Behind the scenes at the 2010 Six Nations launch
While Ireland were Grand Slam champions last year, some of the bookies have tipped France to take this years championship, with Ireland second and England third.
Ireland are without a doubt the side to beat though, as their form last season showed that the experienced outfit are now a powerful side with loads of talent and genuine class in a few key positions.
England are in somewhat of a rebuilding phase, once again, as their dismal string of injuries seems to be behind them. Theyre still missing experienced front rowers and one or two others, but have named a strong side for their match against Wales.
Its hard to know to expect, so well expect the unexpected from an English side that are hungry to perform.
Wales have had Lee Byrnes suspension overturned, so hell be a key figure in an exciting backline that will look to prove that they can play the type of rugby that we all saw a few seasons back.
Scotland will have their tails up after an impressive few games in the November Tests. Theyll be a tough nut to crack at home, and coach Andy Robinson will be instilling the faith in them that they perhaps lacked in the past.
Italy are missing talisman Sergio Parisse, so their true test will be how they come together as a side without him. As always theyll struggle with depth but have shown in recent years that they can be quite strong on their day.
France are, as always, totally unpredictable. Blessed with natural talent and power up front, theyll be really tough to beat at home, and will travel with confidence.
With all the hype that surrounds the tournament off the field each year, well be hoping that the rugby delivers in terms of quality. While we can expect things to be as tight and tense as always, lets hope that we get to see real ambition and attacking flair. Bring on Saturday.
We'll have more previews this week, as well as highlight clips throughout the tournament.

They should do well this year, unless they are typically French and inconsistent.

Funny BOD saying any one of 4 or 5 teams. Basically - anyone but Italy.
Where were the interviews with the French and Italian Captains.
Flippin' BBC.
Anonymous February 03, 2010 11:31 am

As usual the brits and the irish commentators sound arrogant and don't even mention France as a potential winner"
Most of the English bookies and pundits have France down as either favourites or joint favourites with Ireland so quit your bitching.
Every single post on this site descends into an argument within the first 10 comments, even the football forums aren't this bad.
Anonymous February 03, 2010 11:33 am

Flippin' BBC.
Yeah imagine that, a British/Irish broadcaster speaking to British/Irish players..... those cunts were speaking English too, how rude, why no French??????
rodofle February 03, 2010 11:59 am

"Most of the English bookies and pundits have France down as either favourites or joint favourites with Ireland so quit your bitching."
I wasn't speaking about the bookmakers but about the three muppets in the video (wood, dallaglio and leonard) who largely reflect the tone used by british medias when it's about european rugby. British medias take non english speakers with arrogance, that's all i say, but hey, i can live with that don't worry! Have a great day!
Anonymous February 03, 2010 12:01 pm

This will be the same as usual. England will play one expansive game and win narrowly against average opponnents, the media will see it as a rennaissance in English rugby, then it'll be back to the usual boring stuff a few narrow wins and finish in the top half.
Italy will prove one upset but but will again prove that the forwards are fairly strong and the back line needs more depth.
The Welsh will play some great flowing rugby, Shane Williams will look awesome, there will be some up and coming talent and talk of Henson and when he returns (yawn), but they'll get stuffed by one team and lose narrowly to some mid tablers because they can't lock out games.
The Scottish will knock seven shades out of any opposition they have but will avoid crossing the try line as though the damn thing is laced with kryptonite.
The French will smash someone mid way through the comp, they'll lose to someone they shouldn't early on and they'll make a mess of a final match that would have seen them winners if they could maintain form. Any player that is supposed to perform will be distinctly average, minus the occasional moment of total brilliance.
Ireland will slowly creep up the table, O'Driscoll will again be the one many Irish try scoring machine, everyone will wonder why exactly Horgan gets a green shirt and they'll let in a few soft tries as they don't seemed to have grasped that O'Gara is to tackling what eastern block Skodas are to formula one. Sexton/O'Gara will lock out any games with a one point advantage and prove the theory that a team can't win a game if it spends 70% of the match in it's own 22. Ok, it wont be excting but it'll be a winner.
Can anyone see it deveiating from that?

