Mathieu Bastareaud try after great step by Mark Gasnier

Mathieu Bastareaud try after great step by Mark Gasnier

There was plenty of focus on the much anticipated Tana Umaga return on Friday night, but it was overshadowed slightly by a 22-13 win for Stade Francais over Umagas Toulon.

Toulon scored two tries to Stades solo effort, but it was Lionel Beauxis who kept them in front.

When the Parisians did score, it was a great try that involved a former Rugby League star and a young, up-and-coming Frenchman.

Mark Gasnier, who is looking more and more comfortable in Union every time he plays, made this great break with a fantastic step that left Sonny Bill Williams and Tana Umaga in his dust.

It was the tank-like twenty year old Mathieu Bastareaud, the cousin of Arsenal footballer William Gallas, who then collected the return pass and powered over the line.

Bastareaud was a standout player in the IRB Junior World Championship, and has since been impressive with Stade Francais, earning him a crack at Wales this weekend in the Six Nations.

French coach Mark Lievremont is giving him a chance to prove himself after his recent good form.

"We had to choose between Mathieu Bastareaud and Damien Traille, but Traille is ill and only played an hour while Florian Fritz is still suspended," Lievremont said.

"Mathieu has the profile to come into this team and bring his determination and power. He has played well for Stade Francais".

France play Wales this Friday night, causing somewhat of a stir with the traditionalists. It promises to be a cracking game though in which young powerhouse Bastareaud will be giving his all.

Bastareaud is the size of most American Football running backs. He's certainly not fat, and for someone who weighs 241 pounds he can move.(he'll be a prop by age 25)

Beniot baby at fly half is great news for wales, hes not a big guy with little fly half experience. Big Jamie Roberts is gonna give him a tough game.Should still be a great match though!!

He should be Inside centre, rather than Outside. Great crash-ball player, but not a good distributor.

nice showcase of talent there - first the agility and speed off the change of direction from Gaz, then great support, angle, and pure strength by Bastareaud to drag/ shrug off defenders to the line.I am beginning to like the SF team more and more - need to buy me a pink jersey.

SF does grow on one. Anyone Notice SBW kinda watching, he gets stepped than puts in a half ass tackle Bastareaud.

Gasnier is a very skilled player, there's absolutley no shame in being stepped by him, the very best players in rugby league have been beaten by him. He's got everything a great player needs, pace, alot of strength, amazing footwork, great passing and offloading ability, and a great football brain. He's just starting to come good, he's gonna make an excellent wallaby.

In regards to SBW, he looks lost out there. It's the coaching. Gasnier is with a strong team with good players around him a very good coach, who has brought thru rugby league players before (Tuqiri and Mckenzie had a long history and it could be said that Mckenzie was the main one responsible for teaching Tuqiri the game) and a generally good training structure and environment.SBW, stranded at one of the worst teams in France, with a novice coach and a substandard structure is clearly struggling to adapt and come to terms with the game. He should have gone to a better club with better coaches, preferably a coach with a history of bringing thru league players. In fact, SF would be a good fit for him. He's got everything needed to be a good player, strength, speed, agility, ball playing skills, great footwork.

Bastareaud is a 13 agreed with anonymous post perfectly - in regard to SBW - in regards to Ewen Mackenzie at SF - i think there is a lot in what you saySBW at Stade Francais - now that is a great idea

aussierugbyfan February 26, 2009 9:20 am

SBW couldnt get to the SF 13 cos the guy between them was too small to tackle high effectively - which is what he tried to do instead of round the bootlaces.SBW's shoulder would have looked better with the first tackler already pullin the man down

lol Anonymous at February 26, 2009 9:44 AM... About SBW... You makes me laugh but about Toulon... You're a noob. Toulon play bad this season not because it's a bad team, but only because they ain't got no 10. None of their flyhalves can find a lineout or kick a penalty. If they had only a 60% kicker, Toulon should be 7 or 8 on thechampionship board. You should know what you're talking about.

