RWC 2007 Team Tries of the Tournament

WC07 Team Tries of the Tournament

There's no doubt that the World Cup of 2007 will always be remembered as being one of the best tournaments to date. The level of competition was outstanding from the start, and continued throughout the tournament with some much publicised close encounters that astounded the most educated of rugby fans the world over.

In celebration of the best moments in the World Cup, we now present you with Rugbydump's Team Tries of the Tournament.

When compiling the list of the Top 5 candidates, we went for tries that were clear standouts in terms of brilliant interchanging passing, outstanding finishing, and of course that x-factor that will make you remember them for years to come.

These are our top five. Which is your number one?

No doubts here, it has to the USA's try from Takudzwa Ngwenyas against the Boks. More than a few pieces of individual brilliance there from Herkus and Cleverer topped-off by Dr. T's peerless finish against Habana. And this is the opinion of a South African.

Nice vid, tough call. I'm going to have to vote for the good ol' USA. I'm not saying this because I'm a yank or anything, but that try had everything. Great Interception, huge fend off, forward interplay, big pass, and an amazing display of athleticism from Takudzwa Ngwenya. Great show from the boys in Red, White, and Blue (we'll take the distinction from france some day). My only regret is that this try was against the Boks.also- I would have sworn that Z Nqwenya would be cut from the world cup squad after practically losing the Munster/Eagles warm up match through 4+ knock-ons from easy passes at the wing. Unacceptable, but lucky I was wrong...

Out of those, probably the USA try. One of my other favourites (which includes bias) was NZ vs Romania, about 23mins in, which took it to 29-0. Evans - Mauger - Lauaki - Collins - Ellis - Toeava - Sivivatu

Close call between C and E. Both were tries from minnows against the established teams and executed flawlessly!Gotta go with the Japanese on this one because of the sneaky snatch in the ruck. Stealing the ball in that kind of way is so wonderful especially when it leads to a try.

i just prefer the japan try over the USA because of the no. of passes, and the final one was a beauty. I think Habana is still quaicker but the immense sid-stepping made him check too much.

Some great tries, what a world cup. For me its Argentinas try, great team effort just chucking around like its a friendly, they play with so much passion and pride. Although the USA try has to come close, brilliant rugby

Argentinas try was the best try of the tournament,no doubt. But I ve got to mention the speed of nqwenya, who smoked habana. That showed everyone that habana is not the best player of the world, he is a winger the only thing he does is wait for the ball and run.the best players are hernandez and mccaw, those players dominate games and have a lot more habilities than habana.

I think either E or C. my reasons are they showed (minnows) great skill against supposedly much more professional teams. i think E was great because of the hand off, and also great passing catching skills and also the finish. but maybe C clinches it, because great awareness by the Japanese to see the ball was out, great steal, and great running and passing rugby!

Anonymous October 31, 2007 9:50 pm

I thought that both the Australian and the Japanses try showed great team skill whilst running at incredible pace, but then again it was just passing the ball down the line really. Although it has to be said that the Australia try, Tuqiri timed his run excellent. I think it is a close issue between the American and the Australian try, and as I am partly American and German I will supporte the minnows. I think the American try was outstanding because Z was uncapped before the RWC and he just simply beat Habana on the outside. So I think the order should be:American tryJapanese TryAustralian TrySouth Africa/Argentinia I didnt think the latter two were that great, just poor tackling and basketball passes and simple finishing.

I like the Japanese try best. I was at that game, just above where the try was scored, and it was sheer class. As an aside, those people claiming Habana is crap 'cause he got done on the outside, they know nothing. He's a class act and still the best winger in the world, anyone can get done on the outside, and this case just proves the old saying, it happens to the best of us. He is still rapid, he can defend with the best, and in terms of finishing he's peerless. And all this comes from the keyboard of a welshman....

Dan October 31, 2007 10:03 pm

Had to be Ngewnya's. And those who are saying all Habana has is speed, you're wrong. He's strong, he can bench 150 and for his size that's pretty goodHe's skillful, intercepting, the chip over the top vs Arg., etc.and MOST OF THE TIME he makes his tackles. The Japan try was good too, the steal and flow of the passes and running was way better than the Argintinians stumbling around the place throwing "basketball passes", as said by the person above who I agree with, and just genuine sloppy play

Anonymous October 31, 2007 10:10 pm

clearly the best try is D, the one who said "basketball passes" is completely wrong, contempomi just made the correct pause and passed the ball as he could, and that is the great thing about it. Then came the greatest pass ever: the hernandez-rimas alvarez one.I dont think the usa try should go in the "team try", but id vote for it in the "individual try"

Bobby.Nations October 31, 2007 10:16 pm

I gotta go for the USA try as the tops. It had just about everything you'd want: great interception, outstanding hand-off, forward linkage with backs, great presence on the outside. On top of that, it is the only one to finish between the post for the almost certain conversion.

