Rory Kockott red card for flat hand slap on Adam Thomson
Kockott lashed out at Thomson after he was flung to the ground without the ball, and after the whistle. A fiery character, Kockott lost his nerve and lashed out with a mean flat handed left hook.
Thomson was knocked to the ground, prompting assistant referee Craig Joubert to come on and advise referee Phillip Bosch that anything less than a red card is out of the question.
Kockott appeared at a disciplinary hearing today and pleaded guilty to the charge.
His lawyer had argued that a red card was sufficient punishment, but the SANZAR judicial officer felt that although Kockotts action was a reckless, open handed slap as opposed to a punch, it still deserved a one week suspension.
He will miss the Sharks crucial clash against the Waratahs, which will mean a major reshuffle to their backline.
In the same match, the Highlanders Danie Bowden was yellow carded for a high tackle, and has since received a one week suspension himself.

Really a stupid move by Kockott when they are up 8 with 4 min to go and have the ball.

If he had done that to Cowan there would definitely be two red cards.
By the way, WHY THE F*** is that cheating?

At least the slap connected properly. Red's a small price to pay for teaching that idiot a lesson.
I hate seeing people thrown like that, especially after the ball has gone, my bro broke his arm in exactly the same way, and i've seen so many injuries from after the ball rubbish like that.
The flanker should have been carded for a late and dangerous challenge.
Boz May 05, 2009 5:17 am

Every openside in the world cheats as much as they can get away with (see Hand of Back). Get over it.
P.S. I am not a kiwi.
Anonymous May 05, 2009 5:41 am

Most of what he does is perfectly legitimate as well, people jut get annoyed cuz he's damn good at it.
And I'm not a kiwi either.
Anonymous May 05, 2009 6:24 am

next they will be surrounding the ref swearing at him and throwing themselves on the ground when somebody even looks at them the wrong way
im not a kiwi either

Lets now allow our game to turn like soccer and be over run by faggots. The only way to prevent that happening is to throw punishments at the fairies who dive around like little girls. Ala Thompson

I love it. Take that buddeh.
Sure it was wrong, and yeah, worthy of a red I guess, but hell, it's good to see a small guy stand up for himself like that. Thomson was clearly in the wrong, and got sorted out in no uncertain terms.
Dont eff with the big Kockott. :P

so what, if that had been a punch he would have fallen to the ground, that "slap" was probably still just as hard, yeh it wouldnt be as bad as a fist but it doesnt mean its nothing, and if you watch the bloody video you see thomson trips over his feet because he is stunned!
'Cock'ott deserved the red, if he thinks he can get away with an open hand then its ridiculous! especially seeing as Thomson was helping him up at the time....
im aware of the fact that Thomson was initially in the wrong, but he did help Kockott up afterwards!
Well deserved red!

Adam Thomson tripped over his own damn feet!
all you guys saying he was faking, id like to see you take a hit like that and not wobble. especially after you are helping the guy up and not expecting anything!

but the refs need to make a bigger deal of late hits on scrum halves.

But in this day and age of professionalism, they probably lauded him, instead of lambasting him for the embarassing display.
cheyanqui May 14, 2009 1:17 pm

You make a great point. There are lots of cynical tactics which incite the carded behavior.
If the referees cracked down on the initial tactic, it would eliminate the escalation.
For example, a guy carried out of bounds intentionally throwing the ball into the crowd to avoid a quick tap. Or this one.