Arnaud February 26, 2009 1:54 pm

Problem of Toulon is not flyhalf or kicker. It's Boudjellal. This cock thought he could play the title this year by building a team and make them train 2 month together. What a big mistake.Of course he bringd the money. But less he can be seen the best Toulon's kicker would made the job perhaps.

Toulon have money and good players, but that doesn't make a great team. They are trying to fasttrack their way to being a top side, and they are on their way but not their yet.Umanga is a completely novice coach, it was foolish to expect him to be good straight away. For a guy like SBW, who's completely new to the game and was always going to struggle to adapt to a team like toulon with instability, a new coach and a rapidly developing but ultimatley undeveloped training structure, this is a bad situation to be in.He needed to go a long established, top side, with an experienced coach, preferably one who has brought thru rugby league players before, so he could be eased into the game and taught all the small things that he's lacking.I miantain that a side like SF would be ideal for him, whereas Toulon is far to unstable an environment for him to succeed in.

Le french guy February 26, 2009 9:59 pm

To all those who don't think Bastareaud is a worthy center: - He likes impact play, but DOES pass when he sees there's a better opportunity elsewhere, as seen by the immediate pass he makes to Gasnier.- He then makes an effort to run around Gasnier to come in support and even hops over Umaga in his stride! (who said he was a fatass lousy prop? no offense to props, just quoting various comments made on this forum)- He then catches a dodgy offload from Gasnier - Runs at a great angle - Makes a dummy only props like Brian May would - Makes a massive handoff (tackle wasn't great, true enough)- Dives for the try (a little spice). What would you need to complete a center's game apart from a side-step and maybe the odd kick? It's only a few seconds of game and it wasn't pure class, just efficiency, which frankly France are gonna need a lot of if they want to beat Wales

Anonymous February 27, 2009 1:44 am

That was a perfect offfload from Gasnier, what do you mean dodgy? He's been doing those for years in league, he'll almost always get a ball like that away in a tackle, if you can't catch it, you're shit, it's not Gasniers fault. In league that would be considered a good offload in contact and anyone who couldn't take the catch would be seen as shit.Dodgy? WTF?

Welch centres going to blow them .... hmmmmm could be taken up the wrong way as well. Oh yeah and its welsh not welch!!!lolGo back to school and learn some english and then come back and attack people for no reason because that what you seem to be attempting too.On the clip Gallas' cousin looks strong and hard to take down with ball in hand so the welsh may have a bit of trouble with him, if france can nail williams and keep Bastareaud going through the centre and offloading to juazion it may be there night, but all that is so easy to say, its doing in thats the hard bit.

Arnaud February 28, 2009 8:53 am

About Toulon? They will not be relagated for sure.Team has been built 6 months and it takes time to make a team afficient (thos who praticed a team sports will know how true it is to create a teamworl) and I think they will continue to improve for sure.About the kicker....what to say? 2/9?Not mentally strong enough. That's all I can say.And about the French rugby, I want to say something that might seems unreal for other but I think the French rugby only starts to rise now.In England, Wales, Ireland,Scotland, NZ, this is almost the top game.In France : 1/soccer 2/tennis (ouch!) 3/horseriding (OUCH!) 4/basketball 5/ handball andt then....comes rugby (300 000 people only affiliates to a club). Most of these clubs (90%) are located in the south of France and only now rugby starts to expands to bigger cities and northern area.Bastareraud is only the first player of a new generation that is coming now. Djibril Camara also from Stade Francais, who is 18 years old and who will join for sure in the next month the french squad is also one member of this new generation.Anyway after yesterday's game, I can't imagine Ireland dominating Wales. This would give us : Wales : 3W-1LFrance: 3W-1L (we'll easily beat England...hum hum...)Ireland : 3W-1L (if they beat England and lose to Wales : ok strong expactation)Nice tournament this year!
