Schalk Burger loses his cool and slaps Meyer Bosman
Burger played one of his best matches of the season, popping up in support all over the show and putting his body on the line in typical fashion. Totally pumped up throughout, hes never at less than 100% and sometimes loses the plot a little.
This was the case as the Stormers started a great counterattack from their own tryline, only to have it come to an end with a knock-on. As Meyer Bosman put the hit in on Burger as the whistle went, the big flanker took exception and lashed out with a slap.
He apologised immediately to both Bosman and referee Chris Pollock, and was let off without further punishment. You can hear him saying "Sorry about that, I was just irritated" to the ref.
Burger said after the match "It was a typical derby, you know. The Cheetahs are a very proud unit so it was a tough match." There has since been no talk of a citing.
Just a few weeks ago, Burger lashed out at referee Mark Lawrence while scuffling with Jimmy Cowan of the Highlanders. And in fact last season, Burger gave Griquas player Bees Roux a similar type of flatty . Despite all his worth as a player, he still manages to do silly things at times.
The Stormers are now only one point behind the Bulls on the log after this physical battle. They have a bye ahead of their four match tour to Australasia.
"It always helps having a week off, the guys can relax and recuperate a bit. Hopefully we can nurse the injuries and hopefully we can take those players on tour," said Burger.
Do you think that a stand should have been taken against Burger by sending him off, or did the referee handle things well considering the circumstances? Well have the best tries from this match and the weekend in our weekly Pick of the Week compilation soon.

I would have thought after gouging during the summer he would have learned not to stick his hand in someones face again.
Think again
Thomas March 25, 2010 10:32 am

What a waste of talent that man is.
Matt March 25, 2010 10:32 am

I thought it was well handled actually, but would understand if there was a week or so suspension.. a slap on the wrists if you like.
Edbok March 25, 2010 10:44 am

That said, Schalk could not have complained had the punishment been harsher, raising your hands like that and you always run the risk.
The guy will only ever play on the edge, however, and this season he has found some great form - hopefully some more sensible management from Rassie Erasmus and he'll cut out these moments of stupidity.

the only thing i can say is: i begin to like schalk burger more and more. i hope his body makes another few seasons. you simply have to love those agressive, vicous und determined forwards going mad for 80mins...
and he has the skill set and knows when to throw a pass.

I don't see them flashing their fannies wearing ballet tutus, nor do I see them kicking a round ball.
It's good solid RUGBY that all our sons should be playing.

card? for what? this is a man's game... cards and bans should be for serious stuff like eye gouging...
border March 25, 2010 1:15 pm

Seriously though, that's not a big deal, eh?
I've never really been a "fan" of Burger, but he's a hard player and you've got to give him some credit at least for apologizing and realizing he'd done something retarded after doing it - not just looking to duck out and hide to "get some treatment from the medical staff" while the refs talk it over, as you'll often see players do.

The incident was in fact referred by the citing officer, but the commitee agreed that Burger had made incidental contact with Mark Lawrence - he was scuffling with Jimmy Cowan (who wouldn't), Lawrence came to break them up, and Schalk mistakenly struck him on the arm.
He wasn't lashing out at anyone, and he certainly wasn't aiming anything at the ref.

burger up to his old tricks again!!!
Winston March 25, 2010 3:20 pm

I think Schalk's body acts faster than his brain does, you could see him take a 10 sec breather to try and get in control of himself again. Jekyll vs Hyde in the same jersey.

There's a difference between this:

And a gay slap. Sorry.

I'm not a fan of Schalk Burger, though he is a great player. It's just a little slap, no harm intended, no harm done. Get over it...

I want to bang penel March 25, 2010 10:12 pm

Really? Playing for the Springboks is considered a waste of talent? What planet are you living on?
------
I think Burger should catch more heat from his teammates and friends for such a girly slap than from any sort of higher-ups.
I also think Burger is a hell of a player, but I the phrase "Schalk Burger loses his cool and..." sounds so right it could be made into a board game...or at least a drinking game. His id reactions are right up there with Nathan Hines or Bernard Jackman...or possibly the entire French Pro D2 league.
As for his push on Lawrence...come on, he was clearly just defending himself from the referee's threatening demeanor. I mean, Mark Lawrence is a force to be reckoned with. Burger was just distancing himself from the danger as quickly as possible. No, seriously though, he's gonna get in trouble one of these days for that kind of stupid shit. You can't touch a referee like that...

... pass me the bucket!
No.7 March 26, 2010 4:06 pm

ok, forget the gouge, it was bad and yes 99.99% of people agree he should have had more, but what do you expect?!?! he's hardly going to turn round and say 'ah, the ban you just gave me is quite short, how about upping it so everyone is happy'
.....so forget it....as for this incident...seems like it barely rates....its good to have it posted, its just another convo topic, but its not like Rory Kockott slap on Adam Thomson, which is what i expected....
id go with 'gay slap' and right decision.... :-/

Probably a nightmare to play against.

:) March 28, 2010 12:34 am

and as for the 'id do it' comment...why?!?!? im not exactly sure, but i dont think i saw any tears in Bosmans eyes, or any fear on his face after receiving such a hefty 'slap'....by all accounts i see this video and wonder why it even came up...i mean, bosman didnt die, burger didnt get sent off, and its hardly outrageous..... just sort of odd if anything....
(not that im complaining RD, i love the vids, and even this video, its just hard to put this in a category.....big hit, no...midweek madness, well not so much mad...friday funny, well not so funny....etc see what i mean?!)
glad its up though!!! :)
