Alessandro Troncon floors Peter Stringer in 2001
As Ireland meet Italy at Croke Park on Saturday in the opener of the Six Nations 2008, we thought we'd pull out a clip from a previous meeting between the two sides, from 2001.
Five minutes from the end of the encounter, in which Ireland won 41-22, Italian scrum half Alessandro Troncon soured the occasion with an extravagant swinging punch on opposite number Peter Stringer.
Troncon was red carded for his actions, which resulted in the citing committee dishing out a three week ban for the punch which sent Stringer to the floor clutching his face.
We hopefully won't see a repeat of this on Saturday, as both Ireland and Italy need to focus on playing some good rugby, with both sides still having a lot to prove after disappointing World Cup performances.

"extravagant"???...it's extravagant the way that Mr Stringer use to obstruct Tronky movement!!And we also hopefully for next Saturday to have not to see this kind of imagine... from both side!

you can see troncon imediately realises he's done wrong. if your losing and it's the end of the game and someone tugs on your shirt off the ball you're bound to lash out.

I do agree with Lock#5#. Moreover if you check sec 43 on the video (top right). You will notice Sringer was already "discussing" with Lo Cicero (#1).

However much I like the guy, Troncon was always a bit of a loose cannon. Look at his last game in the Italy shirt. The man was looking for a fight at every opportunity. Fair play he was pumped up, and it was a must win WC game but that was just daft.

I dunno if "spoilt little child" is very accurate. He's mouthy, in-your-face and an absolute pest, but he rarely if ever gives away yards for lip to the ref and is extremely effective in his position. I doubt there's a rugby supporter in the world who wouldn't want their 9 to have all of the abovementioned qualities.

Love this, Stampy Stringer getting it. Live by the sword get knocked out. Love the bleating paddy commentators, its so awful, disgrace etc. No suprise I cant stand Stringer, one of the most overated dwarfs to ever play the game.

Not trying to "pretty up" the game, but I find it schizophrenic that they go out of their way to punish a well-deserved punch to the face, but not address both root causes (Stringer, and Troncons temper)Stringer's play was also cynical. If not give him a one-match ban, at least log a warning on his Disciplinary Record.Either let Troncon self-police, or punish both of them.

Troncon's ban was 30-days. I think the 3 weeks came from him missing three 6N fixtures.

A scrum half always needs to be a bastard and lives on the edge. Troncon is stupid to let himself be challenged. The game is also what the ref is able to see, a little shirt pulling is difficult to see, the punch can't be ignored.

Lol at all the fools - yeah yeah, he got smacked, Ireland also raped Italy so I coulden't care less, just shows how pathetic Troncon is, a better man woulden't have lashed out. The scrum halfs job is to be an annoying little pain in the arse, such as life you either deal with it, or as Troncon demonstrates so well, you get sent off.

At keast the 'Paddy' commentators are always fair, not like the English ones, always talking about how great they always are even when they are shit. Why would Irish people blame the English for this? dont be such an A-hole.Scotland will win the 6 nations this year, mark my words..........

It's kind of hard to feel sorry for Strniger getting a clump, he's a niggly little sh*t, like al good scrum halves should be.And while i'd never condone punching another player, he comes form offside, and obstruct a player with intentional foul play. he should have been yellow carded for his misdemeanour as well.Anyway, silly over reaction by Troncon, but as i said hard to feel sorry for stringer having watched him punch kick and stamp on half the Magners League, heini cup and 6nations players over the last few years.:)

goodnumber10,I gotta ask.. who is a bigger overall pest, Stringer or Steve Devine? Watching S14 last season, Devine was probably the guy who I wanted to see get popped more than anyone out there -- more than any pretty-boy Aussie or meateating Jaapie.

I agree with the guy who said Stringer is overated. Yeah punching bad etc... but when I read the title of the video, i couldnt wait to watch it!! And the reason was that it was Peter Srringer!!! Stringer cannot pass= not a very good scrum half!!

What would you expect the RTE commentators to say ? They're quite fair in general. If that had been The other way round (hypothetically!) then the reaction would have been the same. They also mention stringer grabbing troncon's shirt and being offside....God I'd take the irish commentators over the BBC ones any day(excluding ryle nugent of course). Third centre

"Stringer's passing is crap"....? You avin a laugh? That's why he's in the team, because his passing is good, he's not a brilliant player but you cannot question his passing ability. Don't see how anyone can think he deserved a yellow card as well just for bloody shirt pulling. You're not football fans are you?

Tronky really is our pride!!!101 caps whit Italy and his first international match was the first for Gregan too!!!It's not the first time that Stringer get's knocked by italians, the last one was Parisse a few years ago

How are the commentators? Blooy whingers. In Australia they'd just be having a laugh. it's just a punch he didn't stab the guy.

Both commentators are irish, and the one that speaks 1st is VERY biased towards the irish teams when he commentates on magners league games.
