Rory Kockott red card for flat hand slap on Adam Thomson
Kockott lashed out at Thomson after he was flung to the ground without the ball, and after the whistle. A fiery character, Kockott lost his nerve and lashed out with a mean flat handed left hook.
Thomson was knocked to the ground, prompting assistant referee Craig Joubert to come on and advise referee Phillip Bosch that anything less than a red card is out of the question.
Kockott appeared at a disciplinary hearing today and pleaded guilty to the charge.
His lawyer had argued that a red card was sufficient punishment, but the SANZAR judicial officer felt that although Kockotts action was a reckless, open handed slap as opposed to a punch, it still deserved a one week suspension.
He will miss the Sharks crucial clash against the Waratahs, which will mean a major reshuffle to their backline.
In the same match, the Highlanders Danie Bowden was yellow carded for a high tackle, and has since received a one week suspension himself.

first i thought thompson was legitamtely falling over because i thought it was a punch...on the replay though, clearly a slap and thompson falls backwards with his hands going to the side of his face, opposite where he was hit.
hollywood stuff. ban thompson for life and arrest him if he goes within 20 metres of a rugby pitch
but seriously, i understand its hefty getting a smack like that but no red card. its a pain in the ass when big guys throw you to the ground after the ball's gone. thompson deserved it

agreed. thompson was being a tool. he knew the ball had gone, but wanted to do as much 'legal' damage to 9 as he could. just a shame that: a. thompson got away with it, and b. forced a red out of the other team.

Even though it's a slap the red card is deserved because that was a cheap shot to the face

think about it from the linesmans position though, he sees a swinging hand floor somebody, if you saw that at full speed you would think it was a punch. dont think he should have been banned for it but i can understand giving a red. the shock of being hit is probably what sent thompson down, i doubt he was expecting that kind of reaction. some of you guys should take a surprise bear slap to the face from a professional rugby player see how you react!

At least the slap connected properly. Red's a small price to pay for teaching that idiot a lesson.
I hate seeing people thrown like that, especially after the ball has gone, my bro broke his arm in exactly the same way, and i've seen so many injuries from after the ball rubbish like that.

Absolutley, Mccaw is an awesome player and like every openside flanker, he always plays on the edge of the law. It's his job.
Most of what he does is perfectly legitimate as well, people jut get annoyed cuz he's damn good at it.

I like Thompson, but the diving girl deserves atleast a 3 week ban for the dive.

Thompson is a poof. I would have waited until I could stamp his effing hand in play to pay him back. That sling shot tackle after the whistle was potentially nasty and he deserved to be smacked like a bitch for it.

it wasn't a punch, but the heel of his palm smacked him in the nose when looking the other way, i would have gone down too, its a natural reaction.

I'm a thompson fan, but he deserved the hit, he really catapaulted kockott face first into the ground, miles after he'd passed the ball. quite the wanker thing to do. i disagree that it was a dive. if he'd taken a swing back however kockott wouldn't have been carded, you can be guaranteed that.

You make a great point. There are lots of cynical tactics which incite the carded behavior.
If the referees cracked down on the initial tactic, it would eliminate the escalation.
For example, a guy carried out of bounds intentionally throwing the ball into the crowd to avoid a quick tap. Or this one.
