Leicester Tigers snowed under by a rampant Clermont Auvergne
Clermont dominated the match before Leicester saved face with a late flurry of tries from Toby Flood, Anthony Allen, and Jeremy Staunton.
"Credit to Clermont for that first 50 or 60 minutes, they played fantastically well," Flood said afterwards. "But for us it is a big look at ourselves. Clermont came out of the blocks and we turned over the ball and conceded points."
"We let it go during that first hour and we are really disappointed they got that far ahead of us," he added.
The two sides meet again on Saturday, this time at Welford Road, but with the control shown by the French side, theyd probably be favourites for the match.
"It is a very important game next weekend. Our pride has been dented, and it is important we bounce back," said Flood.
Leicester were determined to take something away from the game as they searched frantically for two losing bonus points. They almost got them right at the death with one final counter-attack, in what was an exciting finish to the entertaining match.
Clermont, who led 35-9 with little over 20 minutes left, kept them out though, denying the visitors the consolation points.
"We kept battling and in the end we are disappointed not to come away with anything, Flood added.
A great win for Clermont, who will take plenty of confidence from the way they scored points at will in the first half. Leicester, who conceded the most points they ever have in Europe, will need to win this weekend to stay afloat in Pool Three.

Nalaga's first try isn't a try. The ball never touches de ground :p
But if I where a ref, I would award it too

-Great to see Malzieux coming back at his best. (Hoping he'll be playing 11 for France with Heymans 14 soon)
-Great to see the Sherif Cudmore very agressive but only in a positive way.
He was almost funny as to always raise his hands to show the ref he wasn't throwing punches around... knowing his resume on that topic ;P
Big forward pass for the third try, I think there's a difference between a "flat pass" and a ball that goes a meter forward...
finally very consistent ref...

Clermont's poor finish could have cost a lot more
If Clermont can play like they did in the first half, they can go all the way

Nalaga's first try is totally valid, the ball touch the ground, jente. But Leicester last try is just a joke : the last pass is 1 meter forward!!!
Great job by Tuqiri in the second, very nice.
It's a pity that Ospreys, Clermont and Leicester are in the same group. I love this three teams and they play very high level... Unfortunately I think just one of the three will be in the quarterfinals.
I hope it will be Clermont.

Good to see the Tigers spirit at the end though. Looking forward to the rematch!

I'm all for taking risks and attacking from your own half but not if you do it all by yourself...

I didnt see the match but read the above (the clip is loading..)
'Clermont running out victors 40-30'
then:
'Clermont, who led 39-5 with little over 20 minutes left'
i think there is something wrong in one of those....not sure which...
Ireland for WC 2011 December 16, 2009 4:45 pm

where it says clermont led 39-5 is wrong, they actually led 35-9

Jesus, how many passes did Leicester throw BEHIND their players? Ridiculous...but so was Clermont "parking the car and going to get a beer" during the last 20 minutes.
Wasn't Leicester the same side that for the first few weeks of the GP had conceded the fewest amount of tries? ...and here, they had the most points scored on them ever during a HC match.
