Lee Byrne to appeal his two week suspension
I spoke about the incident briefly when posting highlights from the match a few fays ago. Today Ive got a short clip for those of you who'd like to see exactly what happened.
Byrne has since pleaded guilty to the charge of misconduct and will be out until February 13, the same day that Wales play Scotland in the Six Nations. He will however miss the opening match of the tournament, against England.
Ospreys themselves were fined 25,000, but werent docked any points, which may have resulted in Leicester going through rather than being knocked out of the tournament.
The panel found that Byrne had no effect on the result of the match, but that he should have known that he needed permission to return to the pitch.
"The committee found that this represented a clear breach of the substitution protocol, which forms part of the Heineken Cup 2009-10 tournament rules, and that the club could have done more to ensure that such a breach did not occur.
"However, the committee found that the breach had not been deliberate or premeditated on the part of the club's management and that there had been no material effect on the match."
Byrne will remain with the Wales squad and is set to appeal the decision. He wants to take part in the match against England.
"The player has been taking legal advice and will lodge the necessary documents for the appeal," a Welsh Rugby Union statement said.

On the other hand, sucky for Leicester too, although I don't think that would have been a clearcut try anyway

sky obviously don't understand rugby.
massive error by the staff but its hard to see why byrne was banned, he was oblivious to the error, as the video showed when he was called off.

Byrne should man up and accept the punishment.
I have no sympathy at all, Byrne admitted he went onto the field without another player coming off, the fact he affected the play only underlines the advantage that having an extra player on the field can result in.
Ospreys deservedly copped a fine, and I agree too with the suspension given Byrne knew he had come on without another player leaving. I'd still be interested to hear why Byrne thinks he's been unfairly banned, after what went on last season with bloodgate, no-one should be surprised that the authorities would be in no mood to be lenient on a perceived abuse of the substitution process.

"I've barely gotten a wink of sleep since it happened," said Wheeler in an exclusive interview with The East Terrace. "I cannot believe that anyone would ever want to risk tarnishing our great sport's name by bringing it into disrepute. I was speaking to former Leicester flanker Neil Back about this whole Ospreys' affair. Neil has done everything there is to be done in this game and is a club stalwart who played a major hand in winning several European Cups for this club. I always turn to him when I have major rugby issues to discuss. We were both shocked at the deceit of the Ospreys and it's a shame to think that such a wonderful tournament such as the Heineken Cup has been dirtied like this."
NEIL BACK LECTURING ON DECEIT??????????? HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

You get idiotic players not using the system administered by the woman and then whining about getting fined for it - despite admitting to wrong doing.
And then you get idiots on rugby fora claiming that it's a woman's fault and that they shouldn't be in the game.
Rugby; a great bastion of patriachy.
Bunch of morons.

Byrne have seen his 2 weeks of suspension chenged in a 5000euros fine...
I've nothin against Byrne, i like this player, but is there anybody who thinks that sometin going wrong here..?
Few players were punished with few weeks and months of suspension, and will missed 6 nations tournament. Byrne lawyers argued that erc santions should be applicated just for erc... as stade franais lawyers also explained for dupuy...
I thought that rules were the same for everybody...
apparently, it doesn't annoy some celts executives..
this tournament begin with a bad taste in the mouth

Yeah something very wrong that he was banned in the first place.
Peter Squealer loses his fight for lost revenue. Poor baby, Munster should open up a case for 2003.
