Super 14 Pick of the Week - Round 1

Super 14 Pick of the Week - Round 1

The 2009 Super 14 got underway this past weekend with matches in Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. With much anticipation for this years tournament, the first round produced some exciting encounters.

Weve picked a few of the better tries from the busy rugby weekends action to share with you here.

As the tournament progresses were sure to see plenty of quality action coming from the top domestic tournament in the Southern Hemisphere.

In the clip youll see a fantastic team try from the Lions against the Cheetahs, two excellent solo efforts from Daniel Bowden and Digby Ioane, and a few others that we felt were worth showing. Enjoy.

I'm biased, since I'm a back, but I love seeing tries that begin from chip-and-chases or cross-field kicks. It something that seems like it's a little more commonplace in League than in Union, though.Anyways, great stuff!

haha.. sad Super 14 that produces some of the best players and most dominant teams in the world.. riiiight buddeh. And about the stadiums - they look empty cos they're massive in most parts, compared to the wee grounds in the UK, which I presume is where mr anonymous is from. Bath capacity is 13 000 and is packed every week. Ellis Park is 52 000 or so, and has 20 000 for most Lions games. You do the math. Just sayin.. If the defence is so good where you come from, shouldn't all matches be 0-0 then? Sounds exciting. Ignorance is bliss. enjoy all rugby ffs...

Sad to say you're wrong "neutral". The attendances in all but the SA games are lousy.New Zealands attendances declined last season overall, let alone just this opening weekend. New Zealand dominate Super 14 (10 wins from 13 seasons) and yet still fans can't turn up for games. As for competition, out of the 13 seasons it's been active, the Crusaders have won it 7 times, over 50%, hardly competative.

The crowds are healthy enough, games never attract less than 10,000 spectators, usually it's about 20,000.That's pretty damn good, very few leagues in the world can claim that, the GP certainly can't.The players are far better than the plodding players up north. The play is far better, producing better players, producing better national teams, which regularly rape thier NH counterparts. The only thing that has raised the standard of NH rugby is the ridiculously massive influx of players from the S14 into your competitions. Take them away and your leagues look a whole lot shitter. You NH tyoes are hypocrties alaso. Take Butch James as a random example. Suddenly, because he dominates in the GP, he is a great player. The fact that he toiled away in S14 for years without ever being one of the best five eights in the competiton (arguably) doesn't register at all in your pea sized brains. He learned everything he knows in S14, and I'd wager he's a worse player now he has left. The defence is streets ahead of you blokes in the north, that's why you lot struggle to score tries against us. The offence is ahead too.Take that Waratahs try, the play got switched to the right winger, dragging the defenders right, he moved infield to the left, dragging them back in, before offloading to Horne (a gun young player with loads of pace) who read the defence drifting infield and went back to the right and into the corner. Some of those defenders you accuse of being shit are All Blacks. Funny that Rob Horne can get around them but the best players from up north get smashed by them.Maybe, 'shock horror', players down south run better angles, read the defence better and are better at busting tackles.Maybe that's why we dominate you internationally, cuz we are better at what we do.Maybe marching up and down mud soaked pitches, keeping the ball in tight is old fashioned rugby that went out with the dodo and only works when you have a sympathetic ref behind you.Maybe you lot should try passing running and executing better, instead of just stolidly hitting it up the middle, ball after ball.As an All Black once said "You lot invented rugby, but we taught you how to play it".

