The Wallabies come right against the Springboks in Brisbane
They upped the physicality, made far less errors, and looked more organised on defence. The passing was also far more accurate. Will Genia and Berick Barnes made a huge difference to the team that had lost six Tri Nations matches on the trot until this great win in Brisbane.
The Springboks created a few things, but weren't quite clinical enough to take advantage.
"The intensity was not quite where it should have been. Its hard to pinpoint where it went wrong. We had our moments and just couldnt put it together," Bok captain John Smit said.
Bryan Habana was forced to make two excellent try saving tackles, Fourie Du Preez ripped the ball from Genia's grasp over the tryline, and Matt Giteau came within inches of scoring but was tackled out by Jaque Fourie. Those are the inches that change Test matches, yet the Aussies still won convincingly. This was their game.
"We had a few things go against us but they kept their heads up and they played for the full 80 minutes," Wallaby coach Robbie Deans said.
"Some you win, some you lose. Well done to the Wallabies; they were brilliant at keeping us under pressure," said South African coach Peter de Villiers.

"aussie commentators are cunts. New Zealand wont win cos they are shit. Wayne Barnes is a fucking retarded, biased twat. Boks by 40 next week!"
Complete brainless arrogance!!!
Springboks have been awesome this year and are true world champions, but how about a bit of graciousness when you lose. Especially when you have been outplayed. Australia were fantastic last night and thoroughly deserved the win.

The Wallabies won because they finally got their intensity up and were aggressive at the breakdown.
And we smashed them in the scrums. Ben Robinson annihilated John Smit for the third game in a row. How many times did the Bok scrum pop straight up under the immense pressure.
Smit would not be in the side if it wasn't for his inspirational leadership... but he won't last in that position.
Blaming the ref is just making ridiculous excuses. Face it! you were beaten by a better side on the night. Even the article in sarugby.co.za said it was an "unexpected but deserving win".
Face facts!

WHY WHY did he go back to the kicking game
Complacency is a HUGE problem of the Springboks, and something they need to resolve right now.

From what I gathered, the lesson is that when faced with a power pack, u can't hide and hope to run them around. The Aussie really fronted up. Elsom was instrumental and Genia asked a lot of questions about the best defence in world rugby.

I'm not mad about Barnes tbh. Took centre stage, which is never a good thing.
He was concise and confident though, just missed a few things and didnt allow the game to flow enough.
Boks lacked 'oomph' unfortunately. Not sure what happened.
Anonymous September 06, 2009 9:36 am

Gotta love the Australian commentators :)
Hackney Griffin September 06, 2009 9:44 am

Even from the highlights Barnes looks to have called up both sides... he's en excellent referee... but then we also shouldn't be surprised that some S.A fans are moaning... it's a shame that such a great team has some supporters more negative than De Villiers style of play
BoomShaka September 06, 2009 10:42 am

That said, Wayne Barnes is certainly not a top tier international ref.
In my opinion he made some poor calls in this game. The ozzies were still the better team and earned and deserved their win.
To be honest though I don't see how Wayne Barnes can be reffing top tier international games after his disgraceful performance in the NZ v FR RWC game. He single handedly knocked NZ out of the RWC.
I know being a ref isn't easy but that's entirely irrelevant.
I'm a Bok supporter not a Kiwi, so that's not sour grapes.

One of the few matches I didn't miss Bernie!
Well done to the Aussies (I'm a supporter), but I also think it's been a bad day at the office for SA! It happens sometimes... They're gonna win 3N anyway!

Watch the replay of the game, see how often the Wallabies dive over and disrupt the rucks illegally or how they seal the ball off or how often they play it on the ground.
Shouldn't be reffing at this level.
Ben September 06, 2009 2:05 pm

5/5 match + Adam Ashley-Cooper is the man.
ilikeboobs September 06, 2009 4:56 pm

I have to agree with some of the at aspects of Barnes' reffing, though. He did seem to penalize SA a lot more at the breakdown in situations where OZ got away with it - as one anonymous mentioned, they simply dived over the ball on a few occasions. No big deal, things like that happen and refs can't catch them all.
But one thing comes to mind that confused me was when Elsom got a break away just before du Preez try-saver and he was deep in Bok territory when he got tackled. He held onto the ball (even OZ commentators thought it was stolen), but for no reason at all, Barnes gave advantage to the Wallabies. I'm not sure if he just got confused about who should get the advantage or what. Things like that seemed to happen a few times during the match.
Not a horrible reffing job - he certainly didn't decide the match, that's for sure. He just didn't seem as confident or capable as most other international referees....
Australia simply outplayed South Africa..what a match!

who said i was a sa supporter, by the name u would guess im a yank supporter, if god forbids it...
and looking at other peoples post, i found alot more agreeing that the ref was harsh on sa, but yet u said he did a good job, a mixed bag... hmm just like the refs reffing. i was just hoping for a free flowing game, like the one before, sa had running rugby and hoping for a comeback by aussie, but all i got was: set piece, two phases, penalty. scrum... penalty, lineout, high kick... penalty!
Bobby Nations September 06, 2009 7:25 pm

