Midweek Madness - The Ebersohn Tumble
This years tournament produced a whole host of surprising results, which is in essence one of the best things about Sevens rugby everyone has a chance of pulling off an upset on the day.
In this particular match it was home team the USA who took it to the Springbok sevens side in the hope of impressing the local fans.
They did just that, as they led the match for some time, giving the Bok side a real scare before the experienced visitors won 15-14 in a close and exciting match.
This comical moment happened shortly after kickoff though, as young Bok flyer and Grey Bloem high school sensation Robert Ebersohn showed us an example of his athleticism after being ankle tapped from behind.
Ebersohn, who made his Currie Cup debut last year at the age of 19, is a sure thing for higher honours in the upcoming years. Along with his twin brother, Sias, the two of them made a huge impact at high school level, with Robert since having made the step up, featuring strongly on the Sevens scene.
Remember the name, as youll hear it a lot more in the future, preferably for quality rugby action though, not amusing forward rolls during play.

not only hilarious but a great way to recover from the good tap-tackle kept his momentum but mostly just hilarious makes you love rugby even more

Ebersohn is our best outside centre!! great to see him in the sevens, but we could use him in the super14 (cheetahs!!!)..great player!!(he has a little brother who's got some talent as well)

In yet another case of Tier 1 vs Tier 2 bias, the USA player was referred to the citing committee for failing to bring the player down safely after putting him beyond horizontal.Just kidding. hilarious video. In the USA we didn't get to see the first two pool rounds on TV, so this is my first watch

No question at all that the USA got screwed in their semifinal with Argentina - Argentina's restart kick went out on the full, which should have led to a USA free kick on the half way line. Instead the ref/TJ looked at each other for a solid 10 seconds before the hooter went, then the ref ended the match. I was sitting about 30m away, and it was clear as day when they showed it on the replay screen.See here for another comment on the incident by someone else who was also close by:http://pelicanrefs.blogspot.com/2009/02/i-heart-rugby.htmlArgentina went on to win the tournament, defeating England 19-14 in the final. kept the momentum and got the pass away ... sweet...Kenya... what a rise from these dudes... beat SA in Wellington, beat NZ in San Diego...got fitness + they're probably averaging 2m tall

i agree, mate. I watched the New Zealand v Kenya match, and the Kenyans have really stepped up their game--enough, apparently, to beat last year's most dominant team.I just remember watching the Kenyans last year: pathetic, bad passes, missing tackles...this year, though, i couldn't count how many times new zealand would seemingly break the kenyan line, and then a kenyan would track him down within a few metres and drag em to the ground

I saw most of the third round of pool play, and almost all of Sunday, and for my money, KEN v NZL in pool play was the most exciting match of the tournament.KEN is easily the #2 crowd at the tournament, behind the USA. The fans are to 7s what Brazilians are to soccer.Was great to hear them going nuts for them.Also, wonderful to see that Kiwi throw that cheap shot at the end. It led to the final Kenyan try which gave Kenya the TB in the pool.Not that I hate the kiwis, just that I love not only to see underdogs win, but to see them get under the skin of their opposition... and for the referees to call cheap play both ways (and not just against the minnow).

QuestionAre ankle taps technically illegal?Witnessed a referee call a penalty for one a few years back, and am still confused?Obviously as a practical matter they're not, save the one stickler, but I've yet to find in the rules any actual text which prohibits ankle taps. Maybe from a tripping or not-wrapping rule? Any refs out there care to explain?

Anonymous, I think that's an good question. I always want to know how referees make decisions on things not explicitly stated in the law book.But like Chris G pointed out, certain jurisdictions may explicitly state things - like prohibiting ankle taps - in their own law variations. I guess it's usually for junior levels where they don't want the kids getting hurt.A search on google came up with this:http://www.epru.org/pdf/09u15law-variations.pdfFor the Eastern Pennsylvania RU U-15 teams, ankle taps are against the laws and result in a penalty. I guess that's just how it is some places.

LOL, my friend used to do that when he played, but he kept getting pinged for it because it was dangerous - showing studs or something. Eventually he decided to stop doing it when he caught some guy in the face with his heel, there was blood everywhere - was pretty foul

Last year a similar play happened in my club match. our full back received a kick stumbled flipped and proceeded to burn a few guys en route to a 50 meter run back. our team was stunned we didnt know to make fun of him for tripping or praise him for the recovery and runback
