Monday Mayhem - Bringing back the biff in the NRL
Theres been a lot of talk about the other code lately, with a few big name players moving across to union, striking fears that the money in Union and the salary cap in League will be the downfall of the game.
Whatever the case, theres no denying the entertainment value in a sport where, when a brawl breaks out, the commentators and crowd egg them on as if it were fight night in Vegas.
An explosive first half in Melbourne saw four players sent to the cooler for their part in incidents that for many were the highlights of the match, with the Storm easing to a 26-0 victory in the end.
As this scuffle kicked off, referee Gavin Badger virtually blew the pea out of the whistle as every player on the field joined the fray.
Rather than big men shaping up to each other, the main event was a bantamweight title fight with Billy Slater and Jason Nightingale throwing a flurry of punches.
After the match, Slater argued that his actions were sparked by being head butted three times by winger Nightingale.
"The third one, that's the one I react to," Slater said. "As he flings me across, he hits me in the head, and then he goes in again. I reacted straight away to that. The first one, I let slip."
Hes since been suspended for one game.
One of the things I found most entertaining about this incident was the reactions of the commentators, who were clearly old school and quite a far cry from what were used to in Union, where they would probably choke on their tea and biscuits.

In RL, they arent even sure if they should be sin-binned lol!Good vid!

yeah those NRL commentators are always fun :) On channel Nine on friday nights, almost every penalty for high tackles is received by the commentators with big loud "ooh come ooooooon, nothing wrong with that!"

i dont like league, i think its much less entertaining than union, but to each his own, thatsd not the point herei do like the announcers on this onei enjoy scraps in rugby, not saying its necessary, but i've been in them and everyone likes watching them, its just sort of part of the game, no real way to remove it barring executing those involved hahathe best part about this fight was that the announcers arent 130 years old complaining about every player on the field and saying how dispicable it is and how god should strike down everyone on the field, good job NRL announcers (simple solution, NRL announcers in union :D everybody wins)

Actually Mr rugby Dump, the reason you found it so entertaining is that after watching 5 tackles followed by an up and under 500,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times per match in that "sport" you call rugby league, which is essentially British bulldogs with a ball, ANYTHING is entertaining.

Gotta love Anonymous comments and their pearls of wisdom. Nice vid. Always fun to see a bit of that type of thing, and the commentators were hilarious. I liked the comment about the refs.

Australian commentary tends to be genius in this regard. I remember watching footage of an International Rules game at Croke Park a couple of years back and it was an Aussie-Irish commentary duo with a reserved old Irish chap and an excitable Aussie just like in the clip. Essentially, the Irishman was just introducing everyone as the studio had just handed over to them before the start of the game and suddenly the Aussie started screaming AND THE LADS ARE ALREADY AT IT! like some hysterical five year old seeing a school fight for the first time. Genius.

hey im an auzzie, who plays union but follows league aswellTHE THING THAT REALLY STARTED THIS FIGHT...one of the things that lead to this fight is that the dragons complained of getting arm and wrist locks (like karate/judo stuff) done on them in tackles from the melbourne storm and this stuff really hurts (i do karate too), more then tackles by fari think this is true because earlier on in the year a players arm was broken in a "Chicken Wing" tackle (which is really an arm bar tackle) by a melbourne storm player. the thing is, to do an arm bar, let alone break someones arm with one, you have to no how to do one, and there have been rumours about the melbourne storm getting training in locks to physically hurt their oppents. anyway thats my two cents

You have got to love the way the commentators are calling it " a little bit of fun for the big boys" or "its just a playaround" (or something like that). It was a full out fight!!

Ok folks i just have one question...whats wrong with a good ol throw down? I mean union could use a lil spice now and then instead of the usuall push and shove, that would be a sight especially since union players are genrally bigger...lol

it's funny how when it comes to this kind of scrap in league games and other games everybody goes hysterical, and "union should learn from that" and "there is nothing like a good old scrap" while when there is a vid featuring a french top 14 or pro d2 fight people call it a shame and dispicable and so on. Come on league fans let your voices be heard more often!OK I'm French. But it's not the point!

To the guy above, well done on pointing out French rugby.How anyone can make those snide comments about league and the like while being obvlivious to the same 'disgraceful' acts in Union, it's a joke.And the constant elitism and borderline classism from certain Union lads on RugbyDump is boring and sad, to say the least.Onto the NRL commentators. They're absolutely hilarious. You can see the worst high tackle you've ever seen, and they'll tell you that there's nothing in it and the referee needs removing from his duty.Their liberal approach to commentating is unmatched. It's nice to see Fox and Channel 9 actually having the balls to use commentators who speak their mind. You won't see such freedom in opinion listening to Sky Sports.

Who cares whether the commentators are right or wrong - they are just bloody hilarious and entertaining...we need guys like that in league. The ref can worry about the rule book - let the guys with the mic's do the MC-ing. Great Vid!

For those who say we need that kind of commentary in union, well we do in Wales and his name is Jiffy (Jonathan Davies). He usually tells it how it is. Problem is that some of the Magners league games are as entertaining as church at the best of times and this is usually reflected in his commentary. But when the game is hot and it kicks off, he adds the extra spice on the mic. I think one of his favourite sayings is along the lines of "He's laying on the wrong sides and deserves a shoeing" (right after someone's gets the taste of studs). He hates it when the ref pings the player who gave the shoeing.

Davies is funny. But you'd have to see a full NRL game to really grasp how hyped and anti-pc these Aus league commentators are

dont really understand how themes of elitism and classism has come into this, union and league have supporters from every background, its just plain ignorant to assume all union fans are rich and league fans are poor. with regards to the whole french union comparison, that gets mixed reviews, just as this does. the majority of people on here are pure rugby fans, appreciation or criticism of certain areas of the game doesnt change just because of code. RD got it spot on calling these guys old school! shame we dont get these sorts of commentators in union, although the aussie guys are pretty funny. quality entertainment, mainly from the commentators although a scraps always good to watch. to those criticising this, rugby players, no matter what code, are pretty tough guys i dont think they need the internet community looking after them!

yeah I was at that game in croke park where for the first quarter the aussies beat the bag out of the irish. not bad for my first time at croke park.
