Super 14 Pick of the Week - Round 13
We've got some of the best tries from the previous weekend for you today though, as we missed out on that one unfortunately.
Round 13 provided us with some excellent tries from all over the park. Individual efforts and team tries with great offloading, we saw it all as the race for the top spots was on.
The Lions surprised the Highlanders with a fantastic comeback in Johannesburg, while the Chiefs and the Hurricanes battled it out in a game that had more of a Test Match feel. The Chiefs once again produced a superb long range try.
Joe Rokocoko got on the end of some nice passing after a great break by young Blues flyer Rene Ranger, and Bryan Habana showed his class by setting up Akona Ndungane for the Bulls. Jongi Nokwe, another flyer, showed his jetshoes as he finished off a length of the field turnover try for the Cheetahs, in the same match.
In Cape Town we saw young eighteen year old James O'Connor impress once again, as he danced his way through the Stormers defence, but it was the electric home team's fullback Joe Petersen that scored two quality tries.
Keep a lookout for our Random Guinness Premiership Tries compilation coming soon.

wales v new zealand 2003 world cup where wales suddenly remembered how to play rugby after a few years of rubbish and almost caused a big upset.
and 2 eng v aus games - the 32-31 game and the one where luger wins it at the death after about 7 mins of injury time. both classics.
if they could get up thatd be amazing

I can't believe the last try stood though - the dummy runner barrelled over the would-be defender and opening up the gap for the 15 to dance through. Great offload on the way down by the 14, but play should have been brought back long before.

That James O Connor really looks like he could be special. But let's see how he copes with his first set back - cos it'll come. Either in the shape of an injury or dip of form (Cipriani say) or a lesson from a more experienced player (Varndell running into a pissed Tuquiri).
A lot of great running, a lot of great tries. But there also seems to be a lot of space out there!

Nice selection .. but I agree with the comments on the last try, it's hard to imagine a more blatant example of a player running interference in rugby, he lined up the defender and took him out .. if that sort of thing is going to be allowed then they're going to have to change the rules to accommodate it .. let's all hope they don't.
I have to agree, if they dont blow up for something like this then it just becomes like american football where you can interfere with players off the ball (double entendre there im sorry) which is just daft

Giteau's been lucky to escape injury and has certainly progressed pretty smoothly. But in rugby that would seem to be the exception, not the norm.
But the idea that O'Conner is already more of a player than Cipriani will ever be is nuts. On form Danny Cipriani was the most exciting fly half in the premiership, with the ability to not only control a game, but to decide it. He even did this at international level - against Ireland. O'Conner looks to have bags of potential, but let's wait and see before making such grand statements.

(and i never thought tatupu was any good...could have saved the try at the end but missed the tackle)

I just have visions of Bob from Fight Club with his bitch tits when I see Huw Bennett.
But Giteau has muscle titties, whereas Huw Bennett is just a welsh Cartman. He's a boy... With titties.

dont really think we can compare Cipriani to him . Oconnor can tackle by the way - something Cipriani cant do
Anonymous May 19, 2009 11:45 pm

O'Conner has more natural ability than Cipriani will ever posses. Cipriani is limited. O'Conner, can step, pass, tackle, run, kick. The guy can do it all.
I'd have him in a second over Cipriani.
Hackney Griffin May 20, 2009 9:58 am

Yes, he's young and inexperienced, but it's been a while since we've seen such raw talent at a young age, combined with confidence and the great ability to read a game and know when it's on or it's not.
That's from Rugby Dump - it's there review. Not a newspaper overblowing a player. But this site's analysis of Cipriani early on.
He could step, pass, run, kick - and was instinctive. His form's dipped - but I reckon he'll regain it. SO does McGeech - and there are few better judges of a player than that man.
Now this isn't to say O'Conner won't go on to be great. In fact the anonymous partisans and abusive convicts would do well to read the comments I've made here before getting all blogabusive.
But...! But let's wait and see how he develops and copes with all the knock backs that rugby can throw up.
And quickly, on Giteua - the hype was justified, but at it's early stages, just as the hype of Cips obviously has, it confounded a lot of people who saw talent being praised as if it was performance. It is now. No doubt. And Cips will be too. It just won't have been such a smooth path for him.

Oh and for all you Matt Giteau lovers out there, I think he's a great player too. Calm under pressure, a great kicker and fast as well.
Av May 21, 2009 3:58 pm

He is already the best 12 in Australia ! Don't even mention Cipriani in the same sentence. That guy is playing with the saxons. JOC is a wallaby, at just 18.

It would be great