You summed up the 6N 2009, did you? Now it's 2010 man everything has changed
3/4 centre February 03, 2010 12:37 pm

The anon who sum up the 6N 2009 is quite ridiculous too... The calendar, the teams, everything has changed. If the tournament was the same every year, it would be booooring. The three last winners are different...
Toulouse16 February 03, 2010 1:01 pm

Well France will start its campaign by winning in Scotland then smashing up Ireland in a fortnight, and finally wipe out England in a roary revenge... !
Watch out and stick around all you rugby lovers !!

england is all untapped potential. doubt they'll make any progress this year.
wales is the unknown quantity. depends on how they're feeling on the day.
hopefully we'll see some upsets from scotland and italy!! :D

Ted February 03, 2010 4:38 pm

Where some people get the impression of a conspiracy against the French, God only knows. And as I've said before, all you have to do is look at the comments left under the Top 14 vids to see that fans from all over the world love French rugby. So calm down messieurs, nous vous aimons.
Anonymous February 03, 2010 5:06 pm

Wasn't it supposed to be the presentation of the 6 national teams of the 6 Nations tournament? You don't think it's surprising to ignore 2 teams in a 6 teams international tournament and not to even mention it in the clip?
Oli February 03, 2010 5:13 pm

Just shows how open minded the people who watch the BBC are.
I mean do you not give a crap at all what the French or Italian coaches think of the upcoming 6N?
Flooz February 03, 2010 5:25 pm

A competition just played by the british and irish.
Not a word given to french and italian representants.. Not a word about their chances.. It sums very well the narrow-minded mentality of british tv broadcasts.
Maybe it's because, they don't speak their language (nick mallet is quite fluent with english no ;)?)
But I'm also disappointed that Dusautoir couldn't be present to the meeting. It doesn't send the good answer. Whatever, the real answer will be on the pitchs, as usual, should we say... :)
Anonymous February 03, 2010 5:32 pm

Hopefully rugbyfans in general don't feel that way about french rugby, however this clip is quite poor and relevant of hownarrow minded television is, even when they present shortly szarzewski they show medard skills instead...

Refer to Chabal.
When in England, you speak English.
BEN February 03, 2010 6:06 pm

u sum up very well the british mentality: narrow, isolated, arrogant.
british have created a lot of sports (tennis, football, rugby...) but would they develop themselves without other countries to compete. I hope ur comments were just a bit of victorian-nostalgic anger..
rugby in general, should be more open to other countries than be turned on 4 sour little nations..
Anonymous February 03, 2010 6:12 pm

but i can understand french, they may win more 6 nations than england or ireland this last past years, and bbc don't even give a shit about them..
we talk about 6 nations, not 4, bbc should know that
Anonymous February 03, 2010 6:14 pm

dingo February 03, 2010 6:24 pm

irish don't give a shit about the british.
But they can celebrate a strange patriotism with british&irish lions every 4 years.
weird and quite schizophrenic

As usual the brits and the irish commentators sound arrogant and don't even mention France as a potential winner, which is incompetence or unrealism. Brits and irish really seem totally closed to non speaking english people! Sad and narrowminded spirit... I hope we will prove those morons (wood, dallaglio, leonard)wrong. GrandSlam for France yes papa!
Sorry rodofle, didn't understand a word you said.
From what I believe, bad weather delayed the French party, so that may have had a part. And this is the BBC, not RTE, british not Irish.
All the things I read from the launch gave equal footing to each team, coach and captain.
Pity about the Italians being refused entry to Magners. This will hamper 6N longterm.
mise February 03, 2010 9:56 pm

(Actually, that would be more interesting, with the crapness of Plasma, the new 3d options....far more interesting)

Rob Andrew February 04, 2010 12:02 am

I've just quit a soccer forum (reading, not participating) because the comments were so low my mind threatened to go blank. Well, I won't last long here because this thread doesn't help. (someone even mentioned the WARS? I'm still laughing)
I thought we were all faaar better than this. I still impatiently wait for the Tournament. Even if, let's face it, it can totally turn out as described in the first posts.
btw, I've watched Russian TV and holy fuck not a word of the tournament! (oops, "TOURNAMENT!!", because i'm angry there). What a bunch of narrow-minded arrogant eastern bitches they are on Russian TV. Poutine must be leading that stuff.
And M6 spoke about the 6N too: they only mentioned Bastaraud and Chabal who's now forbidden to use Twitter. Any sort of brainless conclusion or that's ridiculously ok?
Hey Doyle, starting your post with "you french on here are a bunch of bitches" is soooo educated. I've talked to a lot of British AND Irish, you're the first one using it. By your own criteria, you could be French. Next time I come, I'll bring cameron maxted and you'll all regret it.
No.7 February 04, 2010 12:11 am

'well we have a strong team this year, we'll try our best but there is some stiff competition this year but hopefully we'll come out on top'
say the above in a scottish/welsh/english/irish/french or italian accent....everyone says the same bloody thing....previews are great but really we are just making excuses about what to watch until the weekend!
does it really mean that much to you? or couldnt you perhaps just sit there and think 'oooo weekend soon!'
and ben:
'to the anonymous ridiculous just above,
u sum up very well the british mentality: narrow, isolated, arrogant.'
the comment above you refer to is a take on what chabal said when he was asked to answer a question in english.
'No, we are in france, we speak french'
etc (not sure if you're aware of that)
and before the french think im starting another conspiracy or hate crime against them, im aware he apologised later on stating he was tired and couldnt concentrate on english words!
Third Centre February 04, 2010 12:26 am

