Tri Nations 2009 champions tribute - The Springboks

Tri Nations 2009 champions tribute - The Springboks

The Springboks take on France tonight in Toulouse in what will be a massive challenge for the number 1 ranked team in the world. They're a side that knows how to win under pressure though, as their record of late shows. A tribute to the winners is a little overdue, so here it is, as a nice preview for tonight's match.

This year, the current World Champions beat the British & Irish Lions, won the IRB World Series Sevens title, won the Tri Nations, and their Bulls won the Super 14. It's fair to say that 2009 has so far been very much the year of the Bok.

Being at the top isn't easy though, as there's only one direction you can go. Despite the Lions coming pretty close to knocking them off the top spot, the Springboks managed to hold them off and went into the Tri Nations on a high.

Some of the Springbok tactics were disagreed with by many, but they got the job done and a number of players stood up when it mattered, cementing their positions in the side.

Tonight in France, the core of that team will take on Les Bleus, hoping to pick up their first win there since 1997, when they beat them 52-10. On the three occasions since then, it's been the home team that's come out trumps.

The Springboks will be without Jean De Villiers and Francois Steyn, who are now playing their rugby abroad, and are also missing Juan Smith and Pierre Spies due to injury.

After the embarrassment with the Dirt Trackers losing to Leicester a week ago, the Springboks will be looking to make things right tonight, as they hope to reproduce some of the form that took them to lifting the Tri Nations trophy only a few months ago.

Fantastic team, hard as nails, who cares how you win. The scoreline is the only thing people will see in years to come. I'm sure not all of their fans a complete arses.

Good luck this evening, if you beat the french that's the last scalp you need to this fantastic year. (You're going to hammer the irish i my opinion)

Great video.Boks dont appear to have any major weaknesses and it will take a great performance by the NH teams to beat them.Cant wait for the game tonight I have no idea who will win mainly because the Frech are so unpredictable and inconsistant.

Fantastic video. Some frankly incredible pieces of play in there. Two insane try saving tackles in particular just made me think 'wow'! Aus and NZ were made to look very poor. SA just dominated their weaknesses. It'll be very interesting to see what the French can manage against them. If SA can show anything like this form then they'll get pounded into the ground! Not a team in the world that can stand up to them at the moment. Shame really... if only England had some more dynamic players!

If the French decide to show up tonight it should be a cracking match. Gutted that it doesn't appear to be televised here in the UK unless someone knows otherwise?

The game is on ESPN. If France wants to do something they need to play their game, like against the ABs, and vary their attacks. Not sure about Mermoz/David at the center; very talented but young (23 & 21)
GO ON FRANCE!

Agree with Le Brack. Great team, great year. Hypocrisy with Van Der Linde's inclusion considering F Steyn and de Villiers can't be picked.

Don't understand Habana's decision to go to the Stormers though, they aren't in the same league as the Bulls. I know its about fresh challenges, but still.

Here's to France and Ireland wins this weekend. Couldn't care less about Eng, Wales or Scotland. Oh, and also that Italy give the ABs B team a good go however unlikely.

Props on the loose, locks hard as nails, a back row that never stops turning ball over and a no. 8 with the size of a cyclops and the speed of Usain, the best scrum half in the world, a points machine at 10, the masters of offloads and interceptions at the centre, rampaging wingers and a full-back that slots drops from halfway. Anybody thinks the Boks ain't the best in the world?

I'm a bit afraid for tonight actually, I think it's gonna be a locked game, France will try and play the same way the boks do, but they're definitely not going to win that way, and I think it will be quite a boring game.
Actually I've been out of the rugby world for some months due to med school and haven't been able to follow the top14, but from what I heard we (the french) are not top level at the moment... I don't think we can stand a chance against the boks.

The Boks sucssess has been - A massively physical pack alinged to clever tactical kicking. Its what England did to win the world cup in 2003.

Ted November 13, 2009 3:38 pm

The Boks are undoubtedly the best in the world right now but I reckon there'll be quite a few people round the world who bridle at them being 'best of the decade' as suggested above.

Such things are of course very subjective and there will never be a definitive answer but still, a controversial view for those of us on here who aren't Saffers.

One of the all-time great teams (coming from a Scot). I have spent plenty of time with Saffers in my sailing and rugby careers, and have nothing but respect for their attitude: winning isn't the biggest thing, it's the only thing.

Unfortunately, this attitude can lead to unfortunate incidents and, when misinterpreted, can be seen as arrogance and rudeness, but this team has every right to be arrogant.

If every team in world rugby were as passionate as the Saffers, we would show the nancyballers what a real sport has to offer.

Tot siens, Boikies.

South Africa are without a doubt the team of the decade... it had nothing to do with France beating them... it was the national anthems that lost them the game!!

NOT! Haha, didn't see the game myself, but good to hear South Africa have been given a reality check by France. Thats what they're there for IMO, whenever an amazing team seems totally unstoppable and at the top of their game, the French come out of nowhere and beat them.

The South Africans are blaming it on the national anthems though, what a joke... it happens every now and then, I wouldn't go so far as to call it "disrespecting" the nation, I would just call the singer a complete dumb arse and get on with it.

One comment - given the general criticism of SA supporters and how "ungracious the saffas are in victory", some of the comments by the French supporters above might keep things a little in perspective. As South African supporters we see it as part of the game - but clearly there are users of this site of a more sensitive nature.

Bloody French. How are we supposed to live up to that sort of performance when SA come to Dublin? No i'm joking, I thought it was a magnificent game of rugby, and the French team and their supporters should be proud.

By the way, did anyone see Dusatoir and two other French players going absolutely crazy during the match? They won a penalty at a scrum, and Dusatoir started pushing some guy really violently, and I was thinking 'You idiot, don't get the penalty reversed'. Then I realised that the guy he was practically fighting was his own team mate.

Great game.

High on errors.

High on penalties.

But that doesn't matter when teams give it everything. And France could've won by way more had they not missed 5 kicks and screwed up all their chances in the 22.

Worried about SA backlash in Croker though.

France have always been fantastic runners but a few things to point out; they need a proper goal kicker, 10-12-13 need to stop forcing the off-load in the 22 (that is what causes knock ons), South Africa need to come up with a new game plan as their kick and chase plan didn't work, South Africa needs to learn how to tackle, never not play Brussow that kid is a flippin' work demon!!
