Friday Funnies - David Strettle's astounding rugby knowledge

Friday Funnies - David Strettle's astounding rugby knowledge

This week's Friday Funny is slightly different to the norm in that it actually comes from a tv quiz show about sport. The clip involves Harlequins and England flyer David Strettle, as well as former England scrum half Matt Dawson.

A Question of Sport features two teams of sports stars who get quizzed on not only their own sport, but other sports too. As part of the format of the show, the contestants will at one stage get something called a 'home' question, which is a question about their particular sport of profession.

It's common knowledge that it's one of the easiest questions on the show, as in theory you should know a lot about your own sport.

When it came to Strettle being asked a fairly simple and seemingly straightforward question about rugby and another flying winger, Strettle was flummoxed.

While not trying to make a complete arse of him, as on the field we think the man is fantastic to watch, we couldn't help but get a laugh out of this and thought some of you would too.

Do yourself a favour and pause the clip directly after the question is asked. Then see how long it takes you to answer. In theory you, as a rugby fan, should get it fairly quickly. We would have thought the same about Strettle though, but perhaps hampered by the pressure of pesky Dawson, he surprised us, making for some rather funny viewing.

Comedy gold, the big moment is when he has no reaction to the answer from Dawson. Poor Dave. :)

Don't think it's funny at all. This clip shows something very sad: some professional Rugby players do not follow rugby as fans. They do know about their teams (but sometimes not about the club), and their job. However, when you ask them somthing really trivial about the game and about other teams or competitions... not answer.Do you think that this english winger know who was the Barbarian's halfback in 73, in the game against the All-Blacks?

Worst of all, is having a snippy little (is there any other kind) scrumhalf like Matt Dawson to correct you. Psychologists call that "enabling behavior"; every referee that had Dawson in his ear over the years should get one free smack on Strettle for that.

"god that was one of the easiest questions I have heard about rugby before and I dont even know anything about english rugby!"This question has absolutely nothing to do with english rugby. Doug Howlett is an All Black (New Zealand) who recently moved to Munster (An Irish Club), where he won the heineken cup last year.Seems like you dont know anything about rugby FULL STOP.

well, beeing honest i thought spencer.......but just till she said munster :Dreally sad... how can you be a player, but not a fan of your sport? i tought it's like: when you're a kid, you begin to love the sport, you begin to love the clubs and thus you begin to play - correct me if i'm wrong :(

I think Strettle is a football fan, he had trials with a Premiership club. He just happens to be gifted at rugby. Werner Creef the South African 15 was said not to really like rugby but just treated it as a job

Gary October 24, 2008 5:03 pm

unlike us he probably doesn't spend as much time watching rugby as he does training and down the gym. he plays for an English club so has no need for knowledge of munster unless quins play them in the heineken cup and honestly why would an english player know who played for the aukland blues?

true he probably is too busy. Its a bit like how actors have not got the time to watch other films.

Making excuses for Strettle not knowing who DOUG HOWLETT is?? Come on. They're both wings, have played for their countries, and have both shared headline stories in the papers for the wrong reasons. You'd think he'd know. But on the point someone mentioned about players treating it as a job and not being 'fans', I totally agree. Some guys are gifted athletes and just get into it at school or wherever, and then make a success of it, while possibly not even have the same love for the game that others do. Sad, but I guess millions of people are successful in jobs they aren't really passionate for. Either that or... Strettle is just a douche who buckled under the pressure. :P

correct me if im wrong, but isnt Rua Tipoki a former blues player, who used to play on the wing but now centre because hes too slow, who now plays for munster?

good call caucau's #1 fan, i'm not sure what position he played for Auckland but he did play there as well as for the Maori and North Harbour

Good point caucau's no.1 fan......only the Blues never won the Super 12 title when he was there (99-01 and 05-06), which was one of the requirements of the question.

i heard paul sackey doesn't really like rugby. he's just good at it and does it as his job. this is poor from strettle though. it's not as though it's an obscure question about argentine front rowers from the 70s. its a contemporary international winger for god's sake

Welllet's not be harsh, players can get so caught up with their own schedule English players probably have the busiest schedule, and they just wanna have a break and switch off whenever they got the time. It's still funny XDmatt Dawson is so funny, he totally brought his on field cheekiness and back chat into TV XDBy the way, I love watching Strettle play. He's so aggressive, always wanting to attack and score.

I am English and that was pathetic and embarassing. People making excuses for Strettle should also be embarassed. I bet he knows who is on Big Brother though! The dumbing down of the UK continues.

What is more worrying than the fact that he didn't know the answer is that his reaction showed that he didn't even know who Doug Howlett was!!! Incredible ignorance considering Howlett has over 60 caps for the All Blacks between 2000 and 2007.
