Australia bounce back to beat Wales in Cardiff
It was the biggest home defeat of Warren Gatlands reign, and came shortly after he said he wants Wales to be in the top 3 of world rugby by 2011. Australia though, were the team that showed why theyre currently there, as they looked comfortable all match.
They got off to a great start with three tries in 16 minutes from Digby Ioane, James Horwill, and David Pocock. Wales werent helped though by the injury losses of Shane Williams, Leigh Halfpenny, and Matthew Rees.
Man of the Match Matt Giteau kicked 13 points and played a part in two of the tries, making amends for his vital missed kick last weekend. Tatafu Polota-Nau scored their fourth try in the second half.
Wales were booed off the field by sections of the 74 339 crowd, as they failed to create tries despite having one or two pretty good chances. Poor execution and decision making cost them dearly in the end.
For the first time in 11 Tests this year that Wales had leaked four tries or more, something that defence guru Shaun Edwards will need to reflect on ahead of the Six Nations. Gatland himself will also need to do a lot more thinking if he wants his side to be serious contenders for the World Cup in 2011.
"It's the most disappointing performance since I have been involved with Wales," Gatland said afterwards.
"Australia were the better team and deserved to win. They came here pumped up and dominated most facets of the game. They completely dominated the air, produced one of the best offensive displays from an Australian side, their scrum was strong and they were better than us at the contact area.
"But the four tries they scored came from our mistakes and turnover ball. We need to be more desperate as a team but today will be a huge learning experience for a lot of the younger players.
"It was a good lesson for us and we weren't good enough. As coaches we will be honest with ourselves but now it's about how we respond to the disappointment."
For the Wallabies, their tour could have been so different. The difference between two wins out of four and a Grand Slam was simply a last gasp try for Ireland, and a missed conversion kick against Scotland.
All in all, their media gave them a mauling over the last week, but this young side have shown that theyve got it in them to dig deep when needed, and will take a lot of positives away from a tour that they no doubt learnt a lot from.

....oh yeh, i have got to add, i stopped watching about 30 mins into the game....(neither a welsh nor an aussie fan...) so yeh, i might have missed some un-one sidedness after then....
p.s. dont get me wrong though, wales had a few good looking attacks....
WelshOsprey November 28, 2009 10:39 pm

But we did lose most of our team and captain.
Andy powell had another terrible game along with Jamie roberts. Also Jonathan davies is NOT international standard.

oh im sorry....i didnt actually think anyone blamed the welsh performance on losing players....
nice of you to try and start an argument on what seems to be the quietest thread on the site with most people saying congrats....
BigTaff November 29, 2009 2:32 am

Congratulations to the Aussies very clinical display and whoever coaches their scrums deserves a payrise!
Menofgwent November 29, 2009 2:33 am

And out of the woodwork they come.
Nobody used that as an excuse, quit being an ass.
No.7 November 29, 2009 2:53 am

_ just cant remember it now...
the commentators mentioned it today as he sat watching the game
and yes their scrum was awesome!
No.7 November 29, 2009 2:55 am

it says former wallabies prop, and Argentine test rugby prop, Patricio Noriega.
it was the noriega bit that is catchy....
Jon November 29, 2009 3:35 am

He was Australia's starting prop for a long time purley because of his scrummaging so he's a very good bet as scrum coach. There's more to it than his influence though.
Australia has been working on their scrum for years, trying to find the right personnel and coaches. They've finally managed it and actually have one of the strongest scrums in the game atm.
PowellMustGo!! November 29, 2009 3:47 am

They outplayed us everywhere except maybe the in the lineout. Our injuries didn't help but i thought Bishop was quality compared to Jamie Roberts' invisible autumn series.
Tuilagi-Inspired November 29, 2009 3:50 am

Matt Giteau is truely the top inside-centre of Australia and Kafe was right when he said Giteau plays his best rugby at 12.
I would like to see Quade Cooper or Berrick Barnes as the full-time ten.Quade Cooper's attained maturity has really got me thinking if Quade or Berrick should be the ten.
Cooper has the flare,
Barnes has the Maturity;
Then again, Cooper has attained a fair amount of maturity this tour.

