All Blacks defeat Ireland in freezing conditions
With a chilly wind whipping through the Westpac Stadium, the conditions were worse than when they played in hail against the British and Irish Lions in Christchurch three years ago, according to All Blacks captain Richie McCaw.
"I've never really got cold out on the field but after half-time I was shivering," he said.
Ireland captain Brian O'Driscoll was still shaking, even after a hot shower, when he fronted for the post-match press conference nearly an hour after the final whistle.
In an even match, the score was tied 11-11 with 20 minutes remaining when All Blacks flyhalf Dan Carter swung the result New Zealand's way with a penalty and then a telling break that resulted in a try to Ma'a Nonu.
Carter's cut through the Irish line to set up Nonu's try was "a moment of genius", according to Ireland coach Michael Bradley as he saw an end to Irish hopes of a historic first win against New Zealand in 103 years.
All Blacks coach Graham Henry said that while pleased with the outcome of his new-look side's first outing, little could be read into the game because of the weather.

watched the match...commentators kept trying to predict things. they were praising tony buckley loads and then he knocked the ball on lol..not a great match to watch though weather made it boring

Agreed. Irish hung on nicely, but the weather was their saving grace. Pity it's only a once off. I watched with the NZ commentators, and they were pretty convinced it was a non contest - with the AB's dominating but being held back by the weather. They were probably spot on. O'Driscoll shivering afterwards was insane. Needs to up his work rate ;) *ducks*

Based on what I've seen so far in the tests, I'd expect South Africa to walk the Tri-nations unless New Zealand turn it around. I don't think I've ever see Carter play as bad as that (except for the break.)We were kind of hanging on until Horan gave away a stupid penalty. That was probably our best chance to beat the All Blacks and we blew it.Ah well, let's hope Kidney can steady the ship for the Autumn Internationals.

If I hadn't known better I would have thought Eddie O'Sullivan was still in charge of Ireland. No creativity, not much spirit, terrible line out, terrible scrum...And that was a dreadful All Blacks performance as well. I though McCaw and Kearney were the two best players out there, despite their respective teams shortcomings they both played great.

Is rugby only supposed to be played on sunny days? Someone needs to tell Graham Henry your expected to play when it rains. Looking at the Irish victory over Australia in similar conditions makes me question the selection of the pack, Neil Best is made for days like those. Maybe the Irish would do better playing in red?And the commentary! God why do they allow Barnes near a mic? Smith making the most of the overlap wasn't the crucial moment, the steal of the ball by players clearly not on their feet was. No doubt NZ deserved the win, but we can all see it so let's call it.

The marcus horan penalty was the turning point in the game. Handed the ab's the initiative and led to nonu's try. Poor performances but by both teams though. The all blacks bar mccaw were far below par, if i was to money on the tri nations you would have to say south africa. and whats happened to dan carter???

i dont think the weather was irelands "saving grace" as stated above somewhere. because in recent games ireland have been trying to play a more up tempo looser game which would have been hapered by the weather so dont know how that could be said. and as also stated above i agree best should have started as his physical presence would have dominated in conditions like those.

That the weather was Ireland's saving grace is a comment people used to make in the eighties and early nineties ! hahahaBradely hasn't had much time with the team so they're going to stay quite similar to EOS's reign. I'd say wait for Kidney to see some changes in the style of play

I think regardless of what coach was in place for the match whther it was Bradley or O'Sullivan, the one thing that should have worked was the lineout and it didnt! Couldnt believe how bad it was! Considering 7 of 8 of the pack were Heineken cup players for Munster, it was the one aspect that should have been flawless. Horan's punch was an act of stupidity, i think the guy is completely overrated in Ireland. Nonetheless AB's deserved the win. McCaw was fukin awesome, a true leader on the field.

Weather being Irelands saving grace - eluding to the fact that they were shite and were lucky NZ couldn't run the ball better because of the weather. Not sure why that's funny really, more sad than anything, if you're Irish.Is it just me, or is BOD a thing of the past? I mean, not only based on this game, but pretty much for a while now. Christian Cullen in the studio pretty much said the same thing. 'Done some nice things on the rugby field, but still to be convinced he's a great center'. Says it all really. Anyone agree, or is this going to get ugly? :P

Bod did some amazing stuff in that match on the ground and in defence although he was completely at fault for the first try....I wouldn't listen to Cullen, some (not all) SH pundits have blinkered views and limited knowledge on NH rugby. Even if Cullen played for Munster for a while.Check out some of New Zealand's tv coverage of the Lions and 2006 Irish tour on youtube they refer to all the Lions players by their numbers because they don't know who they are !

hands in a ruck ay? Look who made the tackle - Andrew Hore, who was on his feet when he rips the ball - Andrew Hore.Its a ruck when the ball is on the floor and a player from either team has joined. When Hore hits the floor it becomes a ruck, at this point NZ have the ball much to Irish disgust..read the rule book bro!

new team, no ELVs, shitty weather...i'd been happy with a 1 point All Black win on Sat... empty seats? yeah... the 32k spectators were huddled high on such a miserable night .good first hit-out. All we need now are some ELVs, hobbits, and a stadium with a roof .