i think "anonymous" has summed it up pretty wellthe truth is S14 breeds better players - is it the coaching ? Is it the players ? Is it the fresh air ?you can not ignore the fact that SH is the dominant hemisphere - the international teams are picked from S14 teams - so while some of u might say S14 is crap - you are all deludedfor the "anonymous" who said shit defences - if S14 defence is so bad ( remember international teams are picked from these teams ) y do NH nations struggle to score tries against SH teams ??Oh thats right - cos ur offence is shit and so is ur defenceu might remember not a single try scored against AB's in last years grand slam ??? AB v England 32 - 6 ( 2 penalties right ?)AB v Wales 29-9 ( 3 penalties right ?)AB v Ireland 22-3 ( 1 penalty right ? )AB v Scotland 32-6 ( 2 penalites right ? Rob Horne achieved what all of the precious home nations couldnt do - he scored a try by running around some AB's - and the kid is 19 in his 2nd year of S14your comment says more about your knowledge than anything else but for your rugby teams - it shows how great their defence is ( clearly) as well as highlighting the fact that your offence is equally as woefulits not a personal slight against any of you - but if you wish to talk intelligently then at least think before opening your mouth

Without them you'd be laughably crap. You lot play for penalties, without a pedantic ref, you'd have nothing. You're about five or ten years behind us tactically, still playing posession rugby, like it's the '99 world cup. You've no idea.

You weiners (Northern and Southern) get so bent out of shape, it's ridiculous.Although all this bickering brings up an interesting idea - a Munster v Crusaders match. That would be great! Someone get on the line with the managers of those teams and get this fixed up. RD, you got those kind of powers???If you guys weren't so blatantly biased and quick to name-call, your points might hold some water. It IS a fact is that the SH teams ran a muck against NH teams in the Autumn internationals. It is NOT a fact that "all the best players" in the NH teams are S14 players. Just one example would be Shane Williams. I'm not comparing him to Habana or Ioane or any other SH winger, but he is one of Ospreys/Wales star players, IRB player of the year, and is not from the S14...the guys that get picked for the Lions tours are usually the best/star players of their respective teams...and they're not S14 players.

"aussierugbyfan said...can you guys choose names instead of anonymous ?Munsters star performers are kiwis - you cant deny that mate - its not objective"Well, you're right, it's not objective. It's certainly subjective. The Munster crowd get a kick out of Tipoki and Howlett and have embraced them very well - along with Manning and Warwick - but I would argue that the stars of the team are those that represent the Ireland national team: O'Gara, Flannery, Hayes, Horan, O'Connell, O'Callaghan, Quinlan, O'Leary, Stringer...Jesus, the list goes on, man...the whole team is made up of stars. But that's the sort of thing that happens in a country where your pool of clubs is limited to 4 teams - Wales and Scotland have a similar situation, too.

I know, jamestheconvict, that's my point.I don't think you can compare individuals like Shane Williams to their SH counterparts on S14 teams...there's just so much that goes into how well they play, including everyone else on the team around them. Toulon, despite hiring on big name - and very talented - players and spending tons of money, are struggling to stay in the French Top 14.As far as crowd numbers go...I'm guessing the NH must have more numbers, since they somehow seem to have more money. That, or they just charge an arm and a leg per ticket....

jamestheconvict talks sooo much shit, he's getting a bit of a reputation. How can you take into account crappy NRL, it's not quite the same as what the NH has to deal with in terms of competition to attract fans. The UK (and France/Italy) has to deal with the domination of football, Aus, NZ and SA have nothing on that scale. Third diviosn sides attracting 20,000 a week, top teams packing out 78,000 a week and waiting lists for season tickets and yet the Top 14 and Guiness Premiership still generates more revenue (and heavier investment) than the Super 14.How can you say quality of rugby doesn't affect attendances, in a country dominated by rugby (where else has a "Rugby Channel), people will pay to see games. Take into accoutn the distance between countries, how can you have atmosphere and competition where away fans can't even make it to games. It's retarded, each SH country should concentrate on their own league and have a cup competition similar to rugbys greatest club tournament (the Heineken cup).

I wouldn't say the defense is 'crap'. Offensively, the SH international teams proved better - this past autumn at least. But from what I saw, the defense wasn't much different on either side...I know this isn't 100% of what makes a good defense, but a large of it is just being there, keeping your line flat, staying spread out, and wrapping your arms up to make the tackle. Sometimes, things go wrong. But that happens to any team.

