Dan Carter Interview on life in France and his injury

Dan Carter Interview on life in France and his injury

Injured All Black flyhalf Dan Carter is still on the sidelines and in the recovery process since rupturing his Achilles tendon in late January. Contracted to Perpignan, the 59 test veteran and 2005 player of the year will miss the rest of the French season.

Carter, who signed with Perpignan for $1.7 million for a six-month stint, played only five games before suffering the injury at the end of January.

He has chosen to stay in France though, and is currently undergoing rehabilitation for the injury he picked up when playing against Stade Francais.

Carter is now out of his moonboot, and is on the long and difficult road to recovery, that which is expected to keep him out of the game for six to eight months.

All Blacks team doctor Deb Robinson says that walking and building strength is the first step before he can consider running, let alone thinking about resuming playing rugby.

"There has been a bit of wasting of the calf but his wound has healed and there is no stiffness," Robinson said.

She says the end of year northern hemisphere tour is the next time he's likely to be in the All Black jersey, which has now prompted the New Zealand Rugby Union to bend its own rules and fast track England based Luke McAlister back into international rugby.

They have agreed to an exemption of the current selection policy which states a player must be resident in New Zealand, contracted to the NZRU and have played in the competition immediately preceding selection.

It has however been stated that McAlister will have to play for the Barbarians and Junior All Blacks before being considered for Tri Nations selection.

As for Carter, he seems to be enjoying his extended holiday in a beautiful part of France.

I feel bad for the guy, and for Perpignan, though that's always the risk of putting most of your eggs in one basket. No matter how good the basket is, it can still break.

The AB's will play McAlister, regardless of how often they say "rules are rules" they will find loopholes and exceptions. Personally, I just want to see the best players out there on the park.

But God, Carter is the epitomy of the modern sportsmen...bland to the point of being dull. Nice chap, but just like Tiger Woods, Federer etc. Oh for the days of players with real character, who aren't worried by what the sponsors will think....

Let's watch Carter play and then interview the front row, for heaven's sake....

Seriously guys how is he overrated? Im not his biggest fan but hes easily the best 10 in the world.
And i dont think he was ready for these big club defences up north tbh. S14 defences are poor compared to some of the french teams.

the only time carter is any good is on turn over ball when defences are not set and most of the turn over ball comes from that cheating git macaw not his biggest fan but best 10 in the world a bet your part of the bunch munch gang to

Hes a pretty bland guy, good player though.

Shaft April 23, 2009 10:05 pm

I actually think that yeah, you could call him bland, but he's actually incredibly humble for someone who's so highly regarded and praised etc.

He's in the top 3 players in the world, if not number 1 flyhalf, and he speaks as though he's the high school 1st team captain, with less ego though.

I for one find that admirable.

Nice interview.

fucking bland like wilkinson.something about fly halfs.

Boz April 23, 2009 10:35 pm

How could you feel bad for him. He is probably more happy not having to play anyhow. The whole contract was a cash grab/vacation anyways. (Much like Joe Roff). Now he can just enjoy the sun and beach and his $1.7 mil. Simply terrible luck.

Ha, northern club defences, what a laugh. He's better than any player up north. Southern players are almost always better than northenr players, defensivley, offensivley, tactically. That's why the northern clubs pay them ridiculous wages. That's why they dominate world rugby.

To the anonymous above
Have you even watched any of his few perpignian games? If hes better than any NH player how come he got showed up numerous times by french flyhalfs and put on his ass by harry ellis?
Dont bring your SH arrogance in here without solid proof mate.

The best 10 in the game along with Giteau and who cares if he's just a regular guy with not a lot to say, I don't follow rugby to listen to players talk but to watch them play. There's plenty of other motormouths around and you can't knock a guy for not trying to be something he ain't. I hope he does come back better than ever, the game needs all the class it can get.

1.7 is quite abit of money for all they got out of him!! hopefully this will show some french clubs money cant solve everything and they will look for some lad to work with and not a quick fix!! still think the best import in europe was mafi for munster!! ohh and he is a awesome flyhalf but a dry shite aswell!!

Maybe someone should've had a clause in his contract - had him paid him in proration or something.

Whatever...Perpignan is out 1.7 mil and non the better for it...sucks to be them.

As much of a let down as David Beckham's move to the States.

agree with Shaft above, he really seems to be quite modest and humble in interviews, which isn't a bad thing at all.
Sure, sometimes it all seems a little too nice, but not everyone is born to entertain and polarise.
Find it interesting though, that he rates a broken leg as a minor injury ^^

Q|arrrg- Beckham should be considered a success, he played well for Galaxy in a team of poor quality, he made MLS the most famous league in the world for a year, he shifted more shirts and made more money for the club than anyone else could have....seems like quite a success.

Carter shouldn't be knocked as soft just because he got injured. We didn't all turn on Jerry Collins when he hurt his knee playing for Toulon, so why with Carter? he has never been a hardman of the game, but has incredible skill and vision. He is injured, just like any other player could be...It seems amazing that on a rugby fans site people can knock a player consistently rated as the best in the world. who would these people have in their World XV at 10 instead?

Er....Dan Carter says this is his frist major injury apart from a few minor niggles.....

er Dan....do you remember breaking your leg v. AUs in the Tri-Nations in August 2005??? You were out for months.

There's no better fly half in the game, only Gitaeu is near his level.
And Mcaw is an blindside flanker, of course he cheats sometimes, all the best blindsides do. He's also an awesome player.

I know it seems unlikely that Carter is responsible for this, but Perpignan are currently top of the Top 14 table, so I would have thought it was slightly counter-intuitive to say that Perpignan had got nothing for their 1.7mil.
