Cardiff Blues thump Gloucester to win the EDF Energy Cup

Cardiff Blues thump Gloucester to win the EDF Energy Cup

The Cardiff Blues picked up their third victory of the season against Gloucester yesterday, winning the EDF Energy Cup final at Twickenham.

Young Welsh winger Leigh Halfpenny scored two tries, and Tom James a third, as the Blues raced to a 22-5 half time lead.

Two second half tries from Ben Blair, a breakaway score by Ceri Sweeney, and Tom Shanklins converted effort all contributed to bringing up the half century as Gloucester couldnt cope with the Blues confident game.

Gloucester scored a first half try from Mark Foster, as well as a late penalty try, but they werent in the match as Cardiff dominated, continuing their fine form after their impressive win over Toulouse in the Heineken Cup last weekend.

Martin Williams put in another Man of the Match performance, and Halfpenny and Shanklin made further claims for Lions honours, as head coach Ian McGeechan and his assistant Shaun Edwards were in the crowd.

In unfortunate news, Jason Spice has played his last game for the Blues as he broke his arm and will be out for the rest of the season. He was injured in the second minute of the game, and will be leaving in the summer for Bristol.

What a breath of fresh air this game was, it was a joy to watch from the opening minute until the final whistle. Fantastic.

Awful game by Gloucester... some player just didn't want to know about the physical stuff.

Gloucester needs some new players, and they need to get a decent flyhalf. I think Lamb is a spoiled brat, and he's not good enough. The way he took Blair out without the ball was just pathetic.

Cardiff played some awesome rugby though, and truly deserved to win. The match against Leicester should be a cracker!

the tackle count was crazy, gloucester were endlessly under the kosh. the stats were 67 tackles to 8 at one point. incredible by the blues.

That first try reminded me of the classic Phil Bennet Five Nations try against Scotland. Great move.

The cherry n whites have Carlos Spencer, but he was cup-tied, so couldn't play, otherwise I definately think he'd have come on. Glawzzter are letting Barkley go back to Bath, after they have wasted his talent, and they wasted Paterson last year. Lamb is not bad, but he needs a kick up the arse and to be told not to kick so much. He is a great fly-half with the ball in his hands rather than on his boot.

Gloucester are perennial bottlers anyway. If your team faces them in a final, or big match, then you have got to be quite confident that you'll come out on top.

The Blues V Tigers match should indeed be an absolute stormer of a match. If it ends up like the Blues Toulouse match I'll be very disappointed. But I can't see that happening, as the backlines are just too potent. Can't wait for Williams V Croft. Reckon they'll be on the plane to SA with the Lions.

i was at this game and it was very entertaining. the blues were just superb with the ball in hand - there were always two or three guys looking for the offload... real southern hemisphere rugby ;)

it's great to see the blues doing well now!
We just need accepted support from the valleys, and we'll have not only a good team but better support!

Can't wait for the leicester game, it's almost sold out i think.

Oh, and to the Gloucester fans, you're having nicky next season i believe? You're lucky.. on some days he is the best 10 in Wales. However, on others he is the worst.. :P

But anything would be an improvement to that Lamb kiddo..
Good luck anyway.

Saw the highlights of this game and fair play, despite not liking cardiff, they played some really attractive rugby.

And to the anonymous about support from the valleys, as a pontypridd supporter, you best not hold your breath. I wont go into this though as i'm sure you know the reasons for it.

great game, I think Guy Noves may be eating his words about the Blues not being a great side.

Gloucester have the 3rd best defensive record in the Guinness Premiership, so to stick 50 points on them is emphatic, especially after they "nilled" the Ospreys in the Semi.

Personally I think the Guinness Premiership is vastly overated. We see now that their are Magners League teams walking straight through them. Well done to Cardiff, superb finishing and support. Could be the dark horses for the HC, look like their peaking now.