Man! they're all good!!! How about that pass from Hernandez?? class... IRB gave Ngwenya the try of the year...for pure shock! I love it...i don't think he'll ever forget it...just goes to show, even the player of the year, can get it wrong! As for the knockers...when you score 8 tries in a world cup, you can diss Habana (I'm not SA), just think he's a class player, anyone see the one he scored in the S14 final to win the game?? As for my Favourite, I'm going Japan! Just the number of players involved, and passing under pressure, (tackles from wales) and great finishing...Best Team Try...

"That showed everyone that habana is not the best player of the world, he is a winger the only thing he does is wait for the ball and run." What an ignorant comment, Habana is one, if not the best players in the world because he is an all around player. His defense is superb (can you say dump tackle?) his kicking for touch, although rare, also demonstrate his ability (watch the SA v Eng summer matches, he had two monster kicks). Finally he has the pace, power, and vision to wreck a defense. He underestimated how fast Z Ngwenya was and I'll bet that he will never be burned like that again.

Hrmm, touch call, i think it has to go to the japanese, with the other tries the play is dominated by one player which then leads to a try ie peiterson for south africa vs tonga, corletto for agentina, or the awesome finish of Zee, but the reason the japs scroed was because of their ball movement, wich went through the hands very quickly, and scored not because one guy had already broken up the welsh backline

Brav November 01, 2007 1:23 am

Between Argentina and Japan could have gone either way. Very disappointed to see criticism of Habana. Although he is quick and usually just finishes off, his skill and ability in all departments is brilliant. His defense is solid, good under the high ball, kicks long for touch, often scores his own kick and chase, good handling. What more could you want from a winger?

Definitely Ngwenya's try - brilliant build-up and superb finish. To all those knocking Habana - you are just displaying your ignorance. Not only has Ngwnya admitted that Habana is quicker than him, but Habana has a great boot, tackles like a demon, and has skills to boot. This guy played scrumhalf and then outside centre before playing wing for just the last 3 seasons. Give Ngwenya all the credit for sure, but dont let jealousy taint your posts.

Can't believe there's even a debate about this. As a South African it pains me to say this, but the USA try is not just the best RWC07 try, but one of the best tries ever! Not far behind the Barbarian try scored by Gareth Edwards. The Barbarian try was more of a team try, wheras the USA try included a moment of absolute individual brilliance. Both where scored against formidable opposition. The one against the All Blacks, the other was against the world champions, and against the IRB player of the year. A final point to remember is that this was already voted for - and it beat all the other nominations hands down!

i think that the aus try was the best. went thru meny hands, good work with the kick from the scrumhalf and then through the hands the mitchell who scored.

What a great collection... I want more!Still, the Jap and the US tries still give me "goosebumps'. I would vote for the JAP try, as tey showed a really enjoyable rugby.

I think it has to be the argentinians try surely because of the brilliant run of corleto , the risky passes from corleto to the other guy and the one to contepomi and to finish the huge pass from hernandez was absolutely amazing.AND I'm french!Japan and USA are tied

A- the skill shown by lote tuquiri to catch the boxkick was amazing, and then to get the ball away. The guy who passed to (drew) mitchell could have dummied and gone betwwen the posts. Great try tho.POIS

The best try was clearly D, Argentina. The ball went from win to win and with an incredible pass from hernandez in his left side..the usa was really cool but it was individual, and japon is in desperately need of good passers.VAMO PUMA CARAJO!!

USA Easily, had all the parts of a classic, interception, huge fend (and that was huge) great passing, and Zee capping it off beating the best winger in the game today.

It's amazing the USA Eagles can get enough talent to muster up displays of athleticism like this, especially with the dominance of American Football (the lack of continuity and flow is disgusting, this coming from a Yank).Ngwenya without a doubt. Burning the rugger of the tourney and scoring against the world champions?USA Eagles.

No doubt that Habana is faster, its not easy catching someone when your standing still an having to turnaround wile they are in full speed. He is a all time great with great skills and speed. But my Choic is the Japanese try, good play by the underdogs.

I don't see how ppl can say that one try was far better than any other. My two favourite (and probably best) tries were the USA and Japan ones, with Japan slightly ahead, which I saw live on tv. At the time I was a bit annoyed that Wales had conceded a try against a supposed minnow, but even I could say at the time that it was a brilliant try.I'm surprised that particular Argentine try was chosen as I'm sure there were better ones.

Close call between A or E for my first one. I'm going to go with A. Brilliant timed kick by George then Tuqiri made a fantastic catch, offloaded to Berrick Barnes who rolled the ball over to Super 14 winger of the year Drew Mitchell. Also I like Kosuke Endo skinning Shane Williams when he went for the try line(in try C).It was a sneaky pickup from super scrumhalf Nasoni Roko from the Welsh ruck,he was lucky the Ref didn't penalise the Japanese. He's very lucky!.

Gotta say Ngwenya's try. Habana started to gain on him...the first time I've ever seen Habana not able to scramble back in time...now, that is fast! Great hand-off on Butch James too. I also enjoyed Japan's try. I had no idea that had that kind of skill. Excellent World Cup!

id say japan first because of the immense pace and handling skills with usa's in a very close second but the japanese were brilliant , first they turn the ball over and it goes through six or seven pairs of hands from right to left sides of the field and a geat finish
