Cory Jane flattened by Sireli Naqelevuki
The massive Fijian and Stormers winger trampled Jane on his way to the tryline, but was unfortunately called back by the ref for a forward pass.
All Black Jane was out cold before he hit the floor, as he clearly came off second best in this clash of heads. Naqelevuki on the other hand, barely flinched. As if the initial blow wasnt bad enough, the impact as Jane hit the floor was also pretty horrific.
"I got knocked the f**k out lol. That's what happens when 120kgs hits 88kg," he said later that night on Twitter, adding the next day that his face looks like its been hit by a bus.
The Hurricanes, who lost badly to the Cheetahs a week ago, now travel to Pretoria for a meeting with the formidable title holders, the Bulls. Their tour has been a disaster so far, and doesnt look like improving any time soon, according to the New Zealand media.
On a positive note, Maa Nonu has been let off after he was cited for a dangerous tackle on Stormers flyhalf Peter Grant. The judicial officer felt that the penalty on the field at the time was fair punishment for the high, no-arms tackle.
Its Nonu's third misdemeanour in three matches, following yellow cards against both the Lions and the Cheetahs. The Hurricanes will at least be boosted by his availability for the Bulls match, following the loss of Jane after this sickening blow.

There's going high to stop the offload and then there's being totally uncomitted and getting knocked out.

Thats brutal Fijian power for you.
Anonymous March 16, 2010 2:23 pm

In fairness I think he backed out of the tackle which left him pretty vunerable. Don't think he'll be doing that again.
No.7 March 16, 2010 3:48 pm

looks like he just went in high to stop the offload and came off second best....
Scotsdale March 16, 2010 3:52 pm

Nice comments by Jane on twitter too lol. Fair play to him

WP have to re-up Sirelis contract at the end of 2010.
Will Topps March 16, 2010 7:48 pm

Even if Naqelevuki hadn't heard the whistle, which he surely must have, he need only have dived to the right to score, the contact was on the try line.

.....he's a fullback....last line of defence, if he goes high he can stop the player:
a) offloading
b) falling over him thus reaching the line...
Now i know this shows the risks of going high but to say 'Go low' or 'always go low' isnt really the answer....

He is very skilled in attack , but not the best in defence.
This happened because he heard the whistle, you can see he didn't fully commit to the tackle.
Anonymous March 16, 2010 11:10 pm

You have to go high for a few reasons in modern rugby, the main one being to stop offloads.
It's not an option to go low on most tackles, you'd be letting your team down, allowing easy offloads.

Jane is a sick player... Ran rings around the Wallabies and then the French in 2009! Couldn't believe the AB's didn't start/use him against the Springbok in the Tri-Nations considering the amount they were kicking!!
mayo March 17, 2010 7:51 am

Pretty funny-looking, though, the way he fell.

Also Jane is an average player, thats just the fact of it. Im Irish and I can honestly say without just being nationalistic or anything that he wouldn't make the Irish bench, he would be third choice behind rob kearney and geordan murphy, both of whom are proper world class fullbacks
semperfimamba March 17, 2010 5:11 pm

Gruesome hit but nothing malicious.

1st time I've ever heard a SA crowd clap for a kiwi..
Mike March 17, 2010 10:17 pm

Hope there was no real damage to Jane.
Anonymous March 17, 2010 11:44 pm

Ireland has never beaten NZ, in over 100 years of rugby.
Their starting winger is always going to be class, almost certainly better than any player on offer from Ireland, a team that has never, ever, in the history of rugby, beaten the All Blacks.
You're an idiot if you think Jane isn't a good player.
He's classy, great skills, his passing, catching, kicking, stepping and pace is all world class.
And I'm not a kiwi, I'm an Aussie, so I'm completely objective.
Kearney by the way, is a good fullback, but not yet proven as one of the best.
Murphy is a joke, and would never make a tri-nations squad.

If it makes you feel better then keep telling yourself that while the rest of us have a good laugh. Also the first part of your post about Jane not being full-on for the tackle has been mentioned plenty of times - the whistle had gone well before. Waste of space comment really.

What happened between NZ and Ireland 100 years ago has no bearing on whether the Jane would get into an Irish squad of 22 in 2010. Personally, I'd have him in there, but you could certainly make a good argument that in Kearney, Fitzgerald and Bowe (all Lions caps v SA), you have a back 3 he would not get into, leaving him to fight for a utility place on the bench with someone like Earls.
I'm not stating it as fact! But you could certainly make a good argument. I think Jane played in that great match versus Munster in November '08. Perhaps there is some homework there for the other 'Irish' poster to look at...
Peace!
Anonymous March 18, 2010 2:16 am

Jane would be awesome for Ireland. He is a guy who has forced rococococo (I can't spell his name) oout of the all blacks.
He's all class.
Kearney and Bowe are good players, no doubt, but getting into Ireland's team is easie rthan NZ's.
That's not disrepsectful, it's harder to get into any other team besides the all blacks.
Tui March 18, 2010 2:27 am

Jane is a standout in the backline either at Fullback or Wing, like I said... Jane would walk into ANY national team (Especially Ireland).

Mike March 18, 2010 9:37 am

Anyone who thinks Kearney and Bowe are better than Jane are having a laugh... There is a reason Ireland have never beaten the AB's....
So until Ireland beat NZ, it is impossible for ANY Irish player to be better than ANY NZ player? So, by that logic, the worst player ever to wear the silver fern is better than the best player ever to wear the green. So some farmer who got a a game for the ABs in 1905 is better than - say - BOD. Ok.
I'm not sure your logic is correct. I hope to god we can fluke a win against the ABs soon, this 'you never beat us' thing is getting quite annoying :)
Regarding Jane vs Bowe or Kearney, I genuinely have not seen enough of Jane to make an intelligent comparison, so I'm not going to. I guess you must have seen a lot of Bowe and Kearney?
Anonymous March 19, 2010 12:24 am

The differenc ebetween them and Jane, is that Jane has the same physical attricutes, but better skills.
His passing, kicking, catching and stepping are all of a higher standard. He reads the game better too.
He is an All Black. All BLacks are always great players.
NZ rugby is the best in the world, pretty much always has been.

I have not seen enough of jane, and i havent heard much about him..which to me shows he cant be all that fantastic (i mean that relatively...no doubt he is good) its just other AB players always seem to stick out....
