Tommy Bowe scores a great first try for the Ospreys

Tommy Bowe scores a great first try for the Ospreys

Tommy Bowe got his new Ospreys career off to an excellent start against Cardiff in the Magners League on Tuesday night, scoring a try and contributing towards a dominant all round second half performance which saw them shooting to the top of the table, picking up a four try bonus point in the process.

Irish winger Bowe, a summer signing from Ulster, put on a great display, of which the try was not the only highlight. He regularly beat first time tacklers and looked very handy indeed.

Fullback Lee Byrne himself had a storming match, as did Shane Williams who scored within three minutes, but it was this try by Bowe that we've chosen to show you as it featured a superb bit of control, and of course, a good bounce.

Welsh flyhalf James Hook's clever cross-kick exploited the space, and Bowe improvised well to hack at it with the boot, resulting in a half-volley that popped the ball over Cardiff fullback Ben Blair. The generous bounce allowed him to collect and cross unopposed for his first Ospreys try.

Bowe realises it'll be tough going competing for places in such a strong squad, but relishes the challenge.

"The strength in depth in the Ospreys squad is phenomenal," said Bowe.
"I couldn't believe it when I joined, there were quality international players wherever I looked.

"And on the right wing it's no different as I'll have develop into a top, top player to keep out Shane (Williams) and Nikki Walker."

If his start is anything to go by, he shouldn't have too much to worry about.

Good try, all the ospreys tries were very well finished. Being a ponty boy i can't say i'm dissappointed seeing cardiff getting hammered :). Shame about the crowd though, playing games during the week is ridiculous, scrap the EDF and this wouldn't happen as the welsh sides have to squeeze their games in resulting in them sometimes playing 3 games in 7 days. They then have to rotate their squad sometimes leaving out players that the crowds come to watch. Welsh derbies are the games the welsh public want to see so they should be on the weekend like all the other games.

Great try, and he had a great game as you sayPretty sure Shane started though, not came on as a sub.My last blog post was about how lee byrne should easily be a lion, and on that performance it is hard to argue with, though planet rugby seem to have him behind tait and Murphy! If Bowe can keep performances like this up though he could well find himself off to SA as well

I think they are being a bit harsh on Ben Blair.. Thought he covered over rather well and was a bit unlucky with the bounce / volley. Don't know why commentators always have to point the finger rather than just recognise a great piece of skill!

Ospreys have three international wingers fighting for the shirts. That is strength and depth.Good to see some Magners stuff on here, should be more, the leagues getting better every year.

Only about 8500 there, not good for a derby but it was on a Tuesday, should keep them to the weekends.

Yea Ben Blair wasnt really out of position, but a good fullback would have got to that ball first. There were some other good tries which deserve to be shown from this match. I agree with rugby nick Byrne at the moment is in pole position for the Lions no.15 jersey, but there is a surprising lack of acknowledgement of this from some corners. Finally, just a small pedantic thing, the Ospreys are a region, not a club.

i disagree with him being in ploe for the 15 jersey, i think geordan murphy is the calssiest full back in britain at the moment, he never has a bad game and is exciting whenever he gets the ball, byrne has done well of late but dont think hes up to murphy standards yet,

i think tait is by far a better runner than byrne, and just as good under the high ball, allthough he has more experience at fullback than tait

i cant belive people think tait is better than byrne!!??tait has done NOTHING this yeargeordan murphy may have more experience than byrne but murphy is past his prime and lacks then pace and strength of byrnegood ospreys win!!!!! :D

great skill but it was a shame about the crowd, i was at the match and the atmosphere was great in the one stand but the other one was half empty.Lee byrne should definitely be the first choice fullback for the Lions, he has a great left boot, awsome in defence and he is a great finisher. Benji :)
