Midweek Madness - Cheeky scrumhalf Rory Kockott

Midweek Madness - Cheeky scrum half Rory Kockott

Scrumhalf - one of the most vital positions on the field. As a scrum half, you're the link man between backs and forwards. You're the one calling the shots when it comes to distributing, whether it's the pop pass to a forward, a clearing kick, or a perfectly timed pass to your fly half.

There's a lot of pressure that comes with being the smallest and often most important guy on the field. So, to cope with being a few inches smaller and sometimes getting lost in the grass, scrum half's quickly develop short man syndrome. That is, they become aggressive, noisy, chirpy, and at times, punch above their weights. They have to, it's the only way to survive really.

Our young friend Rory Kockott from the Sharks is a prime example of this. Extremely talented, he's gifted with speed, strength, kicking ability and has had such a good season that he's in fact kept regular starting number nine Ruan Pienaar out the team on a few occasions.

One thing about Rory though - he is as feisty as they come. He won't stand down to anyone, and no better example of that is this clip from the game against the 'Tahs on the weekend. Kockott decided to deliberately toss the ball into big lock Dean Mumm's face, which was followed by a little push and shove.

Now, in every day life, imagine walking up to a guy that much bigger than you and tossing something into his face. It just wouldn't happen. But this is rugby, and as Kockott knows, there's guys like The Beast just around the corner waiting to bail him out of anything he can't handle.

He doesn't seem that small and most second rows are semi-retarded, you know the type awkward and slow witted. My money is on the scrum half, a few nice slaps and the second row would still be trying to work out whats going on.

I saw this live and it was pretty hilarious! Totally wrong and I bet Waratahs fans wouldn't enjoy it, but the reality is that this type of agro /attitude can sometimes get under the oppositions skin and work for you. Kinda like sledging in cricket. Anyway, didn't work for the Sharks on that day though! lol

Any high lights around of last nights Ireland V Baa Baas game. Love to see Mal O'Kelly's dummy then line break. and the Neil Best punch, later followed by his come-uppance.

I think he just took over Steve Devine's title as Super 14's Most Tw*t of a Scrumhalf.

haha my idol that guy hes brilliant! dont think hes bad just for that little incident....hes usually great. yeh beast is the sharks prop.....and hey if mumm had thrown a punch at kockott no.9s are quite efficient at stamping in the ruck "to release the ball" so big guys stay away hah

i love it, he keeps pushing and yet he's the one moving backwards each time, probably hard to look tough when the guy is way taller than you and could probably snap you like a twig.

Go Rory!....No doubt the No4 was only getting what he deserved...dont think that Rory meant for the ball to hit him in the face..but obviously the Lock had intentions on trying to intimidate Rory as he carried on running at him like that when the whistle had already gone.

I agree, scrummies have size issues, lock are quite stupid if you ask me... But I still wonder why did he do that..

Kockott was lucky Dean Mumm didnt drop him... Mumm has been known for dropping people on the field for similar antics back in his school days!

A tender right hook followed up by a flying dropkick would be nice to see from that second row