I agree 100% with shaft, Bod is clearly past his best. He probably WAS the best centre in the world up 'till the lions tour, but after that injury I dont think he was ever the same. It was around the end of the 6 nations in 2007 when he started to lose it. On a downward slide ever sinse. Its all well and good that he does all this work on the ground and that, but he's a centre, not a fourth back-row. He has also lost his pace, shame really . . .Nobody to replace him with though . . . .if only Mafi hadn't played for the NZ 7's, then he'd be available :-P

Mafi would play?? No offence to the Irish, but surely a young New Zealander (which I presume he is), if he felt he was up to standard, would rather go back to New Zealand and try his chances at cracking the All Black team?I'm just throwing that out there, maybe some Kiwis on here will respond. I dunno, just seems logical to me, and if there's any kind of patriotism in his bones it would make sense. For SA, Clyde Rathbone, Dan Vickerman, Greg Rawlinson (even bloody Kevin Peterson!) - they all left SA because of political reasons. But why leave NZ to play for another country? Only thing I can think of is not being good enough for the AB's? Thoughts?

Yeah, the idiotic Marcus Horan punch was the turning point.Before that it was 11-11 with 20 minutes to go and Ireland had a penalty waiting.The penalty was reversed and Carter slotted it over as Horan went off.From here on in, bar the last 5 minutes it was all the all blacks.Ireland also lost two crucial lineouts inside the nz 22 when they had momentum.The Irish maul had been working well too.....

The All Blacks never looked like losing despite the scoreline at times. The game is played in winter and so the weather is part of the package. I thought it made the test a bit more exciting.O Gara out kicked Carter all day but can't tackle. Shame really, he should practice that.BOD wasn't to blame for first try, he was marking three men.If the Irish ever beat the All Blacks, it will be in similar conditions and they'll play a similar style. A top kicking game.

Mafi will only become available to play in 2009 IF the rules regarding 7's teams are changed. Currently, if a player has played 7's for one country, in Mafi's case New Zealand, it disqualifies him from playing with any other. There is talk of the rules being changed and Mafi has said that he would love to play for Ireland.

As most non kiwi rugby fans know - there is one team to beat and thats the AB's. Well if you ever wanted to beat them i recon now is the time. Not the most convincing display ive seen from the blacks for a long time. They def are missing their boys in Europe and now is the time to beat them - roll on Tri Nations...

tbh im irish right, and we are awful at rugby, we havent won anything in literally 30 years and even then it was the 6 nations. face it we are crap at rugby and sport generally. we are only good at hurling and gaelic football because no other country plays it.god save gerry adams

get a fuking firm grip of yourselves men. we are rated in top ten countries in the world at rugby, cricket team recently did pretty well at the world cup, up untill couple yrs ago we were in the top 20 countries out of hundreds at soccer, no we are rated in 30's, then there is boxing which has pretty good irish representation and ireland is also known as the no 1 country in the world for horse racing. but still not bad going for a country where neither of these sports is the most popular. and shamus, it is only idiots that think they are hard men and are stupid enough to think they are part of the ira or sumthing that say every battle we lost was a massacre!! sorry bit off topic there poor performance from both teams really and you cannot blame the weather. thats all part of the package. wait till the autumn internationals to see where the irish tema is goin under new coach.

Why does nobody like Conrad Smith? Ever since he started playing for the Hurricanes I thought he was All Black's material. Smith and Mcalister would of been the best centre combination, as Mcalister is a blockbuster and Smith is a distributor. Anyway, Smith really did put O'Driscoll in his place, O'Driscoll for a long time was considered the number one 13 in the world, I think we have a new contender.

are u joking the all blacks were terrible at least 6 times the ball was kicked high and the AB's back 3 it looked like none of them would call for the ball the highlight of it though was Conrad Smith's break NZ dominated ruck but don't be stupid saying weather was Ireland's saving grace thats just pathetic O'Gara has 2 sort him self out his kicking now days is terrible he cant even hit the touch line to gain yards anymore properly ever since the RWC he has hit a slump and as for the BOD being a thing of the past he hasent been scoring trys lately he has been setting them up so that is rubbish and they were prasing Buckley cause when he came on he helped in the foward pack made some difference at ruck time. if the weather was better it would have meant more running but Ritchie MaCaw said himself that it was in the foward pack a lot cause both back lines rushed each other when the other had the ball so the wings on both sides would have had more of a running game and more than likely more trys for both sides.And Kidney will add the umph to the Irish game .
