Munster hammer Leinster in all Irish derby

Munster hammer Leinster in all Irish derby

Munster took the derby honours this past weekend as they defeated rivals Leinster 18-0 at the RDS. The win meant that reigning Magners League champions Leinster's eight match home winning streak came to end, five years to the month of their last home loss.

Munster were keen for revenge after having lost twice to Leinster last season, and not having beaten them since European success at Lansdowne Road two years ago

The all Irish clash was ironically sealed in the end with tries by a South African and a Kiwi, with Ronan OGara taking the Man of the Match honours for his all round play.

Leinsters Argentinean star Felipe Contepomi was disappointing though, as he missed three penalties early on in the game.

At 6-0 with 12 minutes left, the result could have gone either way but it was surprise hero Justin Melck who scored a splendid try that was enough to extend the lead and swing the game in Munsters favour.

A last minute Doug Howlett speciality, from a deft kick by OGara, was the nail in the coffin as Munster secured a most memorable of wins.

Super Victory for Munster. Some great talent on show. Munsters backline, so often their weak point were increadable. Earles is a great prospect. As for Leinster, still not a bad team, Elsom looked good, but O'Driscoll and Contepomi were hammered both offensively and defensivly.

Yes, great win! Munster's fitness levels really showed through at the end. Some of the Leinster players looked dead on their feet - great defence by them throughout though. One thing about the article - it wasn't Munster's first defeat of Leinster since the Heineken Cup semi in 2006 - they beat them in Thomond too later that year.

shane jennings at 7 for leinster was actually man of the match, but even a leinster stalwart like myself was embarrassed that rog didnt get it. It was a fantastic atmosphere, a record 18,500 sell-out, but unfortunately it wasnt to be leinster's evening. Very physical and committed performance by both teams. As much as it pains me to say, Munster thoroughly deserved the win.(but a hammering it wasn't!!!)

Is the dim lighting an artifact of the video, or are Irish grounds really that poorly lit?

Munster thoroughly deserved the win, but calling it a hammering is a bit extreme. Munster only scored 18, hardly a drubbing by any means. Bit of restraint in future maybe?O'Gara's kicking was great and he can definitely feel hard done by not to win the MOTM at the RDS.Connacht and Ulster, on the other hand, were hammered.

Another anonymous predictably claims a "forward pass" that isn't there .. learn the law, this might help:

18-0 in the context of this clash is a hammering in my books, nothing wrong with saying that.. unless you're a Leinster fan of course.

ElRocho, I remember the commentators at the end of the match specifically saying that ROG was man of the match though...? Or, was that just Setanta's MOTM and the official one is different? Anyone know? That little kick through for Howlett was neat. Great understanding between the two. :)

I think Jennings got the Bank of Ireland sponsored MOTM which was called out over the PA system during the game, which was ridiculous when you think of the amount of ball leinster turned over at the breakdown. RoG got the setanta MOTM which was chosen by Donal Lenihan. I thought Munster were brilliant, apart from the lineout it was the most complete performance i've seen from them since the sale match at thomond 3 years ago. Also i'm fair disappointed that munster won't have a full squad against the AB's, hopefully Deccie will do us a favour and drop a few of the lads from the Ireland squad!!

Excellent crowd Elrocho but it wasn't a record, they had the same crowd against munster last season, the record crowd for Leinster (or any other magners league game) was 2 seasons ago against ulster at lansdowne road, 48,000.Would have loved to have seen this game, but seen as i dont have setanta and it isn't shown on welsh tv then i can't see any irish or scottish derby games.

i'm a leinster fan and it was a hammering ! although the score probably didn't represent the game munster were the better team.any chance of seeing luke fitzgerald bouncing tomas o'leary from this game

poor rugby indeed. Munster should join the top 14 to face real clubs during the year.

Third centre.. possibly, but will probably be saved for tsrb or something like that I reckon. Nice charge, but not sure it'll make a great individual clip imo.

Bayonne are 2nd of the top 14 so you could have chosen a better example.

Munster Played well and deserved their victory. But no way was this a hammering. Contepomi missed 3 early kicks which could have put leinster well in the lead near the beginning of the match. His kicking was awful and cost leinster dearly.
