Super 12 highlights 1996 - 1998
This week well be taking a look back at some previous seasons of arguably one of the best domestic competitions around.
With the rise of professionalism, the inaugural Super 12 tournament kicked off back in 1996, with the final being contested by the Auckland Blues and the Natal Sharks. Auckland dominated for a few years, with players such as big Joeli Vidiri and Jonah Lomu featuring prominently.
The Blues, with a young Carlos Spencer leading the way, won again in 1997 before they were outdone in 1998, with the emergence of what would be the most successful team in Super Rugby history the Crusaders.
This clip shows tries from some of the top teams throughout those three seasons and will bring back some great memories for those who watched the matches and players at the time. Its also a collection that gives great insight for those whove never seen Super 12 footage from the era.

James, what's your deal, mate? Why are you always trying to stir something up by knocking the other hemisphere? Let it be.A large number of these tries also came from problems with defense (holes on the line, not spreading enough and leading to overloads for the offense, or committing too many to a tackle).Why not just enjoy a great try for what it is? And these were all pretty great tries.

I wrote the long one about james with the swear words in it but i didnt do any of the ones about the bush fires guys and for the swearing i totally apologise, well out of line, think i got a bit too passionate but that guy gets on my nerves, im registering now and will decloak myself. Im an Irish Rugby Fanatic and i use the name Kenny. Again apologies to all about the swearing , but it was not me with the bush fire jokes.

Only time will tell, Ireland sacked gatland and got to 4th in the world after with an Irish coach, The welsh won the grand slam in 2005 with a welsh coach so i dont think that your theory adds up. Wait till the end of the tournament of Gatland is still the grand slam/ 6 nation champ then yeah maybe but untill then it all just talk.

look im being diplomatic and carefull here, i havent been slagging SH rugby its pretty feckin cool but its the fact that all i hear is that NH rugby is crap when it really competes well at the big tournaments. If SH Rugby fans werent so arrogant about the whole thing then maybe this wouldnt keep popping up in every post. It a big vicous circle.I have to say though that kember does, in my opinion, speak the truth on the world cup and by the sounds of it, touched a raw nerve with you aussierugbyfan, I guess sometimes the truth hurts, doesnt it.

You started with the autumn internationals and i pointed out that the they have lost to NH hemisphere teams in the previous WCs. I only pointed this out because you said SH is way better than NH.Again ill say it as i had began by being diplomatic but as i am an "idiot" ill spell it out.AUSTRALIA LOST TO NH TEAMS IN THE LAST 2 WORLD CUPS AND IN THE AUTUMN SO QUIT WITH THE SH BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE BS CAUSE HISTORY AND PREVIOUS RESULTS ARGUES AGAINST YOU "MAAAAAAAAATE" struth!!

Kenny mate, you're Irish... apart from Munster, you guys don't have much to cheer. The Australians are clearly a work in progress, so the Aussie is hardly saying anything revolutionary. And I think you left out their win over England in your analysis... The SH teams are rated by commentators and officially ranked higher than the north teams right now. Might all be different again in 2011. Chill out Paddy.

Yes Fontane we mite not have much to cheer about except Munster being european champs 2 out of the last 3 years, I am calm about all of this. The Irish have one of the youngest squads in the world and a new coach who has brought success wherever he goes. So we are also a work in progress and i think we beat the french in quite a wondeful way on saturday , which shows that maybe the future could be bright for us. Fontane Argentina are 4th and we beat them in autumn so rankings dont count 4 much. England are 5th and they r shit so please dont bring up rankings either they dont tell the true story, results do.

South Africa and new Zealand all had great November tours to the northern hemisphere but the aussies looked crap, hate to be bearer of bad news, you beat england easily but like i said england are quite weak and clueless at the moment but you nearly lost to Italy and France and got bashed around by wales. i really dont care about world cups but if you wanna hum and haw about your recent form, its been raged and patchy to say the least for such a "strong" team.

Yep and they lost to the kiwis but they were very close and played out a great game, plus the kiwis are a class act who beat just about everybody in every game. But the point is the aussies form has been shit of late. So less of the arrogance from the guys down under cause its unnecessary, and frankly yous dont have a laeg to stand on.

Oh for heaven's sake.Look the SH sides play some great rugby. So do the NH sides. Sometimes SH rugby isn't entertaining. Sometimes NH rugby isn't either.All this 'my team's better than your team' stuff is just so playground. It's like we all make ourselves feel better by associating ourselves with the team from our country, "my team beat your team therefore I am better than you". I have been as guilty of it as anyone else but I think it has to stop. The debates on the bottom of these clips used to be interesting, they used to be about RUGBY not pointless one-up-manship. Let's leave all that stuff to adolescent YouTube users eh lads, and celebrate the game that we all have in common. Please?

Some nice memories from the early days of Super Rugby.Natal with Honiball and Joubert. Honiball brought physicality to the #10 rarely seen before him. Joubert's positional play made a fat, slow forward like me admire what backs could actually do. When an opponent kicked to the back of Natal, Joubert almost always seemed to be right under the ball.Also wonderful to see the highlight reel of Lomu and Vidiri. Shame that both had career ending kidney issues.Plus any video showing Zinzan Brooke gets a thumbs up too.On a side note, any insights as to why there is such a prevalence of kidney disease amongst Polynesians? Is it genetic, or diet-related? I once heard rumors that Lomu juiced. But after seeing hard news stories about overall kidney disease in many island nations, I don't buy the 'roids explanation very much.

can i just say, Lomu will never be suprassed as both a rugby player or a sportsman: he is a man before his time who is the reason people like Vainakolo,Sailor and Banahan are allowed to play on the wing instead of being forced into the back row due to their size.Glad i got that off my chest!

Brazil and Argentina have won the football World Cup more than England too. Still doesn't stop them being third world countries with sucky domestic leagues where the players are paid in Monopoly money (hence their moves abroad to real countries).The SH should be ahead of the NH, rugby is a borederline minority sport in the NH (more people play handball in France). It would be like comparing the NZ, SA and Oz football leagues... and national sides. Then we really are in joke territory. A league anyone?

It really is annoying.And for your information pal, rugby isn't the no. 1 sport in Oz either, it's about third after Ozzy Rules and Rugby League. Besides which we (and I'm talking England here) have the largest player base and the richest union so we really don't have any excuses when the SH sides beat us. They're just better than us at the moment, that's the bottom line.
