RWC 2007 Individual Tries of the Tournament

WC07 Individual Tries of the Tournament

As promised, here are our World Cup 2007 Individual Tries of the Tournament.

A number of great tries were considered when narrowing down our Top 5 contenders. We stuck with this selection though based on skill, great acceleration, determination, and above all, the fact that they're the tries we enjoyed the most during the tournament.

Great individual efforts by each player involved and therefore deserved of the title of the best standout solo efforts of the 2007 World Cup.

Four backline players and one freak of nature. Difficult to say which is the number one try though out of these five. Your call?

Note: Some tries, such as the now famous USA try by Zee Ngwenya, are under the Team Tries post.

I think E. Playing what should have been a superior team, with 3 players swarming all over him and making his own luck with the kick to get the better of them. Also, it has to be set into the context of an awesome match and unbelievable result for Fiji.

Delasau! As soon as I saw the Shane Williams one (also very good) I remembered Delasau's one and hoped it'd be there. Habana's was good as well. Also, forgot to add which is why I deleted the other one, Rabeni's pass in Delasau's try was wonderful as well.

Gotta go with Williams, because he's is the winger with the most flair. I love seeing him play, dunno why cause I aint even a Wales supporter, but those sidesteps were amazing. Chabal second, but he could be first if it were against a higher tier team. He truly is a great lock, due to his strength, speed and stamina.

McAllister's try is the best i reckon. Perfect timing, perfect communication with fly half. Its really amazing he had found a nasty little gap among France's Marginot Line defence.Haha.All other tries were just bout running with the balls and bulldozing, side steping and evading the opponents. But McAllister's was purely technical move that clearly tells us that he had predicted the move and used his brains to execute it.and thats All Blacks.

Vilimoni!Where is his try against SA in this montage, fantastic player.I'd like to see a complation of the Wales Fiji game, especially where the Fijian 7 i think kicks stephen jones in the balls in front of the ref. classic coconut!

Don November 03, 2007 6:33 am

This is a hard one..Chabal is a monster and just went thru the defence like a hot knife thru butter..The Welshman was as FAST as hell.Habana has good balance and was able to squeeze his small frame thru the relatively bigger defense. The Fijian just used some fancy footwork to get to the tryline...It's a hard decision honestly between those 4.As for McAlister's try...it was more of a team effort than an individual try.

It would have to be between Chabal and Williams.... Williams takes the cake I think - we see big guys bashing through on a frequent basis, but we hardly ever see a winger make it more than half the pitch, turning 2 or 3 players without even been touched once. A brilliant display of speed and timing, as opposed to pure power. Don't get me wrong, the chabal try was great, it just wasnt good enough.

All good tries but I think Shane Williams try is overated, he had plenty of space to put the swerve on and never really looked troubled against his less agile opponents.Chabal's was a nice show of strength but doesn't seem as impressive as Lomu's efforts in the past.McAlister's try was a bit boring to be honest and I can think of plenty of other tries equal or better than that this world cup.Habana's was vgood. This is my favourite of his from this world cup. A similar try to the one he scored against England in the tests earlier this year. Ducked n weaved and found space out of nothing.Delasau was probably my pick (although could be seen as a team effort). A fantasic behind the back flick pass to start off the movement with Delasau speed and skills earning him the try (and a little luck)

Shame the Georgian player (Irakli Machkhaneli) didn't get a nod. http://rugbydump.blogspot.com/2007/09/georgian-heart-huge-hit-effects-try.htmlThat guy's nasty tackle, scoop up of the ball, and try was worthy. Not to take away from any of these. And yes, Shane Williams looks like a force field. As a fat bastard, I always dreamed of planting one of these shifty types in a match... But alas, with a guy the likes of Shane, is it nothing but a dream -- you can't catch him.

These are all good tries. But an individual have to do something exceptionally better than the others to be nominated as the best. McAlister & Delasau were good, but did not strike me as exceptional. In fact, I find Z's try vs SA a lot better (skill wise). Habana's try is special, but strangely rate his try vs Tonga even higher. Shane William's try was also special, but rate it 3rd or 4th best. The try that took my breath away (even though against weaker opposition), was Chabal's. It had everything - timing, speed, balance, and amazing strength. Even though I'm a big fan of Habana, Williams & z, the award should go to a forward of all people, mr 'Not speak English'. Well done to ALL the players (not just these few nominees), for entertaining us with some fantastic tries in the best world cup ever!

I think McAlister is sent perfectly into the gap, so he doesn't do the biggest part of it. Delasau is a bit lucky on his kick... Habana slows down at the end to score his try. It's like " get me if you can " and it's not very gentleman. So i think Chabal's try is the best try in Forward's style when Shane Williams' try is definitely the most beautiful because of his intelligence and skills... and dive !!

Anonymous November 08, 2007 4:04 pm

"I think McAlister is sent perfectly into the gap, so he doesn't do the biggest part of it. " hmmm i beg to differ cos mcalister has to take a running line into the gap before someone else can pass him the ball. its usually the guy going to receive the ball that spots the gap, makes the run.. and calls for the ball..

Anonymous November 08, 2007 4:28 pm

I definiately think the Fiji one was the most impressive individual effort with two kicks and beating three guys to the ball. i dont even think the first ones were really "individual tries" so chabals have to be next (in that order cause habana is just to fast so its not really even fair) plus running through a defense is more impressive than running past one.

