Springboks end All Black home winning streak in Dunedin
Matfield had been sent off three minutes earlier for a high tackle and New Zealand flyhalf Dan Carter kicked his sixth penalty to give the All Blacks a 28-23 lead.
However, the world champions showed tremendous willpower to fight their way back and register their first win in Dunedin at their eighth attempt and their first in New Zealand since a 13-3 triumph in Wellington in 1998.
In a fiercely contested match the Springboks snatched a 17-15 halftime lead with a 32nd-minute try by wing JP Pietersen.
The All Blacks regained the lead in the 56th minute as replacement flank Sione Lauaki stepped inside to score.
In the end, a moment of individual brilliance by Januarie settled the outcome. The gutsy scrumhalf broke from a ruck on the New Zealand 10-metre line and chipped the ball over replacement fullback Leon Macdonald, before winning the race to the ball and scoring.
Peter De Villiers, South Africa's first black coach, had been under pressure both in New Zealand and back at home after the world champions lost 19-8 in Wellington last week.
"I always believed in the players and tonight they put it together because they believed in themselves. The players worked really hard in the week before the game and, because they are the world champions, they knew they had to uplift their game."
All Blacks coach Graham Henry said the test had demonstrated the high calibre of rugby played in the Tri-nations tournament, which also features Australia.
"There are three very even sides in this competition and you couldn't get a bigger test than this one. It was a superb game, a really enjoyable spectacle and a great showcase for the game.
South Africa now travel to Australia to play the Wallabies in Perth next Saturday.

great game.first half was kindof annoying with penalties being exchanged. second half looked as thought the all blacks would pull away with it until ricky januaries brilliant try!! and the tense moment when carter was lined up for the drop goal?? what a nail biting finish :)

One hell of a game, januaries is my man of the match by far. Burger laying in some amazing hits, every bok played his heart out!!!

What a try by Ricky Januarie!! It's funny cos earlier in the match I was thinking he'd lost his pace, which he may still have, but that try was pure quality. Well done Boks. Great achievement, and makes this Tri Nations even more interesting. Matfield was immense too btw. Such domination in the air. Incredible. Btw bd, it is Enrico, but Ricky is a nickname. I like to call him legend after today though.

first win in Dunedin for Saffas ever. (8 tests since 1921)first win in New Zealand for Saffas since 1998.a lot of inexperience/bad decisions in the NZ forwards and backs.Januarie fantastic solo try and a great game. Unfortunately.oh well, can't win them all .

After a week of talk, I think its good that it stops there.Definitely one of the most exciting matches for a long time. No one expected SA to win. Great stuff.

great game, one of the best in tri nations history. im an all black fan but i think this defeat is very important for the new boys in black. they will learn a lot from this... excellent dispaly from both teams

This years tri nations is shaping up to be one heck of a competition!!! Congrats to SA the way they played was AWESOME, and i'm an All Blacks fan. They deserved that win. Can't wait for the Wallabies and SA game!!!

poor carter, whoever came up and blocked that kick in south africa made one heck of a dash looks like it was a great game, wish i could have watched it

What a game! The scoreline was probably a fair reflection (if there were too many penalties for both sides!)- two very even sides, with the Boks just having the edge!

oh, and did anyone see who made that tackle on carter, around 6:20??? Tremendous tackle for what was a vital moment in the game. Took momentum away from new zealand.

Very Chuffed to have broken the Carisbrook Hoo-Doo and thus undoubtedly silence all those once and for all who believed S.A are undeserved World Champs...Thought S.A defense blew hot and cold at times with poor first time tackle rate and Butch James for me has reached his sell by date...terrible defense and utterly abysmal kicking out of hand which should be bread and butter for #10...Ricky you BEAUTY!!!!!!Hopefully this win will build the self belief of the Boks which was desperately lacking in the 1st test.If PdV now shows more consistency in his selection and allows this team to bond I see no reason we can't win the 3N. Boks missed at least 4 opportunities to score through poor communication between ball carrier and support players and this will change once the team bonds and builds confidence...Massive defensive game from Habana and the human juggernaught Schalk "I have no respect for my mortal body" Burger...Dan "rolls royce" Carter again oozing class and his huge value with the boot and Mills "the mad man" Muliaina was a man possessed too...would love to see his ground gained stats with ball in hand... Well done BOKKE!!!Commiserations ABs...Cape town is going to be HUGE!!!

Tom, that was replacement hooker Schalk Brits. Great tackle, no replay unfortunately. Important though as you said. Intense finish to the game. What an amazing climax with Carter basically having one shot at glory, and a Bok hand preventing it - game over. Whether it was on target or not we'll never know, but he gave it a real hoof. Incredible. So exciting. The power and determination by Steyn at the very end there too... pure adrenaline rush. A classic match, one that will never be forgotten. And that try by Ricky will be remembered for all time by SA fans, in much the same way that Pieter Rossouw's brilliant try from ten years ago in Wellington is. Well done both teams. The mutual respect is clear to see.

credit to SA, they didnt even play that well but they never gave up and got their rewards - januarie pulling that piece of magic out of nowhere. what i dont get is NZ and their team selections. muliaina is a solid player, but why move him to the wing and bring on mcdonald? hes a solid player but hes not gonna set the world alight, hes hardly a stand out play maker. mcdonald is the same, a sterdy player but rarely creates anything. carter, nonu and sivi are just about the only players you could look to for anything creative, which granted arent a bad bunch but it just seems like they pick players to defend.

Incredible game! Best way to silence what was a very loud NZ press!Boks made over 200 tackles to the AB's 89... The AB's also had territorial and possession advantages! So an even more outstanding achievement by the boys in green and gold.I just hope we don't get over confident for the Aussie match, the wallabies aren't many ppl's favourites for the tri-nations, but Deans is an unbelievable coach, and if we get over confident they will punish us!

This was one of the best games Ive seen...except for the ball hanling errors by SA. And what is Joe Van Niekerk doing the squad?Anyway I just hope there will be more games like this one in the rest of the TriNations.

Van Niekerk spent the whole game on the floor. diving around. But Skalk B makes up for all the loose fowards. he is a tackling machine

springboks deserved the win however the all blacks are still the best team in the world as they can field a second string side and still slaughter major teams

its not about 2nd teams its about 1st teams and at this moment in time the springboks are the best in the world
