Brian Lima knocks himself out with crunching hit - 1997
As we sort through the best clips of the past weekend, we pause to take a look back to a sickening collision from the Super 12, in approximately 1997.
It was Auckland against the Gauteng Lions (as they were known back then), and we get to see one of the hardest hitters in the games history in action.
While Samoan Brian Lima was always known for his uncompromising tackling style, there were a few blotches in his career as the killer hits sometimes drifted a little too high.
In the 2007 World Cup he famously knocked himself out when going a little too high on Andre Pretorious. Much debate always follows regarding the legality of some of the hits. Many love them, while others write them off as downright dirty.
In this clip though, all those years back, we see a fairly similar incident as a young and fearless Lima launches into Gauteng fullback Dawie Du Toit, knocking himself out cold on impact.
It was a crunching hit, with a sickening noise and unfortunate result. As we all know though, Lima recovered, going on to make quite a name for himself with his robust style of play, and more than a few spectacular hits throughout his career.

Andrew, that is a really ignorant thing to say.Lima may have had an aggresive tackling style but he was not a dirty player and therefore could not be considered a "thug".In fact as you seem to enjoy seeing people getting seriously injured it seems to imply that you, my friend, are the "thug".NB - proof of your ignorance. The expression is "every once IN a while"

Care to cite examples, anonymous.Other than the World Cup incident.It's no wonder Union is turning completely soft when physical and decent Rugby players like Lima are ostricised(sp) because of one or two errors in judgement over a career that spans over a decade.

Soft wanky comments from the poofs in the north. Seriously, the more i read the statements from NH supporters (not all of you, I know) the more sickened I become. Union is tough, Lima's a legend of the game. He was often late and high, but never with intent and he paid for it many times by either hurting himself or getting suspended. But when he timed it right it was awesome to watch. You fairies would take out all tough tackling and just watch a game of touch if you had your way. And of course I enjoy watching people get battered, or I wouldn't follow rugby, by the way.

Lima has no technique in his tackles, he just looks for cheap shots on vunerable ribs.Anyone can smash a player if the tackle is dirty and blind to the reciever.

It's nice to see him pay a little for high tackling. If he tackled within the rules this wouldn't happen.

He's retired anyway. Not just anyone can do what he did, that's bullcrap.He was often high, but he got suspended when he was. More often he was just a devestating tackler, and he will always be remembered as one of the scariest tacklers around. And there is nothing wrong with busting a few ribs with a solid hit. This isn't soccer, smashing other players is fundamental to the game.

Well i think Brian Lima is one of the great names in rugby, yeah sure he sometimes mis-timed tackles(who doesn't??)but he was never the biggest guy out there so made up for that with sheer commitment and determination. I'm sure all the doubters would have loved a 'lima' in their team (if any of them actually play the game!!)

Amazing tackler, one of the best in the game, being able to intimidate larger players with his individual technique (even if a little late and high). Hes global admired, not just southern hemisphere, all can appreciate him, I'm from the north. It's what rugby is about, I only wish I could tackle like that.

is lima actually any good?i mean, i know he makes some huge tackles like the ones in help for heroes match and the one on hougard, as well as the few through the world cup, but he seems like most of his tackles are illegal, or he gets mashed doing them.....i dont think i've seen any great play from him...

im not sure, i could be wrong, but i think when a lot of people are complaining about lima being high etc they arent really referring to this, yes this was a tackle that was high on the body but not a "high tackle" in the penalty sense, but lima always went high, and yes there is nothing wrong with huge hits, but at the end of the day, if you hit someone high or even tackle someone anywhere and you end up getting carded or injured then its really not worth it is it!

Well, exactly. When he went high he got injured or suspended. Most of the time though, we wasn't high and he smashed alot of players legally. That's why he was respected.

Who knows? I saw him mainly for Samoa, and they have never been great at the breakdown, so they rarely won any turnover ball, whether they smashed a guy or not.But he was an awesome defender, could carry the ball alright and played without fear and with alot of heart.He was a unique player.