I really like how Barnes handled the whole incident from waving off Smit to consulting the TMO for a ruling on the resulting put-in. Well played.
BTW, I'll bet Genia holds the ball with both arms next match and dives lower ;-)
Bobby Nations September 06, 2009 7:35 pm

BTW, Are you in America? I ask because 3 AM was when the match aired in the Pacific TimeZone in the USA. I was yelling (though quietly, very quietly) at 5 AM here in the Central Time Zone. I *love* catching games on P2P now that that is more widespread.
Huh!! the 3rd September 06, 2009 9:04 pm

Possible bias on my part, as then that would've meant the Lions were the only team to beat them, que sera sera!!
Great defense from both sides, especially SA even though they lost. Was Habana's injury serious, haven't heard anything? Could spell trouble if they're without both first choice wings next week.
Barnes isn't the best ref, but when it comes to instructions his pretty clear. I like the way he also refused to listen to Smit for Genia's nearly try. Smit was trying to influence him to a non existant foul (ie, not releasing the ball when tapping), but Barnes was closest to Genia and he tapped correctly, maybe not from the proper mark, but that wasn't Smit's conplaint.
If NZ play like Aus next week they have a good chance, the Boks looked spent after 60 min.
hi ho September 06, 2009 10:11 pm

When I was watching the game I honestly felt Barnes did a good, fair job. As another post said, his instructions to the players were clear. He communicates well with them.
But, given the number of posts that seem to support your view that the ref favoured the aussies a bit, maybe i'll watch the recording of the game that i have. I'll make sure i remove my green and gold glasses when i do.
Bottom line, thouhg, as rightly pointed out by others, Barnes did not influence the result. Wallabies were ligit winners.
Maybe you can be influenced by commentators, but Gordon Bray, Tim Horan and Dan Crowley on Channel 7 (i don't have foxtel) were pretty complimentary of Barnes during the telecast (mind you, Crowley is pretty bloody biased towards Oz i admit).
One of the earlier posts even criticised Barnes for referring Giteau's drop! Bloody hell, that's a bit rough, better to be safe than sorry. According to the commentators, they said he was at bad angle so it was fair enough he checked with the video ref.
My point is, it is pretty easy for people to form completely opposite views watching the same thing.
Geez, my posts are too bloody long!

I love seeing try-savers, and this game was full of them! Way to go, Australia, though. They created so many try-scoring opportunities that eventually, you knew they were going to get one.
Shame about the number of players getting injured, Habana and Polota especially - both put up some great defensive tackles....the way Polota just threw himself into the lower half of Boks and made the ball just pop out of their hands...awesome!

also brussow kneed aussies's hooker (cant remember name) in an air ball dispute. both lachie turner and the hooker had to be replaced because of the kneeing.
im not an aussie fan btw
OpenSesame September 07, 2009 4:20 pm

And Brussow never should have jumped for the ball! The shortest player on the team shouldn't be allowed to go for a ball in the air - it's bound to end up injuring someone. I say we start a petition to make that a new law: "ELV 2.0".
The NERVE of those Bok players!!

Matt_Drinks_New September 07, 2009 11:44 pm

Wallabies did really well to win - but Boks are still the best team in the world.
Can we please stop bleating about knees, and this stupid whining about the ref? I'm sure anyone here who really has half an brain, and the slightest informed opinion about international rugby believes it was a good game where the underdog did one on the big boy.
Cracker defensively from Polatu-Nau, and the Boks on the try-line, but the Wallabies just dominated possession too much and reaped the rewards.
Matt_Drinks_New September 07, 2009 11:48 pm

@ Boks number 1!!
SH teams weak up front?
How good was your front row mate? They got munched by the 'worst front row in international rugby'!

Nothing overrated about the Boks, just an off day at the office.

I wouldn't be surprised if Australia were number 1 in the world in a few years. Half their team are still teenagers.
Hopefully they'll be a bit more gracious than you whilst they're on top too.
You're good but not unbeatable, you were very lucky to beat the lions and NZ are going through a bit of a blip at the moment. It won't be long before they're back on track.
Anonymous September 08, 2009 11:06 am

Everyones so Jealous of South African rugby right now... we have it all... World Cup, Lions series victory, Irb #1, super 14, 7s title holders...
Shows how much more talented we are, we play with half a bench (the other half being quota players) and we also play with the ref against us, the IRB hating us... yet we still are tops...
I suggest you shut up, Andy.
Anonymous September 08, 2009 11:57 am

SA have played some great rugby and have locked out some close games over the past couple of years. But I think they've got to get some flair working in the team again. Habana was one of the few backs to have a good game (In fairness that's a bit of an understatment, I reckon he was the only back that turned up). But post 2003 that's what knackered England, they tried to play slow conservative rugby and once teams learnt how counter this they were screwed. SA have the backs to do this, a couple of decent props and problem solved. The beast is good but maybe only as an impact player, Smit's best at 2.

Amazing saving tackle from Habana, I can't stop watching it.
Great job by the wallaby pack.
Great job by Elsom and Polota Nau, they stuck their bodies on the line and set the tone.
Well done to such a young team having the confidence to take out SA like that.
