Argentina snatch victory over Scotland with a late dropgoal
Scotland had hoped for a clean sweep of their Autumn Internationals, after they had beaten Fiji, then Australia in successive weeks.
Phil Godman kicked two penalties to give Scotland a first half lead, but it was Argentinas Martin Rodriguez who kicked two of his own in the second half, then clinched victory for the visitors with a late dropgoal.
The scalp of Argentina, third place at the 2007 World Cup, would have meant a dream start for coach Andy Robinson. Former Captain Jason White believes that Robinson will make huge changes for Scottish rugby.
"I have worked under four Scotland regimes in my nine or so years on the Test scene - at the start there was Ian McGeechan with Jim Telfer and then Matt Williams followed by Frank Hadden, he said.
"Now Andy is the man in charge and his approach is completely different to all the others. He and his management team are doing things his way and I believe it is the right way.
Okay we lost, which was hugely disappointing. But the bottom line is that we do have an excellent squad of coaches, managers and players at the moment.
"I'm convinced that two wins out of three spells out that we have the makings of a bright future.
Argentina played a far better game in the second half, and combined with errors and a sending off from the home side, got themselves in a position to win the match.
"We lost against England playing well but with some mistakes. Then we didn't play well against Wales," coach Santiago Phelan said.
"This game was very important for us. To get a good result is very important for the continuity of this team."

And I'd love to know what was said to Lamont in the video analysis after he didn't give that pass - would have been a guaranteed try. Ah well.
And to the anon. above, please post a name so we can respond. Yes, you guys had a weakened team, but you also came 3rd in the last RWC, whilst Scotland came a lot lower, so we're definitely on the up. You guys?

And why wasn't Contepomi playing? He's not injured anymore.

Ireland for WC 2011 November 30, 2009 9:11 pm

so you're basically asking if they used south african tactics?lol!!!
not really, scotland did try to play running rugby at times, but are limited in the backline, and can only do so much.unlike SA,who have the backs to cause serious damage but dont use them
Scotsdale November 30, 2009 9:44 pm

Bit of a reality check for Scotland I guess, although a strong Argies side would normally beat them by more I'd think.
I find scorelines like this so unappealing though. Can you blame it all on the weather? BRILLIANT defence, or just lack of creativity and attacking prowess?
Hate to say it, but I'd choose the 'bad tackling' of the Super 14 over this any day.
Hopefully the Six Nations livens up a bit and teams attack more. These few weeks have been dire by pretty much all involved.

Well creggs shows how much you are really interested in the game, and how much you just want to flair up complaints and arguments....
the game happened on saturday you knob!

Did really well against Oz. Just need to pick up their game for every match, not just the big ones (no offence to argentina intended)

Fernandez Lobbe was deemed to have knocked the ball on and therefore when one of his teammates played the ball in front of him he was offside and penalised.
Fair play to Argentina, not very inventive with every planned move involving an up and under, but enough to take the win from us. Good luck playing in the tri-nations...

England show the usual ability to avoid a whitewash without ever actually playing good rugby, thus keeping MJ in position for at least a little while longer.
Scotland finally believe that they can win matches, and even look like they could score tries if they remembered the basics. At least we've got the players, unlike the last ten years or so.
Ireland just keep winning, but without the runaway scorelines that would lead me to bet on them for another grand slam.
France are superb one week against SA and then pretty poor the next against the ABs. Same old France, you never know which one will turn up.
Wales again look like they're on their way down, but you can never write the Taffs off.
Hell, apparently the Eye-Ties played some good rugby as well.

regarding the 6N...Italy is stonger than Scotland ...and it has also fair chances to beat Wales and England.

Please Rugby dump I need a new one so as to watch it before the matches, I already know the old ones by heart.

This kind of game should be taken out back and shit.

Why, oh why, am I not surprised?
I thought he did rather well to defend against OZ without getting into scuffles - especially given how intense the defense was...maybe that was just an off-day for him, eh?

If you can't even make an enjoyable ten minute clip out of an 80 minute game there's a serious problem.
Scotland and Argentina should be put on trial for crimes against rugby.
Nathan December 02, 2009 4:14 am

I know i appreciate them.
Pato December 02, 2009 5:09 am

And about the Pumas side I have to say it, they have a lot of new players with no experience ( martinez, the top scorer is an amateur who plays in Buenos Aire Union ), and a couple more amateurs, and the pros are good players but we always go against the world, I mean, when you start the preparation for the 6N, we are finishing the season, the players got togheter a week before the tour, they never get the time to get togheter because they are all around the world, and the distance it's important...
I don't mean to bore you guys with this comments, but they are not excuses, this are facts...
Anyway, any side could have win the game, I love Scotland, hope you can win the 6N.
Cheers from argentina
Vic December 02, 2009 7:10 am

(not trying to cause a keyboard fight here...) but you say autumn internationals are when 6N sides are starting their season and you guys are ending yours, then you mention you guys being all split up and dont get the time to get together....
...but havent you just had a whole season to get together, test players, attempt to iron out any kinks?!
whereas 6N teams might be blooding new players, havent played much over the summer etc....
i mean id get the point if you said 6N teams are fresh and you guys are worn out....
Anonymous December 02, 2009 1:03 pm

They are at a massive disadvantage and have a valid excuse for producing below average rugby.

'Vic, Argentina don't have anywhere near the resources.....
...have a valid excuse for producing below average rugby.'
Anonymous I think you misunderstood me, i was not saying anything about excuses or anything, i was merely asking about Patos comment....
as for your comment, argentina have just as much time as everyone else....there is only 12 months in a year....and as for their rugby i wouldnt have said it was below average at all...
Bauti December 04, 2009 7:31 pm

Argentina has 40 million people, scotalnd has 5.5 millions it's logical that Argentina has more rugby players, even though it could have much more, since here, rugby is a "posh" sport. And well in Fiji as well as eny pacific isle, there is only rugby to play practically. I mean, if im not wrong, it's the national sport.
Sorry for my crappy english
Cheers

Fiji's the biggest with around about 1 million people.
In scotland and Argentina it's not the main sport and to some extent is considered a bit of a posh sport in both countries.
At the end of the day though Sctoland has the advantage of being a rich place with the ability to have proffesional teams, training, logistics and organisation.
Argentinian and Islander rugby doesn't have that advantage, though both are getting help from the IRB, particularly Argentina.
