Currie Cup best tries mix - Rounds 12, 13 & 14
It's been a few weeks since we've posted highlights from the tournament, so today we've got a compilation of some of the best tries scored over the last three rounds.
After 14 matches each, the top four are the Natal Sharks, Western Province, the Blue Bulls, and Freestate, who squeezed in ahead of the Griquas, who were the early front runners, despite being a traditionally smaller union.
So the Sharks will host the Cheetahs in Durban on Saturday, and the Blue Bulls will travel to Newlands in Cape Town to face Western Province.
This selection of tries features a bit of the best from all sides involved in the Semis, and others. We start with that classic try from Fabian Juries, and also include another two great moments from the Sevens flyer.
Another stand out is a superb try by runaway train Tiaan Liebenberg for Western Province against Boland. Anyone who's seen him play (he was at Toulon last season incidentally) will know that he's one of the hardest running hookers in the game. Great stuff from the big guy.
The table topping Sharks scored a few great tries too, with Ruan Pienaar, hooker Craig Burden, and nuber eight Ryan Kankowski all finishing off neat team efforts. The last try for Kankowski was made by the unstoppable Jean Deysel, who as usual, swats off tacklers like flies.
One of the best tries though was scored by Griquas centre Barry Geel, who got on the end of a brilliant move, fumbled, but then regathered brilliantly.
Enjoy the tries, and the Semis this weekend.
Fabian Juries brilliant individual try for the Cheetahs

I'd much rather watch an all out GP war.

Remember your cynicism next time a GP TRIES compilation is shown.
I personally think that there's far more creativity and dynamism in SA rugby than people realise.

I'm incredibly suprised nobody has mentioned ANDRIES BEKKER #5 pinning his head back and going for literally a good gallop. He looked like an effin horse running on the pasture, and that offload was tremendous, he nearly fell over it was so awkward for a guy his size. Truly amazing natural talent this guy has. Can't wait to see him in the autumn matchups

I agree with (nearly) everyone else here - for a domestic comp the standard of tries is very, very high.
Anonymous October 15, 2009 5:25 pm

Great tries!
Alexander October 15, 2009 6:52 pm

plus to all those dissing others' tournaments. Grow up, show some respect. enjoy the game.
Ben October 15, 2009 7:15 pm

All the other tries were really good as well.
ElTigre October 15, 2009 8:23 pm

By a scot and a canadian?
I actually laughed. Your COUNTRIES wouldnt even beat GP sides.

And the kicking was but the most minor part of the compilation.
I knows its 3 rounds of the Currie cup in one reel, but seriously, the continuity, the angles, the super pacy props.....
That bulls cheetahs match has some collection!
It was noteworthy that teams who were behind scored quite a few of the featured tries: that in itself is a good sign for the currie cup. (And an omen to/for the rest of the world)
Cheers RD (even the song went well! Great rising noise intro...)

But I'm glad you got a chuckle out of your arrogance. Nice going. Way to get the high ground - laying into a South African competition, then the Scots and Canadians. Anyone else you want to have a go at while you're at it? Perhaps the Air NZ Cup doesnt live up to your high standards either? ;)
Watched this vid again - quality, and besides mr grumpy, I'm glad to see such positive comments from neutrals and fans of good rugby. That's why we're here after all.

Also, I was really impressed by the cheatah's back line. Try No. 1, of course, is great talent. Try no. 3 was great support and TIMING, particular the pass from 15 to 13. 15 held the ball just long enough for the 13 to get on his line and burst through. Great stuff!

The Currie Cup is getting better and better.
I wish Australia had a domestic comp half as good.

The Currie Cup and Air New Zealand Cup are on a completely different level to the GP plus the GP buys half our players? But we still just produce more better ones...
Don't get me wrong GP and HC are great competitions but please don't compare them, these domestic sides would rip apart your bought sides...
Boks are gna play the Tiger's at the end of the year, it'll be a B team made up of most of these players your seeing here, will be interesting to see if the tigers can even beat a side that have never played together, a side full of 'half hearted' defenders...
Anonymous October 16, 2009 8:49 pm

Like how the Lions who had never played together almost beat the Boks in a 3 game series?
Anonymous October 16, 2009 8:53 pm

gotta love the currie cup

The United Hospitals Challenge Cup started in 1874, and is THE oldest domestic rugby competition in the World.
On a side note, much like everything else in Australia, South Afria and New Zealand. The Currie Cup trophy was given to South Africa by Great Britain, along with boots balls and other equipment.
So instead of acting like some out of control children, you should be thanking us daily for giving your countries everything.

Brilliant rugby, great stuff
ElTigre October 18, 2009 1:33 am

The currie cup and S14 may look like sevens but they defend like schoolgirls. I prefer my rugby to be intense rather than 80+ points a game where the defence is laughable.
Shaft October 18, 2009 9:53 am

That other comment by the Anonymous loser is just ridiculous. Get a life pal.
ABSACURRIECUP October 18, 2009 11:36 am

To the guy who posted below me about the lions.
You won one Test, the 3rd one against our B team. Well done, takes all the best players in the United Kingdom who had played more games together than that 3rd test bok side to win a game. btw B&I Lions are the best players the northern hemisphere have to offer so you can't complain.
and Eltigre please just stop posting, that guy below you's comment was priceless.
36 - 0 awesome defence england,can't win a game without johnny...
and the guy who said we should be thanking england, you colonized the guy, enslaved people and made a mess out of it to serve your own greedy needs. We will never thank you for shit!
mise October 19, 2009 10:45 pm

Congrats on that bit of maths - perspective is a wonderful thing.
And so is the rugby in these highlights.
Am I wrong about that kicking theory btw?
This is it again:
It seems that in 3 of the first 5 try scoring clips there was a moment when the kicker turned the ball sideways , just before kicking, to increase control and place the ball somewhere without the bobbling. Obviously the odd person has thought of it now and then in the past, but in this clip it happens 3 times, and works out really well each time.
So is this a new thing emerging from SA rugby, or have I just not spotted it often enough before now?
