Jonny Wilkinson's good season comes to an end

Jonny Wilkinson's good season comes to an end

Poor old Wilko has done it again. After starting the season so well, he's managed to pick up yet another serious injury, this time against Gloucester last night. It was only his fourth game back since returning from a six month shoulder injury lay-off.

Wilkinson has been hampered with injury problems for what feels like his whole career. His winning drop goal in the 2003 World Cup was also the last bit of international rugby he would play for the next three years after that.

He has suffered knee, shoulder, groin, and ankle injuries, and has even had kidney problems that caused him to be out of action. This is now his third medial ligament injury to his left knee.

Despite all the suffering, he is incredibly the top Test points scorer of all time, and recently overtook Andy Goodes Guinness Premiership points scoring record. A lesser man would have thrown in the towel by now, but Wilkinson always manages to make a comeback.

"He has enormous strength of character and I am sure he will come back stronger," said Newcastle's director of rugby Steve Bates.

This season he was looking good. His goal kicking has been top notch as always and hes showed moments of that Wilkinson magic that made him at one stage the premier flyhalf in world rugby.

This latest knee injury, only six weeks before England begin their Autumn Test campaign, will be a huge disappointment for all. On form, he was sure to be included in Martin Johnsons Test squad.

Luckily for Englands sake, Danny Cipriani has announced his return after his ankle injury, and will play for Wasps tonight.

This short clip shows a bit of what Jonny has done over the past few weeks, perhaps emphasising how unfortunate this latest set-back is for the man whos worked so hard to make yet another comeback, but seems destined to spend more of his career off the field than on it.

Trash comments above.Jonny's a world class player, both as fly-half and first center. Probably the best kicker in the world, and a great tackler, for a small player. It is sad that he's injured once again. bad for the game, and not good for the premiership.England only have one player?Yeah, right...

A quality try, but place kicks and drop goals have no place in a highlight reel (unless it's a game winner).I can never remember his age and when I look it up I'm always surprised how young he is. Talk about bad luck with injuries.

Firstly England only have one player? Get a life. Wilkinson is an inspiration to all of us, not just in rugby but in life. As for those of you shouting at him to give up, I hope he comes back stronger than ever, and Im sure he will. Maybe you idiots should just give up on life, seeing as you obviously believe in quitting.

Poor Wilko...Its still hard to believe he is the highest point scorer of all time considering he'd played nearly no test rugby between the 2003-2007 world cup. Imagine if he wasn't injured as much, he'd probably be getting close to 3000 points.Hope he's alright for the November tests.

simple. No bias. No favouritism. I am a Wasps supporter, but Jonny when he is on form is awesome!! He is a different player to Cipriani, but no less dangerous. His tackling is first class, his passing is excellent and kicking is great. Have to feel sorry for such a great rugby player being injured again. Hope he gets a good chance to come back again, he deserves it!!

Never seen the mass hype behind Jonny Wilkinson. He's just any kicker to me.And to be perfectly honest, he's been average at his speciality for a while when compared to other good kickers. The mans prime ended years back, let it go.

I hope most of the comments on here are from footballers passing time. You're embarrassing yourselves.Jonny was a world class player and a top bloke. Whoever you support seeing a guy get injured isn't a good thing. I hope he manages to come back from this one. I'm not an Englang or Newcastle fan.

GUYs im a NEwcastle and an ENgland fan. I'm 15 and he is my idol lol and he is the drive of england rugby he isnt just a rugby player he is a rugby god he is a talisman for england. Whats more HE WON THE FUCKING WORLD CUP FOR US!!CIpriani got punched by JOSH LEWSEY another world cup hero so as far as im concerned GO LEWSEY AND cipriani u suk WILKINSON is the greatest and by the way that is one hell of A drop goal in the clip. The try is very well worked as well the decision to make the inside switch instead of taking a 3 vs 2 situation was genius, the saracens were drifting acros to cover the 3vs 2. It was an awesome decision. Just like Jonyy is an awesome player.

Poor bugger. The ironic thing is, the English media mocked Percy Montgomery about his hair, but their golden boy of 2003 is allowed to get away with it? Hope he recovers ahead of schedule though.

Come on, really is there any argument that Wilkinson is a good player, dont think so. what ever one has to remember is that there is a reason England are better with him, and it's the same reason any team are better with a player like him. It force's the other team to play in a different way because they know that if England get's into there half they well at least get 3 points, and if they make a mistake they will be punished for it. That makes any team hard to play against.... thats how games are won... and all you Australian's and SA can get of your high horses, you have all used kicking to win big games.. take the game between the two of you in the 1999 world cup. WOW that was exciting... or the game before when you knocked England out by drop goes.. short term memory I think, or should I say selective..

as a newcastle fan it would always be sad to see a hero of these parts go but what the fans are angry about is for a club which has stood by him since he was 17 through all the injeres WE got him back on track, for him to go to toulen was a great decsion for him but not to say a farwell on the last home match of the season was terrible all the other great players have done it to there clubs the least he could have done was to say one last goodbye even if it was just a walk around the pitch after the game, great player but had burke, flood and may breathing down his kneck