Also Swarzeski has the best hair in international rugby. FACT
I'd love to see Ireland retain it but France, Wales and England could easily beat us and Scotland can really ruin a party !!!
Now everyone chill the fu*k out!!! Lts enjoy the tournament.
Also Pieter I think the song was dog days by Florence and the MAchine

Now it smells like xenophobia spirit.
the english insults frenchs, frenchs think that the whole world is against them, italia exist?Aaussies are just good to fuck sheeps and so many others youtube style comments.
A bit of objectivity, should be more appreciated. u can moan, polemic, be critic without being nationalist.
Here we talk about the fact the bbc doesn't give a word about france and italy which are curiously part of the 6 nations.
Personally, i find it very curious , and weirdly very usual from bbc. we don't speak about nationalism here, but a certain lack of interest of british media.
To conclude, i don't know who will win 6 nations this year, it's quite open: Ireland and France seem favorites, but i think england could reserve some surprises in attacking rugby.
See u this we for the RD-passionate moaners and congrats :-)
un Froggy February 04, 2010 9:41 am

On se calme, les gens. It's a bloody British programme. Obviously they have a couple of English pundits. As for Ireland, they did win a Grand Slam last year, didn't they? Might be a reason why they get interviewed.
It seems to be a growing trend on RD that the French see everything as part of an anti-French conspiracy.
To all froggies and rosbifs here: can't we all grow up and go back to that good old, simple and healthy mutual loathing? And leave the Irish out of it by the way, nothing wrong with them.
Can't wait for France-England. What a walloping that will be.
Anonymous February 04, 2010 10:10 am

I'm not sure any more what song you are looking for. But the second one, the country one, is "When the man comes around" by Johnny Cash. I hope it was what you were looking for. Otherwise, my apologies.
And please stop the stupid nationalist conflicts. We are ALL europeans. Anything else is bullshit.
Anonymous February 04, 2010 10:34 am

2. France
3. England
4. Scotland
5. Wales
6. Italy
Anonymous February 04, 2010 11:39 am

Waiting impatiently for the battles to begin on Saturday.... bring it on!!!
France, Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland
Ireland to beat France and loose a few players to injury (eye's maybe), but slip against England... and squeeze past Wales... sorry Scotland and Wales.
Mike February 04, 2010 12:51 pm

French fans, please remember that there are differences between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Just because most of us speak the same language in our day-to-day life*, it does not mean there is only one nationality there :)
*If we are in school, some of us must speak Irish or Welsh...
Maximus February 04, 2010 2:01 pm

Technically, if what a history-geography teacher told me recently is still true, England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are different countries but the same nation.
What's more, when it comes to rugby Eire and Ulster play together. That is one team for one country even if it represents a nation (Rep Ireland) and a part of another nation (UK).
There may be mistakes in my reasoning but this is how it was explained to me anyway and why it is confusing. It can also try to explain why it's easier for the majority of us to take short cuts and to consider you all as a package: the English speakers.
Whoever reads these lines, if I'm wrong correct me (always ready to learn a new stuff) but don't start some crazy thread please, it isn't worth it.
France FTW (for the win, of course) even though I'm a bit surprised by our starting XV.
poccio February 04, 2010 2:47 pm

Nah, they are all different nations, but one country - UK.

OJ Simpson is innocent BTW
Mike February 04, 2010 3:57 pm

I still favour France for the competition. We will see!
Anonymous February 04, 2010 8:21 pm

After all, are they not into the Six Nations tournament ? Oh and Szarzewski can speak in English.
It's weird to hear nothing about the Frogs when they're favourites with the Irish.
"holy crap quit whinging frogs nobody gives a shit what you guys think. you were invited to the 6N so if you dont lik it get tf out"
This is why you took a shit time to answer about what they think. It remembers me what a German told me about us (British) as the USA poddle into the European Union.
"Maybe they were only talking to the nations who don't run away from wars?"
Didn't we run away at Dunkirk to our beautiful islands ? Just askin'.
Anonymous February 04, 2010 10:19 pm

Anonymous February 04, 2010 11:03 pm

You prick!
Apparently wars mean nothing....the world still ended up with morons like you:
'It remembers me what a German told me about us (British) as the USA poddle into the European Union.'
im sorry, but first go to school, learn how to write something that makes sense, then come back and leave a sensible comment!
Anonymous February 05, 2010 2:25 am

you should probably hope for more realistic things......
such as:
'i hope scotland wins the 6N grandslam this year!'
:( honestly though, i wish....
Eoghan February 05, 2010 8:44 am

Ireland 35 Italy 15
England 15 Wales 18
Scotland 21 France 25 or Scotland 3 France 30 can't decide