I mean im not a fan of vickery either, but at least i can turn round and say the guy is just a useless thug on the pitch....but quade cooper....the guy just pisses me off...personally id rather have an australian side as it is, with someone 50 times better than cooper playing a team i support (meaning my team would be thrashed) than have him on the team sheet....

Some great running rugby by the aussies and a few good tarts by wales as well.
Very enjoyable to watch.

I was praying for scrums all game! It still feels odd being an Aussi looking forward to scrum time, not long ago we were the laughing stock of the scrum world.
Hands together for the forwards, dominant at scrum time and made breaks, runs and passes you'd expect from the backs.
Well done boys!

Are you nuts?
Why do you hate him? No reason at all eh?
Yeah good point mate, well made. Way to contribute.

Please use the upcoming 6 nations to work on scoring tries. This is when the ball carrier is able to ground the ball on or behind the big white line the goal posts are on. Many regards, the Rugby Gods.

Its a VERY good thing they didnt win the grandslam because the truth of the matter is they're not up to that standard. I hope this win doesnt cool the criticism too much. It should provided enough for relief for deans but the truth of the matter is one win(even if it is against the world champions) in the tri nations and a win against disjointed wales and england is not the record of a team capable of winning the world cup. The results could easily have swung the other way as its been pointed out but thats nothing to be proud of. If they want to hold themselves up to one of the best teams in the world then their performances in 2009 are not acceptable.
Just an aussie fan who was rooting against them in this international series because I felt them winning would simply make them more arrogant and lazy.

It was a very interesting autumn with SH teams losing a vast majority of games. and watching australia lose to scotland was a delight! as well as watching SA get raped by france and losing to ireland!
The only team which looked like they had a set was NZ.
Also if we are talking about rugby here, a team which cheats normally ends up with a penalty against them.....now if you are arguing that NH didnt score any tries and only won on penalties, then i put this point to you, the SH are cheats!
simple as!
ALL SH FANS WHINGING ABOUT LOSING TO A NON TRY SCORING TEAM! THINK ABOUT IT, YOUR TEAM ARE CHEATS! (you lost because of penalties!)

To be fair to wales they only had 2 starting backs on the field; Jones and williams. No phillips, Henson, Shanklin, Byrne, Mark Jones. Not to mention Adam Jones, the most underrated prop in the world.
Wales will be back, WITH CREATIVITY AND TRIES!

Are you on medication? If so please consider upping the dosage.
Anonymous November 29, 2009 10:08 pm

3-nations vs 6-nations this autumn.
Played 11
3-nations have won 7
6-nations have won 3
1 draw.
And the funny thing is that's considered disappointing by the 3-nations teams, because really the gulf in class is such that the 6-nations shouldn't really win even as few as three games.
ElTigre November 29, 2009 10:12 pm

hurt them.
Im still confident of an english win at twickers in february ;)
:) November 29, 2009 10:43 pm

Aus were flaky, oooo they beat england....yeh, well who didnt see that coming.....lost against scotland LOL, drew against ireland (disappointing, ire should have won!) and well, hands down destroyed wales!
Now SA.....well lets have a laugh, the world champs, ex number 1's lost to 2 club teams...dont even mention fake boks to me....sorry they were wearing the bok jersey so that makes them boks! if you want to go into those realms then Eng doesnt count because huge injury list meant a large amount of players who wouldnt be picked HAD to be picked, and the wales aus game....how many injuries did wales have?! ......oh yeh, i havent finished....they were messed up by france and lost to them, and lost to ireland....
And ofcourse NZ, who were tip top most of the time!
But honestly that is a long long LONG way from the original 'SH wont lose a single match to the NH' isnt it!
HAHAHAHAHA
p.s as for the medication, i think im on enough thanks!
t0m0 November 29, 2009 11:01 pm

if we have to be lumped together with Italy then you Aussies can have Fiji as your baggage.

