Schalk Burger suspended for two weeks
Stormers loose forward Schalk Burger was yesterday suspended for two weeks following an unsavoury incident against the Sharks on the weekend. Burger was found guilty of "an act contrary to good sportsmanship" by a Super 14 disciplinary committee.
Burger will miss the upcoming clashes with the Crusaders and the Reds, after his suspension comes for making an abusive gesture to a touch judge after he had been pinned as being involved in a scuffle.
Schalk is one of the best players in the world and normally keeps his cool, but he totally lost it here and I'd hate to see this type of behaviour on a rugby field again. They already have a sport for that - soccer.

I love that rugby will allow a couple of guys to swing a few punches at each other and it's rightly regarded as a bit of handbags. the great things is that rugby doesn't stand for even the slightest derogatory gesture towards an official. they should be respected at all times and are always called 'sir' by players. In football you see people screaming and cursing at referees and it's a disgraceful example to set.

What a wally. Seriously, if he wasn't playing rugby he'd be ploughing a field somewhere in the Vrystad and then locked in his bedroom each night.

Burger needs to be careful. certainly in the northern hemisphere, he has a reputation of someone whose temper overshadows his abilities. Felix, you are absolutely right.Jonathan

yeh in all fairness i cant see how burger normally keeps his cool.....normally keeps his cool with refs and things but he doesnt have the cleanest slate!i actually saw part of a fooball match the other day when someone was tripped etc etc (as they are in football) and the ref was walking over to make a decision, and he became engulfed in both teams players, they were pulling him and pushing him (not trying to fight him but trying to get their own way) lets hope nothing like this happens in rugby.....lets leave contact with refs to during game play lol!

Besides that crazy tackle against Samoa in the WC, Schalk has infact got a pretty clean slate. Yes, penalties and yellow cards at the breakdown are fairly common, as they are with someone like McCaw or Smith. The point is that these actions were totally out of character of the man. He normally channels his aggression into the game, not at refs, players, or touch judges. And call me a dreamer, but judging by his incensed reaction, I'd go as far as saying the touchjudge may have got it wrong. Just a thought.

Schalk is a flanker, always borderline in the field. However intimidating a official is a big no-no and the punishment therefore is totally right. If we allow that attitude then we would need to make the ball round and join the the whimps game.

Yea well done with the ban. That sort of thing needs to be clamped down on quickly before we start seeing some of the disgracefull stuff in soccer. Would have hoped that if the ref saw it the card would have quickly changed colour though.

a 2 week ban is abit harsh for just pointing at the linesman..Maybe a slap on the wrist and Shalker appologising would have been a fairer punishment

Yeah, happy to see rubbish like that not tolerated in rugby. In soccer it's consider a fair goal if the opposition don't scream and whine at the ref.I admire Burger but he's got to clean up his act, that was just childish and foolish.And don't be to hard on Geordan^, he's improved

there was no need for a yellow card seeing as they didn't even replay it so i can see why he would be angry hes got balls though 2 week ban when other serious misconduct gets like a week
