Brian Lima picks on Mirco Bergamasco in the Tsunami Charity Match of 2005

Brian Lima picks on Mirco Bergamasco in the Tsunami Charity Match of 2005

In 2005 the North Hemisphere faced the Southern Hemisphere in an IRB Rugby Aid match at Twickenham. The match was played to raise money for the United Nations World Food Programme to support victims of the of the tragic Indian Ocean Tsunami that wrecked thousands of peoples lives and homes forever.

Top players from around the world were chosen to represent the relevant teams, and a great match was played for a great cause.

The Southern Hemisphere came out tops with a final score of 54-19, with a lot of the Tri Nations players featuring strongly, helped by great performances by Samoans Sititi & Lima.

Over 40 000 people attended the game, and it was a success, reportedly raising over a million pounds for this good cause.

Brian Lima wasn't feeling as charitable though, as Italian wing Mirco Bergamasco soon found out in the worst possible way. The 'Chiropractor' picked on him all day, making Bergamasco wonder what he'd done to deserve that treatment from one of the hardest hitters the games ever seen.

Ha, I love them!I remember watching this game and thinking about poor mirco! One man you do not want to run into once in game! Let alone twice!

I dont wanna be a player-hater or anything, but this man should not be celebrated for his brand of tackling! He hardly used his arms and usually tackled high and often late. This is nothing to do with agendas - though I am a South African, I admire all the big tacklers from whichever country, be it Collins, Mortlock, Lewsey, Jason White, Chabal etc.Lets put away the patriarchal attitude to Pacific Island rugby and respect them enough to hold them to the same standards as the rest of us when it comes to dirty play - something that was not done at the last WC.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with either of those tackles.People who complain about those kind of tackles fall into two groups. They are either:a) People who couldn't take a hit in their playing daysb) Stuart BarnesNB: People who fit into category b) will most likely be entitled to fit into category a)

Brian Lima is the worlds biggest tackler. He really deserves his title as "The Chiropractor"I thought the match was to raise money for the tsunami not to create another one. The speed of which Lima hit Bergamasco.

On the first hit, the referee whistled a penalty at/near the tackle. Was that for Lima's hit or something else? (The hit looked OK to me)

Lima's hits on Wilkinson in the RWC were both high and his hit on Pretorius was also questionable but these two hits were fine.

Both of those hits were fine, below shoulder height and used both arms, to wraps and the shoulder to drive.Pretty text book to be fair.Lima does tend to over eggthe pudding a bit though always going for the big spectacular hit rather than just tackling and jackling.Again he often ends up making illegal hits in his haste to go for the big hit, don't think there's anything Malicious in it other than he just loves the physical side of the game.the hit on Wilkinson has been over hyped as well, it was just a bad tackle, not calculated and not meant to do anything other then smash Wilko backwards, just miss timed.Ah! well, back to this Poor Mirco, gotta wonder why god would do that to you, especially when you're playing in a charity match.

he deffinatly tries for the big hits at all times, its a roll of the dice if it works or notthats how i like to play, but i hit a little lower, not as many penaltiesboth hits were good, if they were illegal and didnt get called, means they werent illegal, leave them be hahaand to scandal thats the funniest thing i ever heard, about stuart barnes haha well put

for all those people that are questionning the legality of the tackles (or lack there of)... let me put it this way; the first one is clearly legal - arms, not too high etc. The second one would also be legal for the same reasons - but there is something most people who say it is fine seem to be overlooking - bergamasco doesn't actually have the ball. How can this tackle be legal even if the technique is fine?

Chris Parberry January 30, 2008 12:14 am

the second one is fine cause after someone passes it you have a second allowance to hit them that refs give you, and he couldnt tell really if he was dummying the pass or not, also, he was in the way between him and the player who was supposed to have the ball, meaning he was only hitting what was obstructing himnothing there would ever get called

"On the first hit, the referee whistled a penalty at/near the tackle. Was that for Lima's hit or something else? (The hit looked OK to me)"Pretty sure the penalty would be because Lima had left his feet in the tackle and never tried to roll away.

Not that it really matters, but in the second hit he doesnt use his arms other than dropping them on the lil guy after hitting him.

"bergamasco doesn't actually have the ball. How can this tackle be legal even if the technique is fine?"YAY!! we have a pedant in our midst.Bergamasco don't have the ball because his ridiculous hair cut blinds him to Paterson's genius and he drops the ball.Ergo, he was she man in possession when Lima lined him up, the fact he dropped the ball doesn't mean he suddenly didn't have the ball and that lima should somehow miraculously stop himself in mid flight and avoid hurting mr soul glow!If anything the timing of the tackle there is pretty spot on, except Bergo dropped the ball.

"to all those haters crying about if his tackles are not legal or what ever.....THIS IS RUGBY......mess around n get ur head knocked off"Sorry, but it's this kind of attitude that makes people think that ruggers are a bunch of slobbering mouth-breathers who don't really want a rugby match so much as a brawl without the arrests. This IS rugby, and there are rules, many of which are designed to prevent injuries. The second tack may have been legal, but only just. His arms didn't even *try* to wrap."People who complain about those kind of tackles fall into two groups. They are either:a) People who couldn't take a hit in their playing daysb) Stuart Barnes"People who make comments like that fall into two categories:a) People who've never actually taken a hit, but watch a lot of rugby on the teleb) People who haven't actually cracked open the law book to see what a proper tackle consists of.
