Best tries of the Top 14 - Round 5
Perpignan beat Top 14 new boys Racing Metro 18-14 in a tightly contested match, with tries to Nicholas Durand, and Maxime Mermoz, as well as Henry Chavancy for Racing Metro.
Castres picked up a bonus point win against Montpellier by beating them 33-18 following tries from Roman Teulet and Chris Masoe. The Masoe try came from a brilliant break by speedster Mark Andreu who sliced through the defence sensationally. The big kiwi then simply charged over the line to finish it.
Bayonne pumped Bourgoin 53-6 as they ran in seven tries, with Pepito Elhorga, Jean-Baptiste Peyras, and Bejamin Fall all scoring two tries each. Peyras scored a notably excellent individual try.
Brive were also on fine form as they punished Albi by 36-9. Argentinian Horacio Agulla got on the scoresheet, as did Jamie Noon and another foreigner, Antoine Claassen.
Pocket Rocket Brent Russell scored for Clermont against Toulouse as they won 19-12 after taking a 13-3 lead at half time. Montauban just beat Toulon with the final kick in a match that was packed with drama. The hosts won 21-18, with a nice try from Julien Raynaud.
Elsewhere, Stade Francais poor form continued as they lost 30-22 to Biarritz.
Theres some great tries on show here that are, as always, all the more enjoyable with the excitable French commentary. Enjoy.

IMHO, its because no one is carrying the ball while running behind anyone. The dummy runners all run their lines and the defenders are drawn to them, leaving the space. No one is forcing them that way or impeding them getting to the eventual ball carrier. Might have been crossing if the ball had been passed too early, and the No 21 had to run behind someone while carrying the ball (and their teammate interfered with the opposition). A play like this is a triumph of both lines and timing!

Decoy runners are an important part of the game and too few fly-by-night fans understand the rules regarding them.
Just because a decoy gets hit by a defender means nothing in and of itself. Usually it's because the defender has stuffed up and made the wrong descision about which player to mark, and it's no fault but his own.
As long as the decoy runner is not activley impeding a defender from making a tackle, it's not a crossing penalty. Even then, if it's not clear cut, because if the defender made no effort to impede the tackler, but the defender came in on him, it's not a penalty. The defender has to eb trying to get past the decoy, with a realistic chance of tackling the ball carrier, and the defender has toa ctivley impede him from doing that.

In Ireland, Michael Corcoran (RTE radio one) can be a bit like that, especially when Munster are playing.
Sometimes its better to have the radio on and the tv on too, but with the sound down on the tv

Rodolphe Pires is a catatalan and covers also rgby League for the catalans and catch transmissions. His commentary is also colourful for most of the french people, typical of the catalan verve !!