I don't know, I can just say the offense is better. An example is the Ireland v Italy match, where Italy didn't play horribly, especially defense-wise, but Ireland just capitalized on two try-scoring opportunities at the end and made it 38-9.But Italy was able to hold them at bay pretty much the whole time defensively, it was just that the offense was better for Ireland.I know that's not always the case, but sometimes it is.

There's only 4 million people in NZ, there's only 20 million in Aus and rugby competes with Leageu, AFL (one of the highest attended profesional sports leageus in the world) and soccer now with the A-League. That's why crowds aren't great. But who cares, the rugby's better. The T14's crowds are amazing, but the S14 still tops every other league in Europe for crowds. The reason there is more money in European rugby is simple common sense. There's more money in Europe, nothing more. Larger populations, bigger economies etc. It's actualy amazing how much better Aus, NZ and SA are considering the disparity in financial resources.Still, we manage to play better and produce better players.

During the autumn internationals England had a new coach and were trying to find a rugby identity, as were Ireland. Wales played badly and still beat Australia and came close to beating South Africa. Even Italy, the whipping boys of the Six Nations ran Australia close, so I think that, although there is no denying that the SH have been the better hemisphere in recent times, there dominance is being exaggerated, particularly by this 'convict' guy

I find it rather odd that all these New Zealand fans bleat on about the level of their rugby, yet have done nothing in a World Cup for how long? Aside from being the perennial bottlers of the international game, what else have you got to show for it? Wow, you stuff the NH in between World Cups and then despite putting immeasurable points on them pre-tournament, complain that you are knocked out by a refereeing decision? Do behave! If you were that good you'd have had beaten every side comfortably: not moaning about a forward pass. This isn't even with me delving into the SHELV's, (Southern Hemispheres ELVs for those not too quick on the uptake). You enact a set of rules under the guise of making the game more enjoyable which have the entirely opposite effect and monopolise the state of the international game for years to come. If that is entertainment, then so be it. For a game looking to expand internationally and become an Olympic sport marginalising the competitiveness of the international game is hardly the way forward.

THe funniest thing is this was a highlights video that is now a mass debate!! Couple of things I'd like to say =DA: Rugby is the main sport in New Zealand, no two ways about it, so obviously ur gunna produce better players than the NH nations competing with football, GAA and cricket (in sorry England's case).B: All of ur examples of Sh superiorty ws the AB'sAB v England 32 - 6 ( 2 penalties right ?)AB v Wales 29-9 ( 3 penalties right ?)AB v Ireland 22-3 ( 1 penalty right ? )AB v Scotland 32-6 ( 2 penalites right ? While during the Autunm Series Italy nearly beat Australia and Scotland nearly did a job on South Africa, so it's not complete dominance.C: I'm Irish and somebodys gunna look this up and make a fool of me but im fairly sure Irelands population is at best 5 million :)D: Howlett, Mafi, Tipoki, Munster's stars?!?! They are part of the Munster Machine, not it's main parts. Paul O'Connell would be the best 2nd row in the S14 if he went there, no arguements.E: Just randomly, watched the Reds vs. Stormers, Quade Cooper looks a bit special!! Also the Stormers 5 ws great, saw him get a try but missed his name.F: jamestheconvict, don't go on a big rant at me, but fuck me ur stubborn!!!!And finally, people leaving Anonymous, it takes two seconds to add a name and is farrrrrrrrrr less irritating.Phew, got that out of my system...

Best game for me has to be Reds and Sharks (today i mean) last week hands down, Cheetahs and Lions! Great pace and funny seeing Morgan Freeman there. Im guessing hes getting some tips for his upcoming movie with Clint Eastwood!

