Xavier Rush skins Peter Stringer in the Magners League

Xavier Rush skins Peter Stringer in the Magners League

Defending champions Munster beat Cardiff Blues 24-13 in the Magners League on Friday night at Thomond Park, but the try of the match came from the losing side.

Scores by Marcus Horan and Denis Leamy and a 14-point kicking contribution from fly-half Jeremy Manning contributed to their first win of this campaign.

There were a fair number of New Zealanders on the pitch, with Doug Howlett and Jeremy Manning for Munster, as well as Xavier Rush and Ben Blair for the Blues.

It was the Blues' Kiwis who were behind the try of the match, as fullback Ben Blair showed pure class as he executed a perfect chip and chase to set up the counter attack just before half time.

Blair regathered his kick for a split second as he flicked the pass to Rees Thomas in one movement, before Thomas found big number eight Rush.

The former All Black turned on the gas as he arched his run around flat-footed scrumhalf Peter Stringer, leaving him for dead as he flew in for a superb try.

That said, Xavier Rush got some serious pace! And little Stringer is getting old

Cardiff have got a couple of choice Kiwis there in Ben Blair and Xavier Rush. Week in and week out they are excellent for the Blues. Great pace from such a tank there.

Stringer too old and small, and slow....God I hate those new Munster jerseys!!!

I have to agree with Connachtfan there, the new all red strip is a bit garish. And Stringer is the most limited, overconfident player I've ever seen. All he can do is pass.

I'm no Stringer fan, but i to be honest i don't think he's getting to old or slow or whatever.

If you look he hesitated when rush ran at him. which left him trying to catch Rush at full speed..

Always rated Rush as a ball carrying monster but where did that pace come from?? That said, think Stringer went for the ankle tap a little early and could have tried to bundle him into the corner instead......

bundle him into the corner? you're kidding right? :D

Huh!! the 3rd September 15, 2009 2:04 pm

I was at the game. Munster just wouldn't get the ball out, Howlett's clearance was terrible, the clock on screen is wrong for some reason and half time was up. Great try though, whoever is saying Stringer is old, isn't Rush older. I think Morland should start until O'Leary returns.

Agree about the jersey. Horrible, the away one is crap aswell.

If RD could get Mafi's hits from this game like before with the Sale game. Some beautiful tackles. He was binned again, must have some kind of Magners League record by now.

yes alright, perhaps not.... Still think he went for the ankle tap because he bottled making the hit.... In fairness if it was me I'd have jumped out of his way and pointed the way to the try line :-)

hi guys.. Huh!! the 3rd, in future if possible, try make a note (albeit mental if you're at the game) of the time that incidents occur at.

I've set up a section on the forum where you can then post the details, and we'll take over from there.

Find it here: Match Notes

Huh!! the 3rd, if you're saying Stringer is slowing in his ability to get the ball out quick, then it's a sad day for Munster...he's been faster at it than O'Leary (who usually waits for an invitation from the president to get the ball out and by the time that comes, he box kicks it away)...and the quick ball is about all Stringer's got, other than the ankle tap fetish. I've been a fan on Stringer's style, so if he's losing it, that's sad to hear.

"sick offload from blair" ^
I second that.

Also a sick munster jersey, but not sick in a good way, horrible sick.

Agreed with pretty much all points

"sick off load"

"terrible jerseys"

"great pace"

Personally I don't think Skinner's feet were as slow as his poor judgement and angle taken. Then again I would not have bet on Xavier's choice of line either.

Brilliant hands by all the Blues players.

PS Howlett should lose the perm

A tank like Rush moving at that speed, even if Stringer had got there he'd have been down like a bunny under an 18 wheeler.

Great stuff.

alf, just to point out, I said nothing of the sort. You may have mistaken me with another, I pointed out that Rush is roughly the same age as Stringer and he skinned him. Others are implying what you say.

Just to add, for all O'Leary's weaknesses, ie, slow passing, I'll take him over Stringer any day. He was Munster's biggest loss against Leinster in HCup semi. When it comes to passing Stringer is possibly the best in the world, so theres no contest, but look how slow Philips was at rucks for the Lions yet was still one of their best players.

I'm not some blinkered Munster and Ireland fan, I've posted above my dislike of ROG before, and how I think Morland should start until O'Leary returns. However, Stringer will do.
