replay you can see he lands on a fully flexed elbow. His shoulder takes the full brunt of his fall on the ground. before you all moan and say he's a pussy, I sprained my shouder badly once that way, and boys it really (for want of an expletive) hurts. I think that's what the rolling around on the floor is about.That said, if he hadn't come clean off the floor (all 110 kgs of him + the hair & beard) quite so easily, he wouldn't have had to deal with the pain.At the end of the day, he gets an oponent sin binned, and three points for his team: you can't argue with that!

I think that it was certainly a match defining moment, if not a wrc one.The french tried to do the opposite of what they had done all tournament under bernard laporte (play a nice open game like they used to) and got taken apart by the argentinians (even though at the beginning of the match it looked like they were going to win).

Indeed, such a "hit" may happen anytime on the pitch.Though, as for other similar "tackles", it should be avoided.simply said: it's unnecessary dangerous.Playing rugby is fun !Defeating your opponents is even more fun !!"Killing" them isn't that joyfull... then some of your opponents could also kill you in return.When playing Rugby, we're not playing chess, yeahhh, but during a game, I want to surpass my oponent by mean of my RUGBY-skills... not by perilous hits.Even K1-fighter did accept that fact. Why should we, Rugby players, not be able to do as well?
