Alix Popham on Rafael Ibanez - Six Nations 2007

Alix Popham on Rafael Ibanez - Six Nations 2007

This is a great hit from Wales' Alix Popham on Rafael Ibanez from last seasons Six Nations encounter between the Welsh and the French.

Hooker Ibanez does well to hang onto the ball and present it nicely for the rest of his forwards.

Hopefully we'll see more great hits like that in the upcoming Six Nations 2008.

Reminded me a little bit about Chabal eradicating tackle on Masoe. Wasn't as hard or ferocious, but you can see there are some similarities.

It's a beautiful tackle(i don't know in the rules, if it's not a kick, if it's possible to tackle a man in the air, because the action is during the game. someone knows?)

Good hit but why doesnt he get up on his feet straight away. Popham is good but gets injured far to often and I am sorry to say is a bit thick.Typical valley biffa.

after the tribute to martin corry, is it possible to get tributes to ibanez or betsen? surely these two must be rated as some of france's greatest players?

Surely your having a laff? Betsen was over rater, fair play he made the tackles and had some great runs, but he was lacking a certain edge.......and ibanez.........ibanez is small, fat and suffers from little man syndrome.

Runs hard, tackles harder, consistant when all around him crumble, the master of disruption. Surely the mark of a great player? Ibanez, possibly im biased towards him, being a hooker, but i think facing up to him in the front row would be a terrifying prospect!

Jamesh Popham didnt get nailed he did the nailing, good job you arent a lawyer. It looks as if he is holding Ibanez down or at least failing to roll away. Can Rugbydump try and find the Dale Mckintosh clip where he shakes James Griffiths and tells him not to be a stupid sod. Happened a long while ago in a Swansea Pontypridd game and Grifffiths had foolishy thrown a punch at the "Chief"

has anyone got the clip of Popham smashing one of the Maka brothers in the llanelli v Toulose game from a few years bk?that hit was much bigger than this one.

Ibaez was in the air, and thus the hit was subject to penalty. Then again, I would have missed it as a referee.

meh, bit of a soft hit compare to the ma'a nonu shot on here a couple days eairler, but then again this is JUST popham and not NONU-Liam

Well, the nonu tackle was on a much lighter player, so that's irrelevant. To nail someone as heavily set as Ibanez is a whole different ball-game.

Perfectly legal tackle guys, because this is a prime example of a hospital pass. Skrela gave a lousy pass which Ibanez as a short man had to jump to catch. His (or Skrela's) fault that he was tackled in mid-air and Popham did well to nail him while he was at his weakest.

"LAW 10.4 DANGEROUS PLAY AND MISCONDUCT(h) Tackling the jumper in the air. A player must not tackle nortap, push or pull the foot or feet of an opponent jumping for the ball in a lineout OR IN OPEN PLAY." Penalty: Penalty KickNote that a player in open play is still off limits from a hit. However, in the grand scheme of things, any team throwing a pass like that doesn't deserve to keep ball. However, this is more of a safety issue. Perhaps this another reason the IRB should break off the Laws from Test Rugby from those for schoolboy rugby. A great rule for youth/rec leagues. But at the INTL level, we all want to plainly see a nice hit like this...

part of the commentary (1.10) the commentator calls the tackle un veritable caramel. WTF does that actually mean?

worldsworstnumber2 January 27, 2008 10:13 am

It is much more likely to cause serious harm when tackled in the air by a galloping international, than by being hit by a amateur or junior player. I understand that their bodies would be more resistant at international level, but the force hitting them would be so much stronger. However, just because the rules dont like it, we dont have to stop enjoying hits like that!

While I don't speak French.."Veritable Caramel"Veritable = veritable (its a cognate), meaning a true or real exampleCaramel = a candySo I guess the hit was sweet..

Here is the exact commentary in French: disdn't know that CLOWNS where TACKLING...Ah, cest pas un clown, quand il vous plaque, cest pas du tout un clown, Alix Popham, cest un vritable caramel, il faut tre costaud pour encaisser le plaquage
