Jason White smothering hit on Paul Sackey

Jason White smothering hit on Paul Sackey

It's been a long time since I've had so many requests for a particular clip, but since Saturday, the requests board and my inbox has been inundated with messages from Scottish fans & neutrals alike who've been wanting to see this hit.

We've said it before - Jason White is a lethal tackler. Not a dirty tackler, but a technically perfect, hard hitting, in your face, do not run at me type of tackler.

Coming on as a sub against England on the weekend, White laid into wing Paul Sackey with another one of his trademark hits, lifting the Murrayfield crowd and of course, his Scottish team who later went on to lift the Calcutta Cup.

Congrats to Scotland on the victory and to Jason White, cracking tackle. Is there a harder hitting (legal) tackler in international rugby out there I wonder? Doubt it.

it's an awesome offensive tackle!

Not good body position from Sackey tbh. Is White needing medical attention after the tackle too? Is that him sat on his arse at the end of the clip?

Anonymous March 11, 2008 3:08 pm

haha, pull the other one mate!! With 7 minutes left and a Scotland scrum he was just wasting some time with Scotland leading. What body position would you like Sackey to adopt? Bend over perhaps???

Kurt,Those are pretty sour grapes.

It's not that he is a hard hitter (which of course he is) it's more that he's technically spot-on. Jerry Collins is a big hitter, but I'd pick White anytime over him, as he's in the right place at the right time. He also has the knack of legally preventing the tackled player from releasing the ball, something that even excellent but smaller back-rowers (George Smith/Neil Back) have problems with. Most back-rowers at this level are awesome hitters when given the chance, but its those that make the chances that stand-out.Jason White every time (the b*st*rd!)

"Not a dirty tackler, but a technically perfect, hard hitting, in your face, do not run at me type of tackler."Well said Rugbydump.Kerivoula, great insight about the legally preventing tackled player from releasing.I'll add my bit. White's leg drive in a way is more lethal to offense's ball retention than a quick shot from the pint O'Guiness (Jerry Collins). As White continues to drive the player backwards, he moves the pile backwards. Thus White creates either a gate (tackle) or last foot (maul/ruck) further back, making it difficult for offensive players to join with any forward momentum.Let's hope he has a long, healthy career.

Kurt you sound like a right idiot! Though I presume your an Englishman so I understand your frustration and will let you off! I can promise you I looked on this site this morning, then was reading an article on planetrugby a moment ago when I suddenly thought "I wonder when rugbydump will get the Sackey hit up"....and low and behold it was there! Great work boys! The Super 14 highlights is a godsend!

Does anyone recall a "dirty" or "dangerous" hit from Jason White? Not trying to be a hater. But if the guy always hits this hard and clean, than it can only add to his mystique.Great to see that after the hit, half the Scottish team came in and gave him a pat on the back.

Kurt it was his contact lense. dont worry about Jason. Take it you're an Englishmen. No wonder most countires hate the english when it comes to Rugby and sport in general. so arrogant.

Another great hit from Jason White. The only problem i've got is that he makes no attempt to roll away after the tackle. One this is a penalty to england and two, if he had the scottish would have had quick turnover ball because the english would have had to go back to join through the gate, and there was already scottish support at the breakdown. Great hit in the first place though!

at what point did he have anytime to roll away? he didnt.

Rob,By taking an inane but innocuous comment and turning it into jingoistic xenophobia, you put yourself well below the author of the inane comment in the first place.Calm down, pick up your toys, and stop pretending to speak for the world.

its weird, i dont think slowing down this clip added to it at all - it usually does but somehow this time it only looks good at normal speed

Great hit and without doubt the highlight of the match (this coming from an Englishman).Moments like that lift the entire team plus the crowd and are invaluable. No way White should get done for not releasing there.Pen to the Scots end of.I reckon Italy will win on Sat though if they can keep their (limited) discipline.

When he went onto the pitch the roar was amazing. I was in a bar about 25 minutes from Murrayfield watching the rugby and everybody in the bar started cheering. Then the hit came in and everybody was jumping up and down. It is not his greatest hit ever but in the context of the game it was awesome.

I wanted to say the legdrive thing, sometimes winning meters is much better than winning the ball at all, as you boost your teams morale and create the proper situation for a turnover and, the right spaces to target...

im not sure if someone has already said it but i think that white had to get a new contact lense put in thats why the medic is on.

Well said kerivoula, let's talk about rugby eh lads, not tired old cliches.Scotland definitely need Jason White fit and playing every game, he's their best player by some way. Picking a Lions squad today I reckon he'd be one of the first names down. Others? Probably only Sheridan from England at the moment, from Wales, Shane Williams and James Hook would be shoo-ins from Ireland I reckon BOD would still be favourite. What do you think guys? One game left in the 6 Nations, who's your starting Lions XV?

chris March 11, 2008 10:35 pm

what an awesome tackle! I wonder if he prefers defending than attacking, that was one of the things i remember tahu from the waratahs saying in an interview - hopefully he can pull off some big ones against the crusadors.i dont kno a whole lot of a nth hemisphere players or anything so my lions starting XV would be totally whack, but i would love to see banahan in the side and stomp all over habana in the next lions tour.

Misses the bench, since I have Hook who can cover #10Chris Patterson. Misses the cut, since I have enough goal kickers. Prefer a pure try scorer (then again, so would the entire country of Scotland), maybe Patterson could have run more with better backs.Girvan Dempsey: Tough call vs. Rougerie

Tom Shanklin: Geraint, I think your pick of Chanchre at #13 over my choice of The Bod is right on.. I guess O'Driscoll was a bit of a sentimental pick.Ian Gough has also has a solid tournament too, probably shown more week-to-week than A.W. Jones, but I think in form, A.W. brings more.

Just so everyone knows, the team i wrote down would be for the Lions, as Will earlier asked who people would choose for the Lions, which is why no italians or french were in my side. For those who chose Wilkinson and Vainikolo, i would have probably agreed with them before this tournament, but both players have had very poor tournaments and don't feel they'd deserve a place in the Lions team at the moment.

Sorry to nitpick and show anti- english resentment, but it would have been great to see this clip with the Scottish commentaters...We have had to put up with English bias on the British Broadcasting for too long so it was nice to finally have someone talk about the action on screen... if i remember, beattie talks about the tackle during the reply etc while B Moore gives it a glancing 'great tackle' then talks some rubbish about england....

Any reason everyone is trying to pick a Lions-only team rather than a 6N team? The French & Italian players in the current competition deserve some credit. As for naming a Lions team, we have more than whole year to do that.
