De Wet Barry red card hit on Matthew Tait
The incident in question is De Wet Barry's late and hard shoulder on Matthew Tait.
The referee gave an instant red, judging that there was intent and the tackle was dangerous.
After a disciplinary hearing however, Barry has since been found not guilty and will be free to to play with immediate effect, despite the majority of pundits expecting to see a lengthy suspension.
Barry has apologised to Tait for the collision, which possibly looked worse than the intent was. Barry is a far larger man, so any type of collision between the two would end up with Tait coming off second best.
An emotive incident for many though, I won't be surprised if there's a lot of unhappy Newcastle fans out there.

Ouch... seems like a harsh hit... Totally agree with the Red card decision, but to tell the truth, I don't know why he "should" be suspended... Wasn't that bad... like scroll down & look as Haskell's... That should be suspension.

I agree, nasty hit, careless, red card descision quickly made. That is fair enough. But if there was no real intent, then its not really worthy of a suspension, and definately not a lengthy one

Nah i dont agree with the red at all. i agree it looks very nasty and in real time it looks terrible but the defenders have no obligation to move out of the way of the kicker and tait ran into him! I can see why the referee gave a red card because straight away it looks bad, but when you watch the replays De Wet doesnt step into taits way he just stands there and tait runs into his shoulder!

Would anybody of cared if the collision happened and Tait didn't go flying? I don't think so.I think it's the height of stupidity to punish based on the outcome of a collision, as apposed to intent.

Looks deliberate to me. He was obviously setting up a tackle, and when Tait kicked the ball, he tried to block it with his back (or maybe dodge it with his head, hard to tell). When that didn't happen, he leaned his shoulder into Tait's path, essentially giving him an armless coat-hangering.

Obviously he leaned into him after the ball was well gone and he had the opportunity to get out the way. Looked worse than it was but definite yellow

Looked to me like at the very least, Barry was looking to get in his way. [Granted I only have that single camera angle]One of those "old school" moves you have is to turn around to "look" for the ball, you swing your elbow out and take the running channel away from the kicker.As for no suspension...From my general experience, a red card on the pitch gets you an automatic 1-game suspension, barring mistaken identity, or other outright mistake from the referee.The whole idea is that the referee's judgement on the pitch holds. By doing this, they've set a dangerous precedent. One that cuts the legs out of red cards.If anyone has cases of red cards resulting in zero suspension -- barring mistaken identity of course -- please share with the class.Given Barry's prior record, I am truly surprised they didn't keep a 1-game on him.Then again, DeWet Barry is such a saint, they must have assumed that he went to give Tait a hug and a kiss.

Did not seem too late, and the kicker ran into him. All he did was defend himself from getting knocked over by a guy running at him.You union guys are a tad soft. This may have been a penalty in league.

I dont understand you guys, as a flanker/second row now (yeh thanks for that!!! _) but concentrating on the flanker part, i have often gone to chase a fly half as he kicks and most of them dont brace and end up flat....there are one or two who have lent into my tackle. De Wet knew he was in taits path but it didnt look as though he stepped into it after tait kicked, therefore he just braced himself.....not worthy of a red, yellow, or anything else. As rancid pointed out i doubt anything would have become of this if tait had bounced off him and kept running!

It was just an unfortunate accident...both could not control their speeds an ran into eachother...nasty hit...yes. I dont even think it's card-worthy talk less of a redd card.

How can you milk getting hammered in the face by someones shoulder?! Dumbass.I agree though, perhaps accidental, though I swear that Barry looked around to see where Tait was as he was turning to chase the kick, whether this was to aim his shoulder at him or get out his way i dont know. I agree though, should have stuck wit hthe 1-match ban a red card brings.

no.7 says it exactly right. If a guy is about to run into me, I'm going to try and be stronger at the moment of impact which means tighten up your muscles and pray he's not going too fast with his body weight. Red card due to the timing yes, it looked intentional. Slowed down, I agree that it was thrown out.

"To be honest Tait milked it"No, he didn't. He got somersaulted and smacked his head on the ground, and had to be subbed off. A quibble with the article, too - DWB is not bigger than Tait. Possibly taller, but DWB is not a large man and Tait has bulked up a hell of a lot. DWB is pretty slim and isn't a huge physical presence.

Matt Tait should harden the f*ck up and get serious! He wouldn't last 10 sec in Brisbane Rugby 3rd if he acted like a pussy and went down after that tackle. Someone give that boy a can of concrete..your a pro rugby player Tait not a schoolgirl wake up!
