Wayne Barnes laying down the law to Corry & Borthwick

Wayne Barnes laying down the law to Corry & Borthwick

This amusing and impressive clip is from earlier in the Guinness Premiership season, and is basically a nice example of the referee taking complete control of matters, and speaking to two of the hardest men in rugby as if they're disobedient little children.

Barnes, who notoriously took a lot of criticism after his handling of the 2007 World Cup Quarter Final between New Zealand and France, has done well to put that behind him and move on.

In this clip he takes command brilliantly after there's a dispute over the ruling of the try, as the touch judge made an error, causing confusion all round.

Martin Corry and Steve Borthwick, Leicester and Bath captains respectively, start a shouting match about it, so we see Barnes put them in their place in no uncertain terms.

It's a great piece of officiating and a nice example of how a young ref can assert his authority in a game, making sure that he doesn't take any nonsense from anyone.

It's also really funny to see how he shuts down Corry and Borthwick, making them look like they're getting a telling off from their junior school principal.

it surely helps that he's a high referee. I would have fainted to confront such big men as the two of 'em!

What i always find soooo amazing is that these little, teeny tiny refs control dudes that are almost always bigger, meaner than your average Grizzly..lol.. but not a peep of argument from the players. They always listen to that the ref says, and if you challenge a ref (aka Burger) you get yourself in some pretty hot water...lol.But when i watch football....oh my lord its ridiculous. Anyone share my appreciation of the respect given rugby refs?

I absolutely love the respect refs get in rugby. I can't stand watching soccer anymore and I hate playing any form of sport if there are mouthy soccer players playing, just want to slap them quiet. Also gotta mention that the criticism of Barnes after that WC quarter final was mostly unfounded and came predominantly from the losing side. Barnes is top notch.

just saying that in the world cup QF Barnes wasn't at fault, the touch judge was. TJs are the ones spotting the offsides and forward passes.

It's a great example of a ref being in control and being firm, but without grandstanding.I think a certain amount of respect has to go to the captains, as I can't imagine many football captains taking it as well as that.A good day for rugby.

You got to respect the refs. It makes the game what it is. You need that control in the game to make it mean something. How many times have you played with out a ref and the game just sucked?

So what actually happened and what was the call after he reveiwed the play? Are they still touch judges because in the SH they've changed them to Sideline Referees so they have more power and can make calls on just about everything now.

That is some brilliant "refereing", laying down the law, showing who is boss.Calm, concise, and imperative. Not "buts" for those two.

Totally agree with,"What i always find soooo amazing is that these little, teeny tiny refs control dudes that are almost always bigger, meaner than your average Grizzly..lol.. but not a peep of argument from the players. They always listen to that the ref says, and if you challenge a ref (aka Burger) you get yourself in some pretty hot water...lol.But when i watch football....oh my lord its ridiculous.Anyone share my appreciation of the respect given rugby refs?"You look at the size of rugby players and compare them to footballers. Yet in football, the ponsey overpaid drama-queens walk all over the ref - not in rugby!RESPECT THE REFEREE'S! doesn't take much - Barnes is a top notch ref, good on him!

Seems like just the other day I remember him being allowed to ref the final of the middlesex sevens. He was a bit firey that day, but he has developed into a world class ref. The players respect him because he makes good choices and speaks with authority.-from an irish fan

Barnes would be a good NFL referee - no need to worry about forward passes, rucks or scrums...Simon