The Big Bosh November 08, 2007 4:33 pm

Chabal... you pay the other guys to run through backlines, you pay Chabal to hit them. Instead, we see the behemoth gassing through 3 players and boshing over a 4th to the try line. Surpising, amazing, hairy!

I think Habana's try vs Somoa should've been nominated as well. And his try vs Argentina is better than some of the nominations. But that would mean that he'd have 3 nominated tries against the others, and that would just not be fair now, would it. However, in this contest the Grizzly bear (Ol Chab's) is the clear winner.

players like Jason Robinson and Shane Williams are a dying breed in this game, goes to show great footwork can beat anyone-no matter how big they are.Shane Williams all the way.

Can't believe the US try against SA where Habana lost the chase isn't even included!

Delasau's try definitely! His try is alot more difficult since he was chased with more than one player. He repeated the same play against SA in the quarter final. That's what makes a great player.

You gotta love Vilimone Delasau's try! You don't see many of those these days, and coming from a more inferior time like Fiji, which in my opinion is not true at all, they are definitely not inferior, they just need to work at it. Coming from the islands myself, we Islanders pride ourselves when a member of our growing community can pull off such an amazing stunt (or try, in this case)!!! Go Fiji! :)

Shane Williams' s try was the best and plus the speed that he went at was awsome and the sidesteps that he has done to the player was also awsome. So Shane Williams try was the best and no one can say anything else and that try was probaly the best try that i' ve ever seen.

I am somewhere in the crowd on both the Delasau and Williams tries. The TV does not give little shane enough credit, it looked even crazier from close up, that's my number one.Habana's wicked sidestep and Chabal's thunderous charge complete my top three. Then comes Delasau, gutsy, and lucky.McAlister just get's great service from Carter and a nice gap, Collins does the hardest work on that try (pound the defence and pass out of contact) Easy try for McAlister in the end.I think that you should make a video compling the top Kick --> try. With the likes of Michalak to Clerc (FRA vs IRE) and Wilko to Sackey (ENG vs SAM)Some of those were awesome.

i think that delasau's try was one that can be recorded as the best individual try of the tounament. key word is individual try. think, run, and try later on.should check his latest try on the henikan cup tournament

i think delesau's try against south africa in the quarter finals was better...wen he chip and chased it....superb!!

yeah i don't think the angle shown in the video does williams justice it has to be No1, his pace and footwork were incredible for that try and he's pushing 30. no-one moves like shane! except maybe Jason Robison, and ol Chris Cullen.Second is Delasau, because i think while superb. it was also slightly lucky.

Chabal is if not the best one of the best no. 8's ever but plaing a team like namibia i was expecting hm to do that so it was not much surprise to me when i saw him score but he its always nice to see a big forward smash his way through a whole back line! Habana is a stunnin player and when ever he gets the ball he pretty much scores but also shane williams try was absouloutley spectacular and that side step when he left the last man for dead WOW! but the last one the fijian in E he has to win because once he got the and was in space and then when 3 welsh defenders when on him he kicked ahead and still with 3 defenders he caught that ball INCREDIBLE!!

eh, hangover....ur a goose. williams try was average? he had plenty of room and less agile opponents? bro, he beat 3 fijians clenly, 2 more for pace....and we're talkin fiji here. less agile than....well, no one. williams was an amazing little guy try, and chabals was a greta big man try. he beat 3 forwards, lomu usually only had to beat backs....and mike catt dont count. ever. and im a kiwi too!!

i think shane's try was best individual try. There was a certain amount of luck with the bounce of delasau's try. I've played touch rugby with shane and his accelaration and side step are amazing! quickest player in the world over 40 meters.

To the anonamyous guy above, it was great skill, but would you be so blind as to not admit that the bounce was very kind to him? that would be only criticism of such a great tryhe's such a good player though.Williams for me.

I'd have to go with WIlliams' try. It was immense how he managed to carve through the defence. it showed just how powerful, fast, and tactically brilliant he is. And it hurts me to say that as an Englishman :DEddyD

Clearly the best is chabal as he first showed great pace for a forward to beat a back on the outside, and then showed great strength to bulldoze over 2 more players, it's the sorta try that you'd expect from Lomu in his prime

1. mcalister2. williams3. habana4. delasau5. chabal.chabals try was awful, all it showed was how poor namibias defence is. same with habana's and as for delasau is was luck of the draw with the bounce. mcalister was pure class, great line break, hitting a great line then stepping to make space, throwing an inch perfect pass then carrying on and not giving up and then he gets the reward

Shane williams try is the best. No luck involved like in the fiji try. He beat players with speed and step. Chabals was good but agaisnt namibia anyone could do that. Habana was pretty good but not up there with williams. Mcalister was a great TEAM try it wasnt individual

Delesau VS Wales DEFINITELY WAS NOT A TRY THE BALL WAS OUT FIRST AND I'M NOT JUST SAYING THIS COS IM WELSH MYSELF I SWEAR IT WAS NOT A TRY BUT HE AWARDED IT ANYWAY.but anywayback to the subject the best try was: ALL OF THEM EXCEPT FOR THAT DAMN "TRY" BY FIJI. AND WE HAD A SUPER PANTS COACH AT THE TIME BUT NOW WE HAVE KIWI WARREN GATLAND AND HE ROCKS. SO FAR WALES ONLY LOST THREE GAME WITH HIM. AND IN 2008 SIX NATIONS ONLY CONCEDED TWO TRIES THE WHOLE TOURNAMENT. AND PEOPLE SAY WE SUCK. NOT ANYMORE.
