Stick Phil Vickery on the wing - Great prop try from 2002
The pieces of the puzzle now fit, and after seeing this try from 2002, it all makes sense stick big Phil out on the wing. With finishing like this, you cant go wrong.
It was May 2002 and the Zurich Premiership (as it was known then) Quarter Final between Gloucester and Newcastle at Kingsholm.
The home side, Gloucester, scored nine tries as they romped to an emphatic 60-9 victory, scoring some fantastic tries, but none more memorable than this great effort from their captain courageous, Phil Vickery.
Some superb lead up play from the scintillating James Simpson-Daniel allowed Vickery to be released on the left wing. Showing the Shed his impression of a top class left winger, the big guy fended off the attention of Gareth McClure, then ran over Liam Botham as he dived over for a quality try.
Hes had a long and illustrious career, so it would be a shame for the 33 year old to be remembered for what happened at the hands of The Beast last Saturday.
This try sheds a little light on the situation, and theres no doubt that Vickers would have easily finished both those chances that Monye had.

A great prop. Probably one of the best ever in Rugby Union.

i always thopught he was wildly overrated, but shame to see him fall to pieces last week, we could have done with crack stevens

I still think he's a good prop (perhaps was) it's just the beast is an absolute monster.

It's a great try but it's not as good as Trevor Woodman's one.... don't think i could ever tire of watching that one...

Trevor Woodman is hidden somewhere on RD.
Vickery was a good prop i think "the beast" has just push where it's hurt.
Springboks scrum is coming back at great level as french one.

he's a freakin legend, but his time is over...

Is it just me, or was the beast just driving in for the whole match. My interpretation would have been a penalty to England at every scrum for not driving straight. Watch it again and there's a strong case for this. Again, it's down to the way scrums are interpreted by the referee

Whatever happened last weekend, Vicks has been a great servant to England. You don't prop for 12 years at the highest level if you are not good. Time now for Vicks to put his feet up.....

He said Phil Simpson Vickery as in a combination of Phil Vickery and James Simpson Daniel.

Beast is shite just immensly powerful, adam jones can negated his power as he gone bring him a lot lower than vickery. WOuld've loved to see what tom smith would've done with him :) Technique over raw power any day

great try! but to be fair the beast could do better on the wing and he killed vickery at scrum time...

For me 2 awesome loosehead prop this year: Fabien Barcella the French and Mtawarira, the same profils, great tacklers, mobile prop, and hard in the scrum !

Awesome try, but yes Vickery is actually a simply good prop, but never forget his old days.

i have to agree with ed whilst some of the beats scrummaging was superb he didnt solely push straight, some of the clsoe ups showed this, vicks is a great but jones with start, fingers crossed itll be problem solved

So Vickery can score a winger's try but not do his own job in one of the most significant tours that only come around every 4 years.
It should be noted that the Beast Mtawarira has put on a numerous amount of breaks as well.

While Vikcery was never an awesome scrummager the job that the BEast did on him in the 2nd test had more to do with having tiny Lee Mears at hooker and Alun Ayn Jones at second row behing him. In the 3rd test when we had Rees at hooker at the huge Simon Shaw at second row he had no problme wih the Beast.
He has played for 12 years, has 70 caps and has won a World Cup.....I am sure he will take that!

A 6 feet 4 inch prop is never going to be a good scrummager at internationla level purely based on technique diffculties....I don't care how much you can becnh press. Sheridan is massive and strong as an ox as well but not a great scrummager for the same reason. You are better off being under 6 feet....remember how Paul Wallace negated the Massive Oz du Randy on the 1997 Lions tour. If you are strong squat and can take it low you will be fine.