"Well this is for all u southern hemisphere Cunts who come on NH videos spouting shit bout how u lot are so much better than us....Fact is MUNSTER would make a show of every super14 team... Deal with it ha... Enjoy urself tryin to argue ur way out... Cause all ur really sayin is Blah,Blah,Blah,SHIT,Blah,Blah,Blah."Just like to point out...you could of been the bigger man and just ignored what some of the SH fans were saying. But you had to come in here and make it 10 times worse! I like NH rugby but I LOVE SH rugby! They're both good at what they do but im not act like a 5 year old because someone else hurt my feelings. Just enjoy the games lifes too short to be bickering about the sport we ALL LOVE!!Ok. Great start to the season for super 14! Just finished watching the hurricanes and highlanders replay. Don't understand why hurricanes are playing the way they are even though they won! This week was alright for me! Very much looking forward to the Crusaders and Brumbies game WOOHOO, i feel like a little school kid! That'll be a cracker (hopefully)

I wonder if NH people really believe players like howlett or butch james suddenly became good players when they got to the NH?These guys were devloped thru the S14 system and it was their form in the S14 that earned them their international careers.Obviously it must be a great league to produce the world's three best international teams. That would be obvious to anyone with a brain.

I apologise for my earlier comments, I'm suffering from small country syndrome which makes me talk drivel due to my pauper status. No World Cup for us since 1987 and no final since 1995. At least we have our dance and our 10,000 average attendance at our Super 14 games. :(

"The Waratahs held on for a scrappy 11-7 win against the Chiefs at the Sydney Football Ground, in what was a very forgetful Super 14 encounter on Friday. Many expected this clash to be a free flowing, high tempo affair between the two trans-Tasman rivals. Instead, the locals were forced to watch a stop-start error-filled display that failed to reach any heights from an entertainment point of view."Looking at the first game of 2009 Super 14 the Highlanders vs the Brumbies you are greeted with an almost empty stadium with no atmosphere. In fact the loudest noise of the night was the noise during the minutes silence for the bushfire victims. The next game between the Blues and the Force again a half empty stadium for the first game of the season with no atmosphere.

Sanzar own the world, u made quite a tool of urself there. If ur gunna join a debate get ur fucking facts straight buddy!!'half your fucking team are recruited from the super 14' WRONG12 is Mafi, 13 is Tipoki, who is actually just recovering from a bad knee injury, and 14 is Dougie H. Thats 3 people, not half a team.I never said NH ws better but u make it sound like we just came out of a cave and started playing the game, lighten up and stop being so up your own arse!!Superman wears Paul O'Connell pyjamas.

THE TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!! February 21, 2009 11:51 pm

as a northern hemisphere person i admit your comps are superior but we still enjoy ours. and its great when we can recruit one of your guys cause they have such a huge impact on our comp. All my colleagues are ignorant because they forget that all our teams got raped by sanzar at the end of there season when they were out of form but still the boks got good for england and aus was allright and do remember robbie deans and peter de villiers are both newSuperman wears Paul O'Connell pyjamas because its a discuise cause they know he wouldnt be such a loser in life. P.S. Mortlock would own brian o driscoll so would jean de villiers..ah thats a nail in the coffin. And our cipriani sucksI think its time that we admit that we are inferior and enjoy what little we have.cheers!NORTHERN HEMISPHERE FOR LIFE

How good was that game between Brumbies and Crusaders! Well not really great, a lot of turnover balls, but that to me was due to the damn pressure each team had on each other! Hope the Hurricanes can sort their crap out and play some decent rugby (i shouldn't be complaining cause the seasons only just started so heres hoping). Anywho great rivalry from Brumbies and Crusaders and great atmosphere too.

Im from the SH, and i reckon NH rugby is about level with us, they have some World Class players. Namely the 2 Irish boys Paul O'Conell and Brian O'Driscoll... I still think McCaw is the best tho lol

Paul O'connel is special but in a 'special class for the developmentally challenged' way.My nana is a better rugby player, and could have captained Ireland if she wasn't too disgusted by the idea.