Only time they're happy is when someone else loses.
Anonymous November 29, 2009 11:15 pm

"Then there's the way the points have been scored. Six Nations sides have managed just four tries between them in 11 matches against the Tri-Nations teams, while their opponents have run in 23. In a combined five hours and 20 minutes against the Wallabies and All Blacks, England and Wales failed to score a single try. On one side a drought, on the other a flood."
hahaha

No.7 November 30, 2009 12:27 am

Two initial conditions:
1) Foul play = penalties
2) penalty almost always = 3 points if there is a kick for goal
Then 2 simple equations:
NH + Penalties = Win
SH + Tries = Lose
therefore, by simple maths we end up with:
SH = Penalties
aaaaaaand what is also equal to penalties....ah yes...foul play...
soooooo, SH = Foul play.... simple....
ALSO I WOULDNT LIKE IT WHEN OTHER TEAMS LOSE IF THE SH SUPPORTERS WERENT SO DAMN COCKY BEFORE THEY COME UP HERE!
David November 30, 2009 12:53 am

Well done to australia, I'm gutted.
flapjack November 30, 2009 6:32 am

Well done, Australia. Well done.
No.15 November 30, 2009 9:47 am

Also penalties don't always come from foul play. Sides can win a penalty without any foul play occuring.
Anonymous November 30, 2009 2:05 pm

What i think makes for a slightly hollow (please note the use of the word 'slightly' and not 'wholly') is when both sides have kickable penalties, one side scores tries but loses simply because they missed their kickable points - yes i know a team has to pick a reliable kicker as much as one needs a reliable hooker.
I guess that losing for missing kicks (as opposed to not winning any kickable penalties) seems to make for a slightly hollow victory as it somewhat reduces the reason for the loss to one man in the team (in a game frequently referenced as a team sport). This is in contrast to the situation with a hooker at lineout-time where partial responsibility for the lineout lies with the lifters, jumpers and cohesiveness of the forward pack.
AdamJaya November 30, 2009 2:43 pm

Same story here. Australia not quite clicking, Wales are the favourites here, and yet Australia finally click into gear in emphatic style. If Australia had played like this against England, it would have been 50 points easy. And this is coming from a staunch England fan. Great performance, what has happened to Wales?! theyve gone from kings of NH to being plain hard to beat by anybody to being...well, I dont know, rather shambolic today. Good to see the players shouldering responsibility though - note Jon Thomas saying how he was "embarressed" and SJ saying how that wont happen again.
No.7 November 30, 2009 3:23 pm

Yes i do like quicker games but its not really feasable up here on most occasions....so then the NH gets into a routine where its, take the points when you can because is such a messy game scoring tries is going to be hard. and then this becomes our game plan....
personally i like either game though, its good to get a run out, and maybe its backs that are complaining on here, because as a forward i know what a torturous path it is sometimes with the slow inch after inch play!
Anonymous November 30, 2009 8:33 pm

Erm Australia were the better team no doubt but Wales were missing Adam Jones, Mike Phillips and Lee Byrne (3 Lions players) and the Captain Ryan Jones before the game even began, then we lost another 3 players (all Lions again) in the first 30.
Any team would suffer from that.
Anonymous December 01, 2009 1:53 am

Australia were missing Berrick Barnes, Stirling Mortlock and Nathan Sharpe for example.
Anonymous December 01, 2009 3:52 pm

on the day you have to make do with what you have......and australia made better with what they had than wales....a just victory for them i reckon!
well done Aus

Anonymous December 05, 2009 1:59 pm

Look at pocock, twice as strong and he legally dominates rucks and smashes people in defence.
Williams isn't capable of that, he;s just an annoying cunt who plays on the edge of the laws.
Cheating more won't help him, he'll just penalised more.
