James Haskell late hit on Jordan Crane

James Haskell late hit on Jordan Crane

This massive late tackle by the James Haskell went unpunished this past weekend in the Guinness Premiership match against the Leicester Tigers at Welford Road.

The London Wasps man lined up opposing number eight Jordan Crane and let rip, despite the ball having been passed long before the hit. Not only was the tackle late, but Haskell pretty much led with the shoulder and should have been penalised for it.

Somehow the ref missed it though, and actually awarded a penalty to Wasps for a different infringement in the same passage of play.

Oh My Days!! Talk about being lucky... Not being caught by the ref...That "tackle" was atrocious!! Also, seems like his shoulder caught Crane's neck!! Ouch!!

Cristoff, your views are worrying to say the least. The only passion that shows is a passion for violence. It wasn't even a question of timing, he saw that the ball had gone and swang his shoulder round to make contact with Crane's face. It was completely intentional and an absolutely disgusting infringement - that he avoided penalisation is ridiculous, avoiding citation was a miracle.Anyone claiming to be a rugby fan and admiring this as a 'big hit' would be better served watching some UFC, or better still - going down to the local park and taking a baseball bat to someone's face - it sounds like you'd enjoy it a lot more than watching sport. And yes, I enjoy watching the big hits as much as the next bloke - had it been accidental it would have just been a case of Crane being unlucky, but seeing attrociously dangerous and calculated violence is not on at all.

thats a f-ing cheap shot thats one which can cause some sreius neck and back problems shame on you!theres a boy who plays over here for club and the only reason he plays is to spear tackle people i wonder if he would still laugh if he broke a guys neck?

Looked like a revenge shot. Bit cheap but it happens. Anonymous (who talks about it being a passion for violence), you need to toughen up pal, it's rugby not tiddlywinks.

I dont know may be I am in a bad mood but that is just plain wrong, a really cheap shot. Haskel is a big unit and one day that type of thing is going to leave a name player in a wheel chair.

The only problem with that hit was the timing. He came late and hit the manw ithout the ball if he had got this right that would have been a superb hit.IF you watch the slow mode he made an attempt to wrap the man up with his arms which means it wasn't a shoulder charge. It was bodering on high but he didn't make contact with the neck the impact makes it look like he does but his shoulder made contact with Crofts shoulder not a high tackle in my books.

Sorry Cranes shoulder getting my up and coming flankers confused

Nova April 04, 2008 9:39 am

Initial contact was on the chest then the jaw as Crane started to fall back - was late, no attempt to wrap his arms (hitting with the right shoulder only swinging the right arm to get more momentum into the impact). Also, Crane is not a flanker, he's a No.8

England can keep Haskell..and thats why, when i first saw him i really rated him. but he's so prone to giving away penalty after penalty. and that "hit" if you can call it that, speaks for itself.

Haskell's a good player but fire and passion don't exactly spring to mind when you think about him...I mean he's not exactly Dallaligo is he ?

look at the tackle haskell makes in the very next play, hes involved all the time and with that physicality dallaglio just cant comparefire and passion are definitely things that come to mind about haskell

I think crane should be playing for eng some time soon. He never has a bad game and always makes an impact to the match. It was a cheap shot and should have been a penalty, but not a yellow.

There is one replay of it where you can kind of see it from the same angle as the referee. As Crane turns his shoulder, it is quite hard to see where the ball is, which might explain why the referee missed the fact that it was late, because he couldn't see the ball.

i dont know what all the fuss is about. these "semi-late" tackles happen all the time - and is part and parcel of the game. This tackle only got attention because haskell ruined crane like a little 12 year old school girl. not sure how you can say haskell was crap in this game.? him and rees were all over the leceister defence like a bad rash.haskell picks up man of the match awards for fun.

Haskell is a great player with a huge work rate, and is becoming a back row star. But in his school days he made the news not for his rugby but a 'happy slapping' at school that landed him in trouble with the police. hopefully he can focus on chanelling his energy into good rugby and avoid penalties and late tackles like this, he has plenty of potential too

you guys really are full of shit, yes it was late and i guess you could argue it was cheap but his shoulder didnt connect with cranes face, cranes face may have moved onto the shoulder but anyone with even half a brain can see cranes head bend to one side then to the other.....which if haskell had hit crane straight to the face wouldnt have happend.

Theres really no debate: that hit was very late and malicous. But you know what? it's James Haskell, rising star of English rugby and future world beater, we can't penalise him can we?! Stuart Barnes is also one of his fans and i think i sence his reluctance to be too critical of him in his comentary - cos in slow-mo, that tackle looked like a car crash!I dont know if anything had happen between Crane and Haskell prior to the tackle, and this was Haskell taking retrobution, but otherwise i'd say it was Haskells way of tellin Crane "Oy, Crane! im wearin the Eight shirt at the 2011 World Cup, so jus back off! Got it??"

i agree with you,it's not that late,but you can't say it's not for a yellow car,now can you?What i say is:1:It was late(wasn't that late,but it's late)and 2:It was high beacause Haskell's shoulder caught his neck...you can see his head bouncing back.

anyone who claims this is nothing but yobbish violence clearly hasn't played competitive rugby.i can honestly say that during a game if i see someone with the ball in front of me i will try and put as big a hit in as possible. am i a thug? no.I am myself a Wasps supporter, and this is clearly a penalty - but a cheap shot? thuggery? i think not. plus it isn't high either...crane's head moves like that because of the way haskell hit him (his head kept going when his body stopped and then went back with his body)
