Friday Funnies - Thinus Delport trips over the ball
It's hard to describe what happens here. The former Springboks, Cats, and Worcester Warriors fullback makes a huge mess of his attempted kick ahead, nearly breaking an ankle in the process.
Lots of things happen on the rugby field in the heat of the moment, but this is one of the more amusing things I've seen.
Embarrassing for the player at hand, but worth a chuckle for the fans.

Yes it's a knock-on because the player doesn't touch the ball with the leg or the foot before its on the ground.

^^^ hmmmm, very true. i think it is a knock-on because he does not keep obvious control of the ball. but if it would have hit his boot first, he would gotten away with it.

For a drop kick to be a kick and not a knock on the player has to have control of the ball the entire way through the action (ie they have to have intended to drop the ball). So there is a specific rule for drop kicks.

Hahaha...funny.Umm, concerning the knock on question...now I do know the other player from the other team had control of the ball afterwards...shdnt that be an advantage hence no call for a knock-on?

drop kick is a knock-on? good question, i think it is, because the player dont have all the control of the ball, the floor is so unregular. the player suppose where the ball go, but don't have all certainty!

It is a knock on because the ball doesn't touch the front of his foot, it only touches the bottom of it. I'm not making this up, there was a case a few years ago when someone tried to score a conversion by drop-kicking the ball over with his heel, which was disallowed as it was deemed "not a kick".

like you said above regarding a drop kick you intend to kick the ball after you drop it, in this case he clearly intends to kick the ball when it is dropped so he does not lose control of it albeit with his two left feet. No knock on in my opinion

i know what u r on about with the backheel dropkick the only one in my memory was attempted by a blues player called mark ring.

its not a knock on cause its played below the knee regardless. its not really about control, its about how the ball is played once its released! so you can bounce the ball ten feet infront of you but if you dont play it at all, thats lost forward, if you manage to kick it, thats a drop kick!

Anonymous above.. if you drop a ball accidentally, then lunge forward and kick it, that is still a knock on, not a drop kick. It's down to refs interpretation, but some years back they changed that rule so that guys wouldn't just kick it whenever they dropped the ball by mistake.
