Australia pushed all the way by Italy in Padova
With eight minutes to go, the twice world champions were tied 20-20 against the determined Italians, but young Cooper danced his way through the defence to score a dramatic try to put the visitors ahead.
Mat Giteau notched up 17 points while wing Lachlan Turner scored the Wallebies only other try. Captain Stirling Mortlock also got on the scoreboard with a penalty of his own.
Mirco Beramasco crossed the line for the Azzurri, while flyhalf Andrea Marcato and his replacement Luciano Orquera kicked the rest of Italys points.
Australia rested a few of their top players ahead of their upcoming clash with England, but the home side still did well to push them all the way till the last ten minutes.
"There a bit of a bitter taste because we came close," Italy flanker Mauro Bergamasco said. "We made mistakes. But we showed that we can go forward, that we can play good rugby.
"We scored a beautiful first-phase try. It's the sort of thing great teams often do against us and that we have proved we are capable of when we play at 120 percent."

that quade cooper try was sublime, a hint of obstruction with mortlock and parisse but still. . . reminicent of his try against th western force wher he steps his wallabies team mate drew mitchell

good game i think italy have improved and the dropgoal from their flyhalf was amazing . By the way,what happens in mirco bergamascos try?? GO IRELAND !!!!! Jacobo.

would like the highlights to be a bit extended if posible. 1.45 minutes doesent really sum up a game for me.thanks for putting them up though(Y)

clear obstruction on parisse by mortlock. good effort by italy though, hopefully italy will win a few matches in the coming weeks and six nations.

That was pure...dubiousness on the side of mortlock.This is not the nfl.Good effort by the Azzurris.The wallabies need to step their game up though...been tested to the limits by azzurris is not exactly in good taste for such a "strong" team.

how could Marcato have been taken high when both players were in the air competing for the ball.... just wait till SA plays you and then you will see some dubious in the air attempts.go the wallbies at twickers!

jmark .. you're right, but his tumble would only be recorded by his own camera if they cut to him exactly as he fell over and then seeing the problem immediately went back to the long shot. In the end a nice save by the TV guys.chris ash .. agreed, two players off the ground going for the ball, the ref about three metres away and only signals that it was knocked back. As the commentator says "nobody's fault". But Oz did look pretty ordinary through most of this match,

duhh of course the wallabies were pretty ordainary they hav been playing some very tuff rugby over the past few weeks and so this was like ther cool down game plus they had a bunch of new comersby the way RD could we please try to get a better video of the last try it would be much appreciated by the australian communtity

In the 56th second of the clip in the bottom left-hand corner you can see why the camera gets all messed up. It's pretty hilarious. I agree 1:45 for a match is not enough.

I would like to see more in detail that mortrock obstruction on parisse, it can be seen on the vid, but the angle is not good enough.. surely after the try the italian tv showed it at least 3 more times?

Italy is doing well under Mallett. The only side that hammered them in the 6Nations was an on fire Wales in Cardiff. The difference between the good end very good teams is that the very good teams are able to win even when they play poorly so Italy is still only a good side but they are closing in on the day in which, when everything clicks, they can beat anybody. Good luck to them and keep the momentum going!

You're all going to slaughter me for this but i think Mauro is one of the best flankers in the world. I'd even consider sticking him in my World IV. But then i think Collins is better than McCaw.

Bergamasco is quality, as is Maka, I forgot the Tonga 7's name, Parisse, Longo. You could get a hell of a black row from those teams. The obstruction on Parisse is outrageously blatant, Italy were robbed for 7 points there.Italy need a couple of big wins to get the mentality that they can do it, then they can really step up as a first tier team.

Obstruction on Cooper try, Mortlock charge on Parisse, he can't defend on Cooper, so yes it's a dramatic try.

as italian I can say that marcato wasn't absolutely tackled in air,so the first try is 100% legal.but the referee was embarassing,the wallabies played all the scrums illegaly and the obstruction was clear...go Nick,bring us to a glorious six nations!

i was at the stadium, on the line with the mortlock obstruction. it was really clear.and so was the taken high on the firts try of australia. in the replay il clear that australian player search italian for the contact.Anyway, Italy can do really good thing in the next six nations...i'll be there

andy .. maybe they play 4-aside rugby in some strange parallel universe where Collins is actually better than McCaw (I think you mean World XV) .. it's true that Collins at his best would come close but McCaw just plays at that level all the time .. so many top coaches and players regard McCaw as their first-pick flanker (or even forward), David Wallace just said "he's the best in the world". I'll go along with that.Must admit I haven't seen a lot of Bergamasco but he does look handy.

That obstruction on Parisse was the main factor Q.Cooper got through.But all in all it shows how italy have improved.Hopefully the young players coming in would learn from the more experienced and maybe italian rugby would reach the same heights of their footballing counterparts.

Robert not sure what i was thinking there, I isn't even anywhere near the X. I realise the whole world thinks he's the best player in rugby, I just happen to think differently.

Would love to see Parisse play at some higher level.Given that there are the Br & Ir Lions...Has anyone ever tried to create traction in making a "Latin Lions" sort of team?Italy & France are the logical basis. You could then make it either Romance language-based or geographically basedEuropean: Romania, Portugal, SpainSouth Am: Argentina, Uruguay, ChileI wonder how good a team like this would be. French back and Argy or Italo-Argy front rows? Hmm.

cheyanqui, that would be sweet! but given the calendar especially for players of the top 14, I don't think it's possible to add even more matches at the moment. maybe in the future. also, apart from the language these countries don't have much in common, as far as rugby is concerned, not like the lions teams have.still a great idea

I always thought that a team with Italian 1 to 8 and French 9 to 15 would be a real dream-team!
