Big hit by England against Argentina in the Dubai Sevens

Big hit by England against Argentina in the Dubai Sevens

This is a clip that was dug up by a contributor that has had a few clips featured on here over the years. He's found this cracking hit from during last months Dubai leg of the IRB World Series Sevens.

Dubai was the first leg of the series, which has since had a tournament in George, and will next month go to Wellington, and then las Vegas. Keep an eye out for competition info regarding the USA leg, as we'll have a ticket giveaway for that one.

In the Cup quarter finals of the Dubai series though, England went up against Argentina in a tightly contested match that ended with England winning 17-12.

Fairly early on in the first half, England's Chris Cracknell put this bone jarring hit in on Argentina's Hernan Olivari, actually leaving both players laying injured on the floor.

The referee made a brave call and let it slide, rather than issuing the yellow card in the heat of the moment. As you can see by the replays, Olivari, a pretty small guy to start with, ducked quite low into the tackle.

You can decide for yourself whether you think a penalty, yellow or no action at all was required. Whatever the case though, that shoulder on face contact doesn't look too pretty.

Above the shoulder (right in the face) + no intention at all of wrapping up the player.

Maybe it is not malicious, after all the opponent is short, but it should have been yellow carded in my point of view because of its dangerosity.

I've been in many of those tackle situations (both sides). The nature of the game means these height mismatches will always exist unless pencil pushers turn the game into a pussy sport where you can only "touch" tackle... oh please no!

What's with the Argentine jerseys? The numbers seemed to be tearing off the back...do they not play with professional kits, I guess?

'no intention at all of wrapping up the player.'

What tackle were you watching?

Hmmm, yeh agree that argentine jerseys numbers are a bit odd :-/

maybe a yellow for the tackle, he was going high anyway, it just would of been chest high he hadnt ducked....

....said it before about other tackles, if you go high then you have to pay the price if it goes wrong....

yellow max, penalty min!

Nah that tackle was fine he was committed before the guy ducked, and he DID wrap attempts to wrap arms around. Do wonder what tackle other people were watching!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It doesn't matter if he ducked down, it's still too high.

No reason for a card here. The tackler was fully committed before the ball carrier ducked into it. Looked to me like the ball carrier meant to get below the tackler, just didn't get there fast enough.

As Gman said, the rule says tacke must be at shoulder height at maximum. I don't remember seeing anything about ducking or short players. Of course this is a good explanation for this high tackle, but no excuse in my opinion. Yellow card!

yeah let's leave 190cm players out of the game cause they're too high tacklers.
proper tackle (before the guy ducked it was chest high), bad shielding = there you go, it's an injury

great call by the ref nice to see some refs dont jump for a yellow.

the guy ducked and didnt sheild himself. you have to pay the price...

he wont be doing that again anytime soon XD

I agree with a few people on this, yes the tackler was committed no doubt about that, and had the other guy not ducked down it would have been a crunching legal hit, albeit higher up on the body. I think though, like others said if you go high as in chest high, and it goes pear shaped and you hit the guy head high then its your own fault.

Really you can make great tackles around the waist and mid section, so the tackler took the risk and went for a higher up tackle but the player ducked, in my opinion its the tacklers duty to make a correct tackle.

I think a yellow would be considered harsh, but i wouldnt be shocked if a yellow was given.

It was an accident but then it doesnt excuse it.

high, shoulder, but maybe accidental because the argentinian player seems to fall.

penalty, no yellow, good decision

I agree with the ref, high tackle but no intention

By the book that's an illegal tackle but I dont think it was intentional.

However, wouldnt be suprised to see a yellow in that situation.

Let's imagine it was a player of Islander descent making that tackle, pretty sure the headline would read..

"Red card for crunching high tackle"

Hard call, i'd probaly say a penalty maybe yellow. I think the fact is that despite the other guy being minute you still have a duty of care.

'Hard call, i'd probaly say a penalty maybe yellow. I think the fact is that despite the other guy being minute you still have a duty of care.'

Exactly!!!

Well, 'inside shoulder' what do you expect? everyone hears about an 'islander' game and they think 'ooooh, gonna be sore bodies the next day' because islanders put in such hard hits, unfortunately to this day, the hits are getting higher and higher and harder and harder, to the point where islanders and illegal hits are unfairly grouped, (BUT THEY ARE STILL GROUPED!!!) so in all honesty they bring it on themselves....

Jamie Cudmore loves to use his fist, so each game you watch out for it (as do the french), McCaw always plays the fine line, so you watch out for it....

Previous records are what catch people out, thats why some players have such small bans for some things because its out of character.

although, if you look at most games lots of people are aiming high, this is going to become something all ref's look out for in every game! its just the islanders got there first!

If you watch the tackler before the impact he is bent over ready to make a clean hit. He doesn't move to go for the head, the ball carrier ducked into it. I think the ref got it right. Put this guy on the IRB's disciplinary committees!!!!

I inclination not concur on it. I assume precise post. Especially the title-deed attracted me to study the unscathed story.

Sorry, he ducked, which is out of the tackler's control. Should he take the blame for that? If h'ed stayed upright, woulda been seen a fair crunching hit. Price to pay for ducking!!!

tough one... nature of 7s tackling means going ball an all to try and eliminate offloading so across the chest is ideal and the way he has lowered into the hit makes it look pretty nasty. its one of those that its not a bad decision to not give a yellow but if one had been given you couldn't have had too many complaints. i think the ref probably got this one right.

the player turned low yes but the the tackler clearly followed through upwards after the turn,
if he hit high but pulled out, thats unfortunate, but this guy had no intension of pulling out, prob because as a player you don't want to miss a tackle.
