Auckland thrashed by Hawkes Bay in the Air New Zealand Cup

Hawkes Bay thrashed Auckland on the weekend as their 2009 Air New Zealand Cup campaigns got underway at Mclean Park in Napier.

Auckland got hammered 47-13 as they were outscored by five tries to one, showing a lack of experience and depth in their opening match of the tournament.

With the bonus point win, Hawkes Bay ended 35 years without success against Auckland, fully justifying the support of their committed fans.

The Magpies streaked off to a 13-0 lead in the firstly thanks to two Matt Berquist penalties and an excellent try from impressive youngster Zac Guildford.

Auckland came back with a converted try and two penalties from Daniel Bowden, levelling the scores before Karl Lowe crossed for Hawkes Bay to give them a 20-13 lead at halftime.

The Magpies took control in the second half and went further ahead with penalties from Berquist, and tries to Thomas Waldrom, Sona Taumalolo, and Jason Kupa to round off the one sided victory.

Auckland face Canterbury next weekend at Eden Park, in what should prove to be another huge challenge for them.

the try at 4:11 shouldnt have been awarded cos the prop is clearly taken to ground, doesnt release immidiatly and then gounds the ball in a different phase

Luxi, your wrong. He had forward momentum which carried him over as well as his fat man bounce and stretched out his arm. It was perfectly legal. Also it was reassuring to see a referee consulting his linesman as opposed to going to the TMO to make a decision - much quicker and keeps the game flowing with the correct decision made

Hawke's Bay looking good again this year, they have some really good players and also very promising young ones in Guildford and Dagg.

JESUS! Why the horrendous soundtrack? Couldn't we have the commentary? Awful, watched it in silence. No more please.

ja what is with the music man? Commentary please - that's how we all watch the game - should be the same with highlights!

Yeah music was a mistake. Why are there empty seats and only half a stadium? I thought rugby was popular in NZ!

Loved the selection of the highlights on this one. I really enjoy seeing the actual infringement that leads to a penalty as the focus of the highlights rather than endless scenes of a kicker standing over the ball preparing to boot it. It's more representative of the match as well since it shows which side was applying the pressure.

I liked the music, but commentary would have probably been better.

anyway, be grateful lads, better see it with music then not see it at all eh?

Good highlights, amazing how Auckland have fallen considering they were the pinnacle of NZ rugby for soooooooo long.

If you complainers bothered to check this clip was made by an Auckland Rugby fan, not by Rugbydump so stop asking to stop the music.

Otherwise make your own clip or pay to watch the game on tv or online.

I quite like the music. What band is it?

Enoyed that clip, some good rugby, especially the competitiveness at the breakdown, which seems to be becoming non existent these days with the fast flowing rugby in the SH. Also really like the Hawkes Bay kit.

SH rugby is very competetive at the breakdown, at any level. You know, Brussow, Mccaw, Smith.
There's heaps of turnovers in SH comps because of players like these.

As mentioned by someone else, the music is thrown on by the people who made the clip - the Auckland Rugby website.

I personally liked the song, but it is nice to have a mix of commentary and music, or no music at all I guess.

Zac Guildford looks a certain all black for the future btw.

to creggs08: the air new zealand cup is the domestic competition in new zealand. it acts in a way as a feeder for the super 14 but in no way is it sub standard, it would be along the same level as the currie cup in south africa
